Is Jarvis Landry in the Dolphins' long-term plans?

I'd like to see him brought back. No doubt. Partly because I like what he brings, and because I feel like if he goes, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with the pats torching us for years like Welker did.

Landry will be back if he wants to be back. If he thinks that he can break the bank and that another team will pay him as if he's Julio Jones or AJ Green, instead of similar players Doug Baldwin or Keenan Allen, then he'll be gone. The situation couldn't be laid out more clearly as to what should happen with his contract extension. He should earn about 11.5 million a season, which is a huge amount of money, but not 15+ like he seems to be shooting for.

 

In my opinion Miami is waiting and seeing because they want an exponential year out of him (basically for free). It's a little selfish, because he will be more expensive next year. I think Miami is "done taking are of its own" for this year. I think Miami wants production now for cheap and then reset next year. We can franchise him if needed\

I would prefer they lock him up

 

We've also got some young players we need to evaluate. If Ford or Morgan develop into that slot role, then it becomes even murkier for Jarvis. For 12M a year, we could dip into FA and get two outstanding starting interior OL that would help the running game, thus making all of our WRs more productive. I love love love Jarvis...I am huge LSU fan and he was probably my favorite player along with Honey Badger--but I don't know if it makes financial sense. After this season, we'll see.

 

Actually Landry can't make any more money this season because of the rookie salary cap, if he signed an extension the benefits of that extension wouldn't come into play until the following season.

So just to be clear, the Dolphins aren't "not signing him" to save money this year, Landry's money for this year is locked, he can't receive any extra bonuses of any kind, so Miami not signing him is a "down the road" design.

 

That's actually not true. Players are (thankfully) prevented from signing an extension until they've played three years in the league, but Landry now has surpassed that and anything can be done with his contract.

For example, Derek Carr was drafted in the same round as Landry in 2014, Carr at pick #36 and Jarvis at #63. Carr just signed a new contract that both replaced the final year of his rookie deal with a new number and gave him a big signing bonus. His original cap number would have been 1.7m this season, and now its 15.7m.

So, a new deal for Landry could give him a much bigger contract in 2017. Not guaranteed that it would, but he would certainly get any signing bonus money right away. If we were to use the Doug Baldwin contract as a reference, Baldwin got a bump up to 6m in base salary in the first year of the new deal that took effect in 2016, and 24m in total bonus (some of which he gets right away, but the cap charge is spread over five years).

So, just to clear things up, yes, Landry is allowed by the league to sign a new deal with the Dolphins at any point. The ball is in his court. My guess is that Landry could see more guaranteed money than Baldwin or Keenan Allen did, but his total dollar figure should ionly get a smaller bump due to cap increases.

 

Let's not forget that if Landry really does think he should be paid like a top 5 receiver and the team doesn't, then the sides may be too far apart to get it done. Is that the team's fault or the player's? What if he honestly does think he is top 5 and should be paid like it?

What I am trying to make explicit is people on these boards are constantly saying that he should be happy at about Baldwin's level. What if Landry honestly and fervently doesn't agree? What if he thinks he is on Antonio Brown's level?

 

Carr is an exception, 3 years accrued and over 25 years of age(26), and Jarvis is 24, his money is maxed out for this year.

Per the CBA, drafted rookie contracts are all 4 years and the cap hit yearly increase cannot exceed 25% of the initial years hit for any subsequent year.

However, if you have 3 years accrued and are over 25 the rookie cap no longer applies, it's so the uncommon old guy rookies like Carr can get paid before their career is over, lol.

 

Then it would be wise to let him walk, unfortunately.

If he weren't such an emotional leader on this team I would say Nope, he's not in their long term future.

If Drew Morgan looks good and progresses through the year, maybe they look at him as a guy who can be a strong slot guy with some return skills, quick feet, sure hands, physical, and slower top speed... at far less cost than Jarvis.

But you question whether losing Jarvis costs you some of the team's heart.

 

btw, if Tannehill becomes more of a LEADER with his presence, emotion, vocal leadership, some intensity... then that can help let go of Jarvis. Seriously.

Offensive players look at Jarvis as their emotional leader. That has to be taken up a bit and shared by someone else this year if you are considering letting Jarvis leave.

Well coached teams have been letting go of team leaders for years. Patriots, Steelers, etc.

This team shouldn't worry about that.

 

The fact that he's such and emotional leader, a sparkplug, plays with such heart and makes things happen are the reasons that, IMO, he deserves a 11m + contract, along with his youth and durability. Without his personality and drive, there is no way that he's worth anywhere near that much.

However, there are limits to everything, and there is just nothing Landry can do to make himself worth being paid as much as the guys at the top of the list.

 

The real question though, is he adding to the win total? How much is his spark worth? The team won't fall apart without him, he's not a scorer, I wouldn't pay him over 10 mil, I love Landry, but I think that's his ceiling.

 

I would like to hope that Jarvis Landry stays. He's been a very solid WR.

 

I think that most of us want him to stay. Unlike a lot of players where there is a fan division on them, almost everyone likes him. The question becomes how much he gets paid.

 

When Landry has 6 or less receptions in a game
the Dolphins are 8-1

When Landry is targeted 10 or more times in a game
the Dolphins are 1-5 with the only win against the Browns

The rest of the season Landry averaged
6 targets per game and the Dolphins were 9-1

The team as a whole seems to do better the less
Landry is utilized...maybe our team is better spreading
the pigskin around to other weapons.

I think this is what Gase wants to achieve not sure how
it will work out for Landry with the possibility of fewer touches.

Not sure how the numbers stack up in previous seasons
since I haven't checked.

 

If he has another great year, I think a contract in the $10-11 million per year range is worth it to keep him. Worst case scenario, you trade him to the Giants for a second rounder in 2018 in a "tag and trade" situation.

 

Well, I think that the biggest thing to take from that is that when we get behind or are otherwise desperate to make something happen, Jarvis gets a lot of targets. When we are ahead, and/or the offense is clicking, the ball gets spread around better and we run the ball. Most of the time, he isn't ever going to be a guy who simply takes over a game and wins it by himself with a huge stat day. He's one of those guys who is at his best when the defense has to account for a few other players, and then he can slice them apart underneath and convert a lot of first downs.

 

I figure that you mention the Giants because of his buddy, Beckham. But thats specifically why he won't be going there. No way can they devote 25+ mil a season to two WRs, plus they have Shepherd on board as the #2 to Odell already, plus Brandon Marshall.

The larger point is correct though. If he won't sign a reasonable deal, you tag him, and see if anyone is interested in trading for him.

 

Agree. You know, I wonder, with Tannehill a confident veteran now, and having grown emotionally through this injury and it's challenges -- he may actually NEED Jarvis to leave in order to grow into that emotional space as the vocal leader.

Jarvis leading could really open it up for Tannehill to become the emotional leader.

 

I think they are waiting to see what DeVante Parker brings this year. If he breaks out I could see them moving on from Landry to save $$$. They have Parker locked up through 2019 if they want. So by the time they'd have to pay Parker if he broke out they could move on from Stills contract also or extend Stills.

I think they don't want to have too many cap $$'s wrapped up in the WR's.

A breakout from Parker means less reliance on Landry.

 

If the team doesn't think Landry is worth 12 mil, then it makes zero sense to tag him at 15 mil, because what if you cant trade him?

It's not a good path to do business with this player, the face of your franchise, all I'm saying, jmo..

Obviously I don't know the inner details, if the guy is being a jackass and not taking into account some flexibility when it comes to the contract so the team has some room to operate then I get it,I think every player who truly wants to win must think about the cap perspective relative to the overall team..I just don't think Landry is the type of guy to hold a team hostage or not take into account what I'm saying.

When our offense is balanced running versus passes, we win more times than not. Don't have the time to actually look up the exact figures but I've made this argument before...when all we do is pass, pass, pass, we lose most of those games

 

That's the thing. If we aren't behind and we're throwing it to Landry we're still dunking and dinking. We really need Parker and Stills to step up

 

While I understand what you are saying, dunking and dinking still moves the ball downfield. I'll tell you this though, the success of our passing game doesn't depend on Tannehill, it doesn't depend on Landry, nor Parker nor Stills.

I disagree, he's fun to watch, but he is not a high impact player, you need to get in the EZ more than 4 times a year to deserve that money imo.

 

I would bet his value is 12 million, regardless of Td's..if he hits the market he will get it...or we will give him at least that..problem is he may think he's a 15 million dollar guy

 

As we well know, what a player can get on the market is not always = to his actual value, see Mike Wallace, and imo we will see it again with Kenny Stills, and the smart teams let some other team overpay for their services.

Imo, his fire isn't worth all the extra dollars, production, as in TD's has to be there for 12 mil, just imo anyway.

 

I think the Stills contract is a good one.

Deep threat speed WR's like KS are notorious for inconsistent production, the 40 catches and 9 TDs is not at all likely to happen again this year, that was an anomaly and is not sustainable.

 

I think that, as last year progressed, Stills and RT had developed a really good feel for one another in the overall passing game. It wasn't just the deep balls. They were seeing the same things in the defense, and were able to coordinate to make plays happen in the intermedite game as well, and that's huge. To me, there's a lot of potential there to be tapped.
