Very cool, especially as we can trade them now, right? We could combine the third and a fifth to move in the third for example to get a guy that is slipping to the middle of the round. Or just use all of them on defense, which is probably a better idea.....
Nice to see it "official" now. Interesting to see what we do with them. Nice to finally be on the receiving end of compensatory picks for once even if it does mean losing a good player. Good to see the moves that were likely done with the thought in mind of getting these picks pay off for us especially since they're tradable this year.
I wonder how much these played in the decision to trade away those picks for Caroo last year? They had to know we'd be getting serious comp picks after the Vernon (!) and Miller contracts. I thought it was going to be a third and fifth, so the extra fifth is nice.
This is the first time I considered that. Well, they need him to step up this year anyway Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I thought it was reported that they made the trade with the hope that they would get an extra 3rd and a 4th.
Yah I'm curious if Crack Pipe couldn't screw over Minny by trading for the last pick in the 4th comps and giving that to Minny for the Caroo trade. Or whether it states it has to be an original comp pick given to them. Honestly I'd keep those 5th's. The team has been doing solid with those 5th rounder lately.
I read the trade was done on the expectation of the comp picks. Disregarding last yeats's 6th which realistically is very unlikely to provide a contributor, I still have doubts about the trade. If we had 2 thirds a fourth and 3 fifth round picks I'd feel a lot happier about our prospects of fixing the holes at G, LB and DE in this draft. And that's not taking into account Carroo's lack of on field production last year. I get that Carroo is a good prospect, but whoever we drafted needed to be a contributor last year for that trade to make sense. Now in hindsight it seems a luxury pick by a team that needed more necessities.
My Weekly Dead Horse Rant... We can't extend Jarvis, keep Stills, pay Parker, and expect Carroo or Scott to offer anything. Carroo can be a player...His game is much like that of Rashard Matthews. I think Scott could be solid, too. What if we could trade Parker for a second and a third? We'd have a first, two seconds, two thirds, three fifths, a six and a seventh. Carroo or Rashawn Scott would have a great opportunity to step up and compete for that third WR position (fifth passing option). We could address many needs with those picks. I am thinking would we could look something like this: 1. Forrest Lamp, G, WKU 2. Jarrad Davis, LB, UF 2. DeMarcus Walker, DE, FSU 3. Nazair Jones, DT, UNC 3. Jordan Willis, DE, KSU 5. Duke Riley, LB, LSU 5. Dorian Johnson, G, Pitt 5. Isaac Asiata, C, Utah 6. Chad Kelly, QB, Ole Miss 7. Brandon Facyson, CB, VaTech A starter at OG and LB...some rotation guys at DE and DL. Riley has some skill at LB, probably at Will. Get some depth at OG, and someone to compete at RG. Not sure if Kelly will be there in week 6....he's got skills, but he's a knucklehead. Maybe if he is there, working with Gase will help get him straight. My FA signings would be: Zach Brown, LB, Buffalo Larry Warford, OG, Detroit Kenny Stills Andre Branch.... Lets roll into week one!
i think becuase we let certain guys walk, we get something for it. like vernon, who signed the biggest deal, we develop him and he just walks for more money, we get something. if we signed a high $ free agent, that would have off set i beleive.
They come from losing FAs and not replacing those FAs with equal FAs, it's based on salary, which is why we got the highest comp pick because of OV. All comp picks are taken after all 32 normal picks are taken in a round, e.g. we get pick 33 of round 3, 97th overall, they are in reality next round picks, if there were no 3rd round comp picks this year the 97th pick would have been the first 4th round pick. Our 5th round comp picks aren't very good this year because of all the 3rd and 4th round comp picks, there are 19 comp picks before our first 5th round pick and 25 picks before our 2nd 5th round pick, which basically makes them mid-late 6th round picks. Usually there are not so many 3rd and 4th round comp picks.
Incorrect. Mario Williams did not factor into our compensatory picks. Branch and Quddus did, however. He was released by his former team, and thus not considered an asset to his former or new team.
That's awesome! Just goes to show how important drafting is. Even if you can't keep guys on your team, when they go for big days elsewhere you get picks to make up for it. I know there have been several write ups on how Ozzie Newsome has done this to build a consistent winner and multiple time Super Bowl champion. The key is getting this mid round picks to produce.
I hope we address our kicking situation with one of the 5ths.. might be a steep price but kicking has never been more important with the distance of extra points.. and we cant rely on our current kicker beyond 45...
Well, we wasted a 5th on Sturgis, spending a 5th on a player doesn't make him any better, the kicking game hasn't changed, so no need to change drafting strategy. The extra point being at 30 yds doesn't really change the kicking game, 30 yds has been a chip shot for a long time. Franks, who I agree should be replaced, was 41 of 42 on EPs last year, the high %s of the old days will never be reached again obviously, but the NFL did that on purpose to add a bit of excitement. Nothing has really changed though, you still get quality Ks as UDFAs.
