So I was watching the ESPN mock draft last night and one of the critics was Bill Polian, who I think all here believe has good pedigree. His work in Buffalo and Indy were pretty impressive. He said a few things that I took to heart last night, I believe around the Denver pick, who selected Lamp and Giants or someone around us took Ramcyzk. FYI, James walker selected McDowell. Anyway, not only did Polian slam that Phins pick, he said that Guards overall should not be taken in round 1 and that the tackles in this draft (and overall offensive linemen) were not 1st round worthy. I'm not here to talk about McDowell. Couldn't care less about him. However, as Phins fans, we know we need guards. We know we need depth. However, is it appropriate to wait longer for them?

I would appreciate any stats on the last 5 seasons on high grade guards playing now and where they were drafted. On a side note, should we be concerned with the level of competition Lamp played if considered in round 1? They played Alabama, which is a pro team. Does anyone know how he did?

Lamp was great against Alabama playing at LT. He didn't give up any sacks in that game and did very well overall.

I agree that normally guard is not a first round position. But if anybody is worth it in this draft it's lamp especially given that he can also play tackle and center.

Lamp made Alabama's DL look pedestrian.

Firstly, Polian is overrated and the game has passed him by.

Secondly, Lamp is an excellent guard and showed very well against really good players.

Lastly, we, as a group, tend to not understand how the level of guard play effects the line as a whole. Everyone thinks guard is like every other position, where the various players can all be graded on a typical graph where the level of play can be charted at a 45-degree angle, like this:

And if you look at individual guards, it does work like that. BUT, if you look at how guard play effects the overall play of the line, the graph looks more like this:

The difference between GREAT & OK guards as it pertains to the overall line play are nominal, but the difference between OK & AWFUL is a cliff. Last year backs that up. Once we got rid of AWFUL players (Thomas, Turner) our overall line improved to the point that Thill had his best showing and Ajayi set the league on fire.

IMO, Lamp is great, but we don't need great, we just need good. We need great on defense.

If you read on Lamp they all point to that game as proof. If I am not mistaken he did not give up a sack all year. He also played well year before against LSU.

He sure talks a lot of crap, that's for sure. He was lucky Manning fell in his lap, first of all. His team went 2-14 without the guy. Sure, he drafted Robert Mathis too but name another top caliber player he drafted. John Elway helped Manning win a ring a lot sooner than Bill Polian did.

He's also the same guy that claims T.O. and Randy Moss don't belong in the HOF. Also claims the Colts had a first round grade on Brady. Just a couple of days ago he said “No one that I can think of who tested positive or came up with a positive test at the combine has ever really succeeded. Just keep that in mind when you make the decision.”

I don't understand what you're saying. Do you want me to compare him to GMs we've had?

I'm not following your logic. I can't assess Polian because the Dolphins haven't had a GM as good as him (I don't agree with that)? How does that make any sense? This just proves people will jump on me even though other posters called him overrated.

what was the point of this conversation? That Polian is insane to take guards in round 1, right?

You claimed he has a good pedigree. I'm saying he doesn't and talks a lot of crap. If he didn't have Manning fall in his lap, I don't think he would've built a winning team at all.
