This is a really good article that interviews dozens of players and coaches about who Jay Cutler is and how good he can be. This has me officially excited since it sounds like we found a true diamond in the rough that Adam Gase can make shine. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2734086-jay-cutler-teammates-interviews-miami-dolphins On Cutler's blank look on his face- On his career at Vanderbilt- On the velocity of his passes- On achieving greatness- On his accuracy/talent- On Cutler moving forward- That's just a small sample of the article- you guys really need to read the whole thing since it describes exactly who Cutler is as a person, quarterback and teammate.
A 12 year vet, who's never lived up to the billing nor his potential, is a "diamond in the rough"? C'mon now... not trying to be a downer, but he's had plenty of fluff pieces written about him over years in Denver and Chicago before the wheels came off with those teams. Let's wait and see how he handles a bad game. Most of the negative stuff with him is how he carries himself and acts after some adversity. Personally though, I love all the memes he's comedy gold for... Spoiler
For instance, some of his teammates have said that they want to whip people's butts when they call him Smokin Jay. They said he gave 100% effort, 100% of the time and the meme stuff is total BS.
Jay Cutler has a better chance of getting us to the Super Bowl (just getting there would be enough for me at this point) than Ryan Tannehill would ever be. He just processes the game much faster. Jay Cutler is playing smart and actually acts like he REALLY CARES, finally. We have a 2-3 year window with Jay Cutler as our QB. Goodbye Ryan Tannehill. Please draft a QB early next draft Miami Dolphins, or trade for a good young QB with lots of upside (2nd rounder for a Brett Favre type QB sounds great to me).
He has lived up to his potential at times, but never with the level of offensive weapons he has in Miami. With the Bears, it was a great defense and a ****ty offense trying their best to reach the endzone once or twice per game. It's the exact opposite in Miami with multiple home run threats and a solid run game as well. If Cutler can continue to play "game manager" and limit his gunslinging to 3-5 attempts per game, I don't see a team out there that can put up points like we can.
Then you're acknowledging that he's been as inconsistent as our QB of the past 5 seasons. Completely agree on Gase needing to protect Jay the "game manager" from "J-Cutty, the gunslinger." IMO, what we saw with Gase and Tannehill after the Titans game debacle last season, and what we saw in the 2nd half of the Chargers game last week, is what we can expect. Tons of screens, roll outs, bootlegs, and picking deep shots half a dozen times a game. Helps the OL and helps Jay. Also, most of what Gase did with Jay back in Chicago. He looked rusty against the Chargers and his placement was a little off. Hopefully, he finds his groove. This week would be nice.
he looked good in his first game, the gameplan was obviously called conservatively in the first half..I think Gase's plan is to start slow with minimal playbook chapters, allow Cutler to feel the game, not pressure him into making big plays, lull the defense, pound the rock, and set up the play action pass as we move forward for our big plays..playbook opened up as we go.. as long a the coach has the personality he respects I think you will get cutlers a game.
Definitely- he's been inconsistent his entire career. At the same time though, I think he has more potential than any "could have been" QB in the entire league, and we already know he has a great relationship with Gase that goes back several years. Gase has made it known that he wanted Cutler as his QB in Denver, Chicago and Miami- so it's almost like all the stars have aligned for this one season. He did look a little rusty in LA but at the same time, he moved great in that pocket and threw a couple of passes that very few QB's would have even seen. I think it's going to be a magical year with him under center and he's going to keep getting better with reps.
I'm right there with you in rooting for him to be successful, but I'm not going to give him a pass on his time in Denver and Chicago. He did that to himself. That said, he has a fresh slate and can completely re-invent himself here. He just needs to stick to the script, and not do the stupid stuff that made him a laughing stock and punch line. He has the talent. Hopefully, he's matured.
As long as Gase can keep getting production from the position, it won't matter. He won 10 of the last 12 regular season games with now 3 different QBs. And whether Jay stays or retires, and Tannehill stays or gets traded, we still need to draft a QB to groom.
No argument there, I just think people are forgetting that Tannehill was actually pretty good down the stretch last year. I didn't see anything in the Chargers game that Tannehill hasn't done or isn't capable of doing.
Agreed... Tannehill actually had a better ball game against the Chargers last year than Jay had last week. He was quietly having a very good season last year pre-injury and post-Thomas/Turner cuttings, and should have had very good season this year. A shame he was struck down. Anyway, we're riding with Jay and Jay this season. Let's roll.
He's a gunslinger but so was Marino. Lets all remember that Dan thru plenty of picks as well. That doesn't really bother me too much TBH. He's going to throw picks that will leave you scratching your head. It's going to happen. He's going to make other throws that are going to knock our collective socks off. It's who he is. I don't care about his perceived poor body language or any of that stuff and don't tell me he doesn't care. I cant believe anyone can reach that level and not care. The thing is that he is not scared to try and make those throws. He is not timid so the price we will have to pay for that is picks. For points on the board, I think it's a worthwhile trade.
yeah but marino never really had a run game like this one. Marino was forced because defenses knew we had to pass. We can now pick our spots
he sure didn't look like a gunslinger mistake prone qb to me...looked very controlled and conscious of not making mistakes..no ints..no fumbles...2 sacks..a couple throw aways.. that Parker lob drop on the roll was pure talent.
Cutler does a few things Tannehill can't but they're subtle, aged veteran things. The way he slides/steps in the pocket, looks off receivers, his anticipation, his confidence, his poise.....lots of little stuff. I guess I'm trying to say he's more refined as a pocket QB. Did you see the one designed run play for Cutler though (which was likely a blown play)? LOL, that was ugly...Tannehill has him by a country mile in the feet department.
In the article up top there was a conversation with him and Gase a few years ago. It was a windy practice and Adam said that they'd have to change up the offense since Cutler couldn't go deep, but Cutler just smiled (in his non-smile way) and said it wasn't going to be a problem. Then he started launching footballs. A few of his teammates say he easily has the strongest arm in football....the ball actually hisses in the air when he fires.
It was a straight zone read. And it was an epic fail. LOL. Again, I think you are underestimating Tannehill’s growth as well. He did all those things last year.
will Gase even put him in a position to have one? they would have to completely shut the run game down. you noticed that no pass was close to being picked, and I am including the 50/50 balls thrown to Parker. His only bad pass was the hail mary.
Cutler is better in the pocket and has a slightly stronger arm, but Tannehill is more accurate and much more athletic. In the end, there isn't much of a gap in terms of pure talent and what they can produce. When it comes down to it, I still choose Tannehill because he's much younger and has more room to grow.
Jay first 3 years with the Bears he took a beating and did not have any receivers. Gase is the perfect coach for him because he gets Jay. Jay hated everyone of his OCs. He thought they were idiots. Jay never trashed any of his teammates.
Get used to the leash on him, that's going to be the case all year. Gase called games the same way in Chicago, with heavy emphasis on the run to help reduce opportunity for Cutler mistakes.
You may be right, but I wouldn't count on it. That Bears offense was depleted and Cutler has never had these types of weapons before while under Gase.
Fox likes his games run like that. It was used to hold scoring down. It will open up once jay and receivers play together more.
I disagree. How many times have you seen elite WR's grab the ball from the defender and make a great catch? Happens all the time. It was underthrown slightly, but it was a designed play where we expect our WR with elite skills DeVante Parker go up and make the catch (those are the plays we drafted Parker to make), and that's exactly what he did.
Does this mean you blame DeVante if he fails? Because it sure wouldn’t have been an incomplete pass...
If he didn't at least punch or knock the ball out of the defender's hands, then yes I would blame DeVante. He was right freakin' there bro.
