The was the correct call, no? 10 seconds left, Chargers had more than enough time to spike with a second left. I guess there was a chance they rush it and do a false start, but it would have at least given us the ball back for one final Hail Mary/lateral. I only seen the play once. I was upset when they first called it, but what do you all think? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
I heard it was because we had the wrong unit on the field. I don't know, I believe coaching was pretty bad yesterday overall
It was 3rd down and 2, and they had no timeouts left. If they would have failed to convert the 3rd down, with no timeouts left, they couldn't have clocked it, as it would have been a turnover on downs. Gase called the timeout in case the kicker made it, he wanted time for a kickoff return. This is how I remember it in my head, but I could be misremembering the down, distance, and time left on the clock. Maybe someone can correct me. I didn't record the game, only watched it on the Ticket.
It was a bad time out at the time because some members of the kicking unit were running on the field, Rivers was yelling at them to get off, and there was confusion among the Chargers as to whether to spike the ball or kick it without spiking it. So there's no guarantee the Chargers would have actually spiked it with 10 seconds left. However.. in retrospect it was a good time out because there's no guarantee Koo misses the kick if they do spike it haha! We KNOW in retrospect we won so I'll take that.
Hard to criticize this with hindsight. What coach would have planned that the Charger kicking unit would be idiots? At the end of the road Bills game last year the Dolphins were able to get the kicking unit on the field and kick the game-typing FG with the clock running. Gase probably thought that's what they were trying to do, when logic states they had the time and the extra down to spike it, so they didn't have the kick block unit out there. Can't always prepare for stupidity. Would have been easier for my nerves had they not called the Timeout though.
It was a bad timeout. The Chargers didn't try to spike the football....they were running their offense off the field and sending in the kicking unit. I guess LA figured in case they bobbled the snap or whatever they wanted to preserve 4th down, but there's a chance that they wouldn't have had enough time to get set and let the kicker do his thing. At the same time though, that timeout clearly "iced the kicker" when he was thinking that he'd have to rush out there and perform under intense pressure. So even though it was a bad timeout, it likely won us the game.
It was 3rd down, so they would have spiked and kick the field goal. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
One rationale i heard is that the confusion from the dolphins as to what unit the chargers were bringing in might have led to 12 men on the field because the dolphins didnt know which group to bring in which in turn would have led to a penalty and a shorter field goal for the chargers. I think it was just a little bit of a chaotic scene and Gase kind of panicked.
One of the all time great coaching blunders. I have never seen a coaching decision reduce his team's winning % by 80. I love Gase as a coach, but I don't think I will ever see a worse move by a coach in sporting history again. The game was over, look at the video and count manually from when the clock stops. Rivers is 15 yards from the center yelling at the kicker and holder to get off the field when he realizes a timeout was called 5 seconds prior. There would have been 5 seconds left in the game at the point he realized there was a timeout. He would have had to get under center with 3 seconds left, pause for a second to avoid an illegal motion penalty (which would end the game), and then snap and spike the football which takes a second. That gives two seconds for Rivers to start running back to the center and actually move the 15 yards to get there. I don't think that would have been done. I couldn't even enjoy the missed kick, I was in a state of shock at the Chargers dysfunction originally and then the worst timeout I've ever seen called bailing them out of it. My jaw was dropped and I couldn't muster words.
