The online service also seems like they're doing it wrong. They are going with the pay model like PSN and XBL. That's fine. But then they want to give "free" titles like the other guys. BUT....

    "Monthly game download

Subscribers will get to download and play a Nintendo Entertainment Systemâ„¢ (NES) or Super Nintendo Entertainment Systemâ„¢ (Super NES) game (with newly-added online play) for free for a month."

You're kind of getting a game you can't pick to play for a month then you lose it. That's a bummer. Especially when the other dudes are adding crap to your library for ever. Granted, the Games with Gold and PSN plus games have not been the best lately, at least you can play them whenever.

I don't understand their wording. The game is only free for a month and you can't just download it and play whenever? WTF?

No, you can only access it for a month. So if March's game is Super Metroid, come April you cannot play that game anymore unless you buy it.

So... they have a rotating free monthly game. What's the bad part? This doesn't preclude giving other games for free, or other promotions.

i mean if they said they'd give free games thats one thing. They just want you to play one for a month.

That's one thing they'll be doing, yes. What I don't understand is why you seem to think it's going to preclude other promotions, like the free game giveaways you want.

Not necessarily. They barely touched online, because they were busy promoting the games lineup. They had to prioritize. They've already scheduled a new Nintendo Direct next week for the Fire Emblem Warriors game.

There are a ton of details they left out. Give it a couple weeks. They'll keep the hype train rolling with phased reveals of more information.

Got me a Switch payed off as well from Gamestop here in PA. Kinda MEH on launch titles currently announced though I am sure a few more will hit prior to launch but I traded in my Wii U for it so I kinda have to get it :) Grabbed Zelda bundle with an extra set of controllers (DAMN they are expensive!)

So along with my other consoles I will be Twitch streaming Switch stuff it looks like :)

Yeah the accessories are crazy expensive. $70 for a pro controller seems excessive. That wheel seems pretty cheap, though.

    Some follow up game announcements:

    Disgaea 5 Complete
    Syberia 3
Farming Simulator (yes, this matters, look at Steam numbers)
    Dragon Quest Heroes I&II
    Rime
    Stardew Valley
    Steep

Not bad. If the Switch serves as a sort of bridge between Steam's mid-tier games and the console world, it'll be a big hit.

LOL, I totally believe you on Farming Simulator. I worked at Office Depot for 14 years, from 2000, when we had a HUGE PC gaming section with hundreds of titles, though the end of 2013, when we had maybe 20, and Farming Simulator was always there from the point that it was released, and it always sold.

The hardware is nice. Here's some early observations:

    - The tablet part is much thicker than I expected. I didn't measure but it seems like damn near half-inch thick. I'm sure a less lazy person can find real dimensions. This isn't a bad thing. All of the comparisons to a tablet put it in my head that it'd be like an ipad mini with controllers. The tablet with the JoyCon connected feels really nice and like a well built product. Nothing like the Wii U gamepad at all ;)

    - I feel like the device as a whole is smaller in the hand than I expected. Also not a bad thing. I could easily put one (without JoyCon) in my pocket or back pocket.

    - The vent holes on the device are much larger than I expected. This is not an issue for most sane families. But for a dude that has a toddler... I can already see myself tweezering Cheerios out of there.

    - The device seems very very durable... I know because Bobby (dude to my right) dropped it. VERY hard. It was fine. The girl running the booth justy laughed and said it'll be fine and that it's happened at least 20 times this weekend.

    - The screen looks really nice. I have a smartphone with a great screen that's 1080p. I have an iPad with a great screen. I use a PC with a higher-end GPU and love nice resolutions. One of the things that worried me was that a 720p screen would not look good to me. Happy to report I was wrong and it looked great. Colors popped. Motions was smooth and crisp. Zero complaints so far.

    - The process of going from TV to mobile mode is super simple. The game pauses and asks you to press a button to continue. Seemed smart.

    - The home button and touchscreen did not work (disabled for the demos).

    - That red and blue JoyCon combo looked even worse in person. Both red or both blue would have been a win I think. But maybe that's my old age lol

    - Zelda looked nice. I did not play it. I didn't want to wait in a 3 hour line for a game that Amazon will send to my house in a month. Watching people play it, it still looked to get framey when a lot is going on. Not sure how close to final build that was. Probably the same build they let media play 2 weeks ago.

    - People seemed to love Arms. Didn't play that either. Doesn't look like my thing.

    - Splatoon 2 was more Splatoon. I didn't care for Splatoon 1, so I couldn't begin to tell you what was added or is different.

    - Mario Kart 8 is the same game with more stuff. I'm not a Mario Kart guy but it looked super smooth running on that screen.

Watching the Super Bowl last night with my wife, who has no prior knowledge of the switch, when their commercial comes on.

Her: "Well, look at you, Nintendo! They've really got something going on there. Man, I miss Zelda...."

So, we'll see if we eventually become a Switch household, lol. :laughy:

Did you intentionally withhold news that the Switch has Zelda as a launch day title? That's not being a very good husband!

lol, no. She just doesn't game by herself much anymore since we have two kids. We do Lego games, and she has a couple of PS3 RPGs shes been working through for a long time, but thats about it. We used to watch G4 a lot back in the day together, so there was a time that she was as up on things as I was, but thats long gone.

She can pick up the Switch and tote Zelda around. It's perfect for her. Kids get the Lego games, she can play Zelda on the Switch.

It's time to be the good husband. Surprise her.

    http://www.denofgeek.com/us/games/n..._medium=referral&utm_campaign=zergnet_1469585

I found this article interesting and thought I'd share. It made me think a little because A) I'm old enough to remember every console that Nintendo has launched and B) I hadn't really thought about it, but I've owned 4 of the 6.

They talk about how the NES apparently saved video games in the US. I was eight years old in 1985 when it hit the market, and every kid in America wanted one. I had no concept of the gaming crash until many, many years later when I watched a show about it on G4. For me, as a kid, we were excited to play a used Atari 2600 that someone had given my family, along with dozens of games. The NES was such an amazing step up, and when I would go to the house of a family who had one, it was like seeing something from the future. My family didn't get one until 1988, and it felt like forever.

In the article, they don't talk about the fact that the SNES was hyped for years by Nintendo and the gaming press. Now, that may have been because the Super Faicom had come out in Japan already and people had a good idea of what the SNES would be, but as a Nintendo Power subscriber, I was fed monthly info and hype for a long, long time and couldn't wait for it. I had an entire book, several hundred pages long, talking about what kinds of games might come out, and how much more powerful it would be than the NES. Not all of it came true, but when I got the system a year after it came out, it was well worth it, and an awesome step up for its time.

I never had my own N64, but a good friend bought one the day it came out in 1996, when we all lived in college dorms together. We played Mario 64 for days on end, lol. I still had my own SNES, and it was ok, but I switched to Sony a year later for the Playstation.

I had no hands on experience with the Gamecube when it first came out. I knew it, and the kinds of games it played from being big into gaming websites and magazines, but the PS2 was my thing. My best friend at the time referred to it as "The Lunchbox" due to its design. Among my age group (early 20s then), it was not respected very much. I didn't actually play games on one until I met my wife and starting hanging out with her in late 2004. She had her own, and we would spend a lot of time playing Mario Cart Double Dash together, and I watched her play Mario Sunshine and a few other games. Later, we'd get Windwaker and take turns.

Similarly, I had almost no experience with the Wii when it came out. We bought ours in 2011, due to a combination of a big sale at Best Buy, and limited time gift cards burning a hole in my pocket. (use it or lose it money). Even though I've had it in the house for more than six years, I've never really gotten into it. But man, the press for it was through the roof.

Ironically, since its the newest one, I paid the least amount of attention to the Wii U. I knew I wasn't going to get it. I was waiting for the PS4, and I've never touched one aside from playing around with Smash Bros at Target.

I must say this is the first Nintendo system that has interested me since the GameCube. The whole home to mobile concept continues to look more and more well executed.

Still I have to wonder what would have happened if Nintendo had partnered with Apple on this. Let Apple handle hardware and OS aspects (iPad Nintendo essentially) while letting Nintendo push their unique gaming lineup right alongside standard mobile apps/games. It would seem the perfect marriage of traditional and mobile/casual gaming. Which makes sense with Nintendo wanting to branch out into mobile gaming recently and Apple considering a re-entry into gaming in the not so distant past.

Nintendo could exclusively use their brands, add their own unique Nintendo flavor to the whole project, and enjoy the rabid Apple fan base in addition to their own. I would have expected a well built easy to use machine that would have appealed to a massive market.

I disagree that outsourcing control of the hardware to a company that traditionally does not care about gaming would have gone well.

Nintendo games are what they are in large part because they are on Nintendo hardware.

Yeah, while the games aren't always for everyone, Nintendo hardware is generally very well made. They understand that their audience is often young, and their stuff is durable.

I should clarify my point by saying I didn't mean Nintendo would simply outsource the hardware and step away.

I meant Nintendo would be the creative force (and it would be their console) but use Apple's ability to integrate ease of use and the consumer-software experience to take the system to new heights. It would still be Nintendo's hardware but created with the advice of Apple on how to create a well built seamless hardware to software experience.

Nintendo has the games and can craft innovative well-built hardware but struggle integrating all this with a modern feeling OS/multi-media experience. They always feel a step behind Sony and MS in this regard. Of course, if you just want to be a gaming console that's fine, simply play games and don't worry about the rest. However, as long as Nintendo insists on dabbling with Netflix streaming, Web browsers, etc.; I think they need a better way of doing it. They seem to be caught in the middle, not really committed to either side. Apple could really push them into a new realm with iOS integration.

I understand Apple may not be into gaming but it would seemingly be a great opportunity for another strong revenue stream. Plus this could work with Google/Android. So Apple is not crucial to my argument.

My point is, Nintendo has the games and hardware ability. However, if they were to implement an actual mobile OS and open the door to letting users play their favorite mobile games they've already downloaded through the App Store or Google Play, it would increase their casual appeal even more. The Switch looks to be a great little console but it feels like its not realizing its full potential.

Apple doesn't do this, though. They don't create stuff for other companies. They make the products they themselves want to use and then sell them based on a presented use case. Apple and Nintendo make hardware the same way: they shape it to the software they want to make. While Apple could give Nintendo a lot of pointers on UI design, ultimately, I don't think this partnership would ever work out the way you're describing it. It would be like two territorial cats trying not to fight.

Why would someone buy a Switch to play Nintendo's mobile games? They already have their phone. I don't see that as failure to realize potential. That's something that doesn't have a use case, IMO. Maybe eventually they can link the mobile games to their bigger Switch cousins through way of download codes, though that would be more marketing than anything really affecting core gameplay. This certainly isn't something Nintendo should be focusing on at launch, when their biggest obstacle is explaining why someone who already has a phone should want a Switch at all. "Look, it plays the same games as your phone!" is not a distinguishing point.

Regarding mobile games on Switch I am saying the user would have access to all the features they enjoy through iOS or Android on the Switch. All mobile games (not just Nintendo), apps, etc. The same people who are buying the Switch now still would but a Google/Apple partnership could garner more attention. Even if Nintendo implemented a mobile OS like Amazon and others have done with Android, that could work.

Overall, I don't think the Switch needs all this to be successful but of any of the big three doing something along these lines Nintendo makes the most sense. They think outside the box more and can implement wilder concepts.

The Switch just needs to be like the Wii: everyone's second choice. Nintendo wins the minute everyone says "I'm definitely buying that to go with what I have already."

It's one hell of a Venn diagram.

Weird turn of events in my small circle of loser friends. I play games with the same 5 dudes all the time. 2 only play PC and we mostly play Rocket League. The other 3 and myself play the console stuff. Of the 4 console dudes (myself included), 3 of us pre-ordered the Switch. Since then we went to Pax South and got to try it out and physicalled used one.

The two other dudes have now cancelled their preorders. One to get a Vive. The other just kind of feels like he's buying it for one game (which I think a lot of people are). So now I'm the only one in my crew with a Switch pre-order... and I'm starting to wonder if I, also, should let it come out and play Zelda on Wii U and get one later when there's more stuff out for it.

Nintendo should at least come clean about what VC titles will be available. Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

Anyone else buy this thing? Trying to see what other people think of the grip. I cannot use it. It just doesn't work if you've got big hands. Pro controller is great though.... $70 is not.

I dislike the grip on the Switch with both Joycons in. Too small for my hands. The Joycon combo controller works OK. I'm trying to find a Pro controller.
