Found this article, hope you enjoy and let the the debate begin. http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nfl/miami-dolphins/article126354644.html Reshad Jones began 2016 hoping for more money. He ended the year simply wishing he could play. Jones, the Dolphins’ Pro Bowl safety, appeared in six games last season after suffering a significant rotator cuff injury in October. Some three months after surgery, Jones is feeling much better. “Every time I would see him, he’d tell me how he could play that game, which always kind of hurt me a little bit, because I’m thinking, ‘You’re pretty good. Don’t tell me that,’ ” Adam Gase told reporters Wednesday. Still, Gase wouldn’t commit to Jones being ready for the start of organized team activities in a few months. But if he doesn’t get a new contract between now and then, Jones might not be there anyway. He skipped all of the team’s voluntary spring workouts and the first day of mandatory minicamp last year to send a message: he wants a new deal. He never got it. Absolutely a priority if he's deemed healthy. It's either him, or pay a bunch for someone else (Berry?....but I think he'll get tagged).
might be wise to let him walk in 14 months. Depends if he plays at a super level this season. Age/injury, and drafting his replacement would be a good idea this year. I don't want to over pay for a 30+ year old player
I don't think he holds out considering he was injured all season. More likely, I think he returns to form and then gets extended like the best safety in the league would. Because that's what Reshad Jones is.
He was our best player (or at least co-best player) on defense when healthy this year. If he looks like he's going to be healthy, we need to play him. We don't need him for 5 years, I'd pay just to have 2-3 healthy years out of the guy.
Hopefully, he's healthy. I would let him rehab and get back into playing shape, and if he looks good in the preseason, then we talk about an extension. He's already one of the highest paid players at his position in the league and certainly doesn't need a raise. If he won't play ball and sign a fair deal, then tag him a year from now.
No way, no how do we move on from him. He transforms this defense. He is an ELITE playmaker. Safeties can play well into their 30s. Just pay him.
No offense to Rashad....he is an amazing player....but he already gets paid like one. I have no sympathy for the fairly paid rich who want more.
The better safeties in the league are being paid 10-11m a year. I believe Reshad Jones is being paid 8m this year, but I can't remember.
He's the 10th highest paid safety in the NFL at about $7mil per year. However, his average guaranteed is about $3.75 mil per year which makes him the 5th highest paid. He's the 6th highest in regards to total guaranteed money for his contract at $15mil. If you go by total contract value, he's 11th in the league at about $28mil. In comparison, the top 3 safeties make between $51-$62 mil.
Hard hitting safeties like Reshead and Bob Sanders and Palomalu fall off a cliff when it comes to health. They throw their bodies around to be awesome players but it's terrible for staying on the field. I wouldn't give him a long term deal unless he is consistently healthy in 2017. He'll be 30 when his contract is up. I wouldn't give a 30 year old RB a long term deal. I think the same for a hard hitting safety.
If you look just at Strong Safety's though, Jones is already the league's highest paid, averaging 7m a year, just slightly more than Chancellor. Either way, as you said, he was the 5th highest paid safety in the league overall in 2016. In 2017, he'll be the 8th highest paid (according to Over the Cap). When you're already in the top 10, you don't need a raise. He does need to be extended if he's healthy. Probably a three year deal averaging between 10-11m.
He's damaged goods now! That shoulder is only going to go downhill from here! Find his replacement and let him go in a year! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm torn on this one. Obviously he's a top tier safety, homegrown, the kind of guy you prioritize locking up. OTOH he's great in the box on a team that is in desperate need of a centerfielder type safety. I wouldnt be mad if the Dolphins pulled a Belichick and traded Reshad to a NFC team or non contending AFC team so that they could have more flexibility in signing other players.
After missing most of a season, I don't see how he has the leverage to demand a better contract. If anything, he has to prove there is no long-term issue with his shoulder by getting through 2017 without going on IR. Great player, and I'd love to see him locked up long-term, but we need to know 2016 was a fluke, not the start of health issues year-after-year.
Those Belicek trades are not the premier player at their positions...so I disagree with your philosophy in this case.
You cannot predict injury or lack of...he's been pretty durable in his tenure..and he's a great player... Do we have the option to let him play out another year? I know he sat out this past offseason but I forgot how things ended.
So, do you offer an extension for a bit more money per year? With the modest risk he is starting to break down physically and gets injured a lot going forward? Or do you make 2017 a 'prove it' year for staying healthy and playing well -then give him a BIG contract? I'd roll the dice on a contract extension if Jones is willing to do it. Otherwise, let him play out his current one and go from there.
Jamie Collins and Chandler Jones are pretty good, no? And Logan Mankins before them. Lawyer Millow was regarded as a top tier safety, he wasn't traded he was cut. Not saying Reshad should be traded only that I would understand the logic behind it if it happened.
Yes. He's under contract for 2017 with a cap number of just over 8 million. There is no need to resign him at this point, and no burning need to extend him yet. If all else fails, he can be slapped with the franchise tag a year from now, likely for between 10-11m. If that were to happen, they could even potentially tag him again for 2019 at about 14-15m if they wanted to. I don't think it would come to that though.
Sad to say but this is likely where we find ourselves in a year's time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
