Dolphins RB Kanyan Drake has three rushes of 40 yards or longer, tied for the most in the NFL this season.
That's more impressive when you consider his smaller amount of carries, due to not being the starter until recently. If he can fix his ball security issues, we may just have our guy.
I like Drake a lot, and am really glad that he's getting his shot. This week was the first time since HS he's been allowed to carry the ball 20+ times in a game! I don't want to go into 2018 with blind faith in him, but Id like to have him and a rookie split the load in some fashion.
Ball control aside I love the way he runs, he’s shifty, tough, a threat catching the ball and fast. Ajayi has only one of those attributes.
And this season Drake is doing a much better job of taking 3 yards when there is only 3 yards. During this season Ajayi was turning 3 yard runs into 0 yard runs by trying to break it outside.
To me, this is the most important trait that a RB can have, especially on a team that's built to move the ball through the air. Get the yardage thats available, and once in a while you'll be able to break the big one. Stop putting the team into second and 10 when it could have been 6 or 7 yards to go instead. Especially when you carry the ball on second down after an incomplete pass.
I liked the pick of Drake when he came out. Fumbles worry me a bit now, but none against the Broncos is good and he looked stronger as game went along
With what Gase said about liking to use multiple guys then I’d say there’s a good chance we move forwards next season with Drake, Williams and possibly another back. Or at least a one-two punch. Unless of course Gase is trying to throw everyone off the scent at the possibility of us drafting one of the stud backs in 2018? With that said, if Drake continues like this while Williams is out he might go forwards toy a featured back.
Williams is a UFA after this season. Unless no one else wants him, which I doubt, he may have played his last game in a Dolphin uniform, given his injury and our record.
He has three fumbles on 145 career touches. Thats not so high that its worrisome. I haven't noticed him being careless either. The last one came when he was looking in the other direction to work his way through traffic and the ball was knocked out from behind by a player's helmet.
he had another one that thankfully the whistle blew or it would have been a fumble. And that stat is for touches, most of his touches before this last few games were receptions which typically do not generate fumbles.
his experience is one thing that we all look forward to after a bad season. I don't think he is an every down back, and if paired with someone, can really help us be the versatile backfield Gase wants
