Well, they're meaningless until a team drops 40+ points on you...then they mean something. I agree with you in theory though, yards allowed do not have anything to do with wins and losses.

Meaningless may be too strong of a word.

But when a person is trying to figure out who has the best defense, yards allowed should be the last thing they look at.

OMG, joking right...we are dead last in the league
I agree, tell me how that's working for us this year on Prime Time. Why is it we get blown out? I have my feelings on it, just wondering how you see it.

We are not dead last in yards gained.

You can use correlations and something called "variance explained" to estimate the relative value of different stats.

The correlation between points allowed and win% runs generally around -0.75 (negative sign means the more you allow the less likely you win), while the correlation between yards allowed and win% is more like -0.2 with rushing yards being around -0.25 and passing yards being around -0.15 (makes sense because you rush more when you're leading).

Now.. IF the relationship between two variables (e.g. points allowed and win%) is well described by a straight line (and there are statistical tests for that), then the "variance explained" = the proportion of the variation in one stat predicted by the variation in the other stat, is simply the square of the correlation.

The square of -0.75 is 0.5625, and the square of -0.2 is 0.04. In other words, 56.25% of the variation in win% is explained by points allowed, but only 4% of the variation in win% is explained by yards allowed. So while neither stat is completely "meaningless" (every stat carries SOME information), points allowed is approximately 14 times more useful in predicting win% than yards allowed.

I mean.. I'm not thrilled about it, obviously.

But we weren't discussing our primetime games.. sooo?

Every problem we have is because this team cant get the Oline figured out. Get an Oline and running backs look better. Get an Oline and the QB has time to find his wipeouts, get an Oline and the Defense gets to sit more often instead of spending 2:00 mins on the sideline because we 3 and out quickly. Get an Oline and the Defensive faults get hidden more because they only go on the field half as much as they do now since we cant sustain any drives.

The entire team benefits from having a better oline and for whatever reason they cant get it right.

The Only person I would keep on that line is Tunsil everyone else should be replaced in my opinion or dropped to 2nd / 3rd on depth charts.

We need to draft and pay for some free agent young Oline help. Mean road grinders. We need to get rid of Suh and Wake as well too much money and lack of production. Suh is good still but will want to much. Better off using that money to bring in 3-4 other free agents who cant get to the QB either.
