For those thinking of somehow cutting Tannehill and moving on, here are the 2018 QB's who will be available one way or another. Choose someone from this list that who you would use to replace Tannehill. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/2018/all/quarterback/
For me, the most intriguing option there is to try to obtain Kellen Moore in order to bring in real QB competition. Incredible college stats but undrafted due to his lack of height. He could be a low cost-high reward pick up, regardless of what happens to Tannehill. The rest? Mostly meh.
I was the exact same way with Chad Henne- he was a top 5 QB in the preseason and looked great in his first season game. Then he got hurt a few weeks in and we all thought, no big deal...maybe he will be back for the playoffs or next year. Philbin got the axe though, a new coach came in and it was game over- Henne was flat-out cut. If you are a big RT fan, then the best possible scenario this year is for Moore to play well enough to hold the starting role. Because as soon as we sign someone from the outside that passes Moore on the depth chart, I think Tannehill is instantly expendable. The reason I say that is because if we bring in Kaep or RG3, they're not looking for 1-year backup contracts like Moore has been content with. If Moore is the guy though, then I don't think he has a problem shining for a season then sliding back into his reserve role (for reasons I shared above- his wife, the concussions, etc.). That also makes the decisions easy for Gase to stick to the current game-plan while his franchise QB rehabs. The less complicated this becomes, the better it is for RT's future in Miami.
First off- it would be a QB competition between Moore and Moore? I love it already! Edit- he is on the Cowboys roster though.
" "When I get there, I will be able to tell you, but I don't think it's close to anything," Gase said. "Like I said, I've had one conversation with [Cutler]. That's where we're at. "I'm dealing with this [team] right now. When I know more, hopefully within the next few days, I will have a better idea of what's going on." "He's interested," Gase said of Cutler. "But we're just trying to figure out everything. You don't expect this to happen. ... I know I need somebody either way. I'd like to know exactly with Ryan first. So that helps me make a decision with what direction to go." "We've had a lot of people call us. We've talked to a few people," Gase said. "We're keeping all options on the table. A lot of things that are out really isn't what's going on. It's funny to watch.""
I think Gase is looking for a capable back up for MM, I think Gase has a lot of confidence in MM and I think he'd be asking Cutler to take a back up/season safety valve role. If he can't get a vet, i.e. Cutler, who seems like the only viable candidate for that role, I think he goes for a Glennon type, a ? type on the younger side, a "with the right coaching" prospect, then drafting possible QB'S next year?
I think drafting a QB could be high up on their priority list now, whatever happens. As I said before, I think Kellen Moore is intriguing but that's only if the Cowboys don't extend him.
This year Cutler is fine if 10 million or under; if not Moore. In the future I hope we draft Josh Allen of Wyoming. A few of his throws reminds me of Marino. There is no doubt that Allen has a great skill for the NFL, and he should be a starting quarterback for a franchise in the next few years. Sources have compared Allen's skill set to Ben Roethlisberger, so it is clear that Allen has special and rare physical tools. http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2018jallen.php
Pretty much what some of us have been saying. The more important story here is not can Moore be good enough to start - the question is regarding his recent concussions and we can't go into the season with Dought/Fales as our backups. Not to mention they need a better arm out there during practices and in preaseason games to evaluate other players. Honestly, this could be the first time in a while that the Dolphins carry 3 QB's on the roster.
Ashamed Miami was not prepared for this better. Good organizations hedge against this. miami sat on their hands Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Prepared for what? Tannehill going down? That's what Moore is for. What would you have done? Draft a QB high just in case Tannehill goes down with an injury? Can't blame the organization here. And it's pretty good they got Cutler. Whoever we play, Moore or Cutler, one can't say the season is in the tank. I'm still on the "no excuses" bandwagon for the season.
Was it the same dr as culpepper? I have never heard of an acl healing on its own. Yes ,draft someone or trade or sign someone and protect your team. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don't remember you clamoring for doing that before Tannehill's injury. Correct me if I'm wrong. Besides.. there is a reason you have medical professionals to help coaches/GMs make such decisions.
Sure you can. Its a philosophical choice when you decide to give your unproven QB another weapon rather than draft another QB. Our organization has taken this to the nth extreme and I think its stupid. I would have turfed Moore, drafted at least one QB and signed Foles.
Well as I said I didn't see anyone advocating that pre-injury, which goes to show you how different cost-benefit analyses look like before vs. after the fact. Besides, making the playoffs should change the calculus on how urgent it is to replace a starting QB with a high draft pick. Either way, 2017 wasn't that great a QB draft so who would you have taken, and at what cost? Three QBs were taken in the 1st round. Bears draft Trubisky at #2 who we probably couldn't have taken even if we traded our entire draft. KC takes Mahomes at #10 after giving up 2017 and 2018 1st round picks. Then Texans take Watson after trading up using their 2017 and 2018 1st round picks. That's a LOT to give up for QB's that weren't rated as high as many in previous drafts at similar draft positions. So unless you want to give up 2017 and 2018 1st rounders, you'd probably have to take Kizer, who was taken by that model franchise known as the Cleveland Browns (speaking of blaming an organization!) in the 2nd round before we picked. Yeah.. personally I don't think it's fair to blame the Dolphins organization for keeping Moore as a backup while saying 2017 is a prove-it year for Tannehill.
Not true. I didn't even want Tannehill in 2012 or for him to get an extension. I've stated I wanted AJ McCarron or Connor Cook to back up Moore since then. We were about to be headed into his sixth season still unsure if he's worth keeping around for a seventh. We can cut him after this season and be off the hook for most of his contract. We'll most likely go 9-7 or 10-6 not having felt a difference with Cutler instead of Tannehill. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Wait a second.. we're not talking about replacing Tannehill. Sure some advocated that. But did you advocate KEEPING Tannehill but drafting a QB high in case he gets injured? I don't recall anyone suggesting that.
Not sure what Roy was advocating but essentially drafting and replacing are the same. I've seen some post they think we should draft a QB every year until we find someone special. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If Gase were smart he would have taken someone in 2016. At the very least replace Moore with someone like Foles. As far as the calculus changing for making the playoffs I'd still be making sure I had a young QB with upside even if I had a superbowl winning Wilson, if I were the decider Wilson, McCarron and Foles would all be on the roster right now. I agree with the Patriots/Bengals philosophy, and I hate Gases.
If that's what Moore is for, you don't scramble and look for a starter. dirtylandry is right on this one, Miami handled this terribly. It's one thing to have a guy at #2 that you don't want to ride a whole season with. It's another to have that same guy at #2, when your #1 just suffered a knee injury.
I'm not reading the signing of Cutler as us just handing him the starting QB position. If Gase actually said he's making Cutler the starter without a competition than I'll agree with you. But if Cutler and Moore are going to compete for the QB position, then Miami handled this beautifully. It means they had a QB in Moore they can live with even if Tannehill goes down (and the guy did pretty well last year providing evidence of that) and now they're bringing in someone else that could potentially prove to be better. I'm actually pleased at the way the organization handled this (so far).
..which I'd interpret as him saying there will be a competition. Gase's 1st sentence suggests that. The 2nd sentence is just telling us Cutler's state of mind. At least that's the way I'm interpreting it right now. We'll see soon enough. If both Moore and Cutler are allowed to compete I stand by my opinion this organization played the situation well. If they hand the job to Cutler without a competition, then I'll criticize how they handled it too.
Cutler wasn't my first choice but realize after more thought..... We really caught a break Damn at this time of the year to get a QB on the level we have is pretty damn lucky... Funny its really not far fetch to even think that we Potentially may have a better more credible QB than we've had in years. And compared to Tannehill could be a large improvement to what we've seen the last 4-5 years...during Tennehill training on the job Though we were all mostly still hoping that this would be the year that Tannehill developed the quality and consistency of that dependable NFL QB we all hoped he'd be. But truthfully was ....still to be seen....and refreshing going into the season with someone not needing more experience to prove himself. We could be actually better off now with the established and well experienced talent we now have and haven't had for a while..
I'd be blown away if there were even thoughts of Moore competing with Cutler for #1.... Moore is an excellent back up....... but don't fool yourself he is a career backup. Cutler IS the guy folks
If there is even a shred of truth to this I would want Gase's head on a platter .... http://247sports.com/Bolt/Schefter-Cleveland-received-trade-offer-for-Brock-Osweiler-105865993
Naw. You need to watch the PC. He all but confirmed it's Cutlers job once he's in shape. Reporter asked him if there is going to be a competition. He said he did not have to announce that now but that Cutler did not come out of retirement to sit on the sidelines There is no qb competition. Moore is the placeholder until Cutler is ready.
I agree. Moore should have been cut and Miami should have looked for a real back up that they actually have trust in. Makes their statement that they believed that Moore would be a quality starter for teams in the NFL, look like a lie now.
Had nothing to do with Matt's play. Already been reported that Gase's primary concern was with Moore's ability to stay healthy given that he had two concussions last season - entirely valid IMO. But please, carry on .......
