Since slotting this seems to be a no brainer every year. Except the year Aponte did the offset language thing.

 

It's largely just a case of where the guarantees are placed - roster bonuses, workout bonuses etc. and whether the money is more up front than back loaded etc.

Just because the overall number is slotted doesn't mean the way the contract is structured to meet the slotted amount is always the same.

Isn't this kind of a non issue these days with the now normal rookie contracts?

 

According to the article the hold-outs for rookies now are due largely to the offset language in the contract.
