Of course. You can only judge him when he plays well. Every game must be within reach so you can accurately assess him. We must never ask that his play elevate the others around him when things don't start well. If they're down 14-0, ****ing cancel the game. Hand Tanny his massive paycheck.
At the same time, it doesn't help your defense when your first three possessions consist of missed FG, INT and 3 and out. This game was a classic game of bad offensive play and bad defensive play feeding on itself and turning into just a horrible game. We all wanted to believe that this team, and Tannehill, had turned the corner. This was a sharp reminder that they both have some major flaws.
In fairness, at least talking about time of possession, the first int wasn't bad, other than no points being scored. The drive allowed the defense to rest.
Yeah, I'm simply speaking about the defense being on the field too much. That being said, it's pretty demoralizing for your offense to watch the defense give up a td in 3 minutes or less to start the game, then watch the opponent drive the field for another score on their second possession.
I think poor play fed on itself on both sides of the ball. When you neutralize Miami's pass rush, it exposes our secondary for what it is, 3 back ups and 1 quality starter. I think we all know that Lippet is a project, McCain is a slot corner, Thomas is a backup and Maxwell someone who should be the 2nd or 3rd option on the team. A veteran QB with a very good OL will give this defense problems.
We can sit here for days trying to figure this one out.. Under talented.. Not emotionally ready to play on the road. Out coached.. Could be one of the three, or all three, or two out of three..don't know..
What bugged me was them falling down in the first quarter, how do you not know going in you might need longer cleats?
I just want to clarify, my opinion on Tannehill during yesterday's game is in no way a conviction on him one way or another. It's simply what I thought of those specific plays. He made mistakes. It's that simple. It's not me saying we should cut him, or he sucks. But, it's concerning to me that it continues his string of bad games, in big games. Yes the defense sucked, yes it put us into obvious passing situations fairly early and that contributes to the second half performance from Ryan where it appears he's pressing a bit. Overall, a lot of guys yesterday had a bit of a deer in headlights look when things went south as quick as they did, that's unfortunate. I do wonder though, if Parker hauls that pass in or if Tannehill does something other than stare down Parker the whole way and at least tries to hold the safety before locking on and throwing the ball... I wonder if things would have been different. Maybe not, and probably not because Baltimore just abused our defense all game long, but 7 there might have really helped boost the confidence in the offense. It's sad that I've got to clarify that because some are going to take it personally if you criticize 17, but after seeing some of those plays again last night and this morning before work, I still stand by what I said. I'm not blaming him for the loss by any means, and I'm not saying anything horrifically bad, it's just a critique on a few key plays, but I expected a bit more than I saw from him yesterday given what we saw the last few weeks encouraging performances. That last part though, that applies to everyone as well.
^exactly. He made mistakes and had a bad game. If he was a "terrible" quarterback he wouldn't have been 29-40, but rather 17-40 or something. And Webb's int was just a helluva play on his behalf. Bad game all around. Everyone share the blame. Get back to it this week and beat AZ, simple as that
I think the title of this thread is quite ironic after that game, RT might not be THE reason we lost, but he was THE reason we weren't in the game at all, the O was pathetic, and that was with decent blocking and run game. Imo, this was the worst game of his career, mainly because he had decent blocking and an adequate run game, but also because this was a game that he HAD to play good in, and in what seemed to be a classic case of "in critical times you revert to what is natural", he choked. Whether it's fortunate for RT or not, he'll get a chance to redeem himself, actually, probably multiple chances, a loss next week will probably not eliminate us.
I don't think you can take it that far. I mean, we got down the field pretty easily on our first drive, Franks misses the chance at 3. If I'm not mistaken the second drive was the INT on the pass to Parker that just as easily could have been a TD. Which again, if I'm remembering correctly would have put us at 14-10, rather than 14-0. So, I don't think that's a fair point to make really. The defense just kept giving up TD after TD, and by that point, your offense becomes one dimensional, and it's pretty hard to win that way regardless of who is under center. I'm not even going to touch the rest of that, because, well I just don't want to be that involved in the Tannehill discussion to that extent.
Yes, it could have been a TD, but it also could have been an INT, and the primary reason for that was RT staring Parker down, we can't give RT a pass on that, and we can't say Parker SHOULD have caught it, at best you can say he COULD have caught it, but when a defender gets 2 hands on the ball you can't say that the WR should have caught it, that's called a defended pass. This is why I can't be on board with just adding 7 points, because the chance of Parker catching the ball was low, if Parker had just dropped the pass then I could be on board, but the truth is, that pass should not have been thrown to begin with, you don't take chances like that in the RZ that early in the game. That pass took points off the board, so hard for me to add points based on that play.
You're right, it was the second possession that ended with the INT. Flacco gave it right back and we started the next possession on their 38. Tannehill hit a 7-yard pass on first down, then Parker had a false start, then Ajayi lost four yards, then RT threw a 2-yard pass on 3 and 12. Then we punted. I don't know what effect that possession had on team morale, but it depressed the hell out of me.
I don't necessarily disagree. As I said post game, I thought Tannehill should have done a better job trying to look off the safety. It sure appears he stared Parker down the whole way which makes it a pretty easy play for a guy playing safety with that speed to get there, he obviously knows the corner is in man. Nobody is saying to add points... I just don't think you can go as far as to say he's the reason we weren't in the game either. Guys still have to make plays. Parker in my opinion isn't aggressive enough. However, he likely catches it if the safety doesn't get there. You could break it down many ways, with many conclusions, none of us will ever be right, except in our own minds.
Exactly. That next drive for the offense essentially ended the game as the defense then got us down 21-0. That post Maxwell INT possession for the offense isn't on Tannehill. So, again, I get it, it's easy to say well we didn't score points so he's part of the reason we aren't in it... but that's just not entirely true, or fair, or objective. If I'm not mistaken, that 3rd down pass for 2 yards was also due to a quick decision from an unblocked blitzer from his right as well. Everyone was bad. It's that simple.
I get your point, but for me, I see an OL doing a decent job, the run game doing a decent job, and the QB having a horrible game, we were gifted 6 points on a 9 yard drive, so imo, our offensive woes fall squarely on the QB in this game, and when things got tough, he really went south. So for these reasons I have to hold the QB accountable for our offensive ineptitude, but I respect your stance on the matter.
Fair enough I guess. Obviously I don't agree with your take that it's all on him on the offense, I didn't like some of his play in the game, I definitely wouldn't say it was horrible. It wasn't good enough, but nobody's performance on this team was, there was no way we were winning that game regardless. I think the only person I can say had a good game yesterday was Jay Ajayi, and unfortunately due to the game getting away from us he only had 12 carries. Like you said, we're all entitled to our opinions, even if they are different. It's all good.
Don't feel bad even the Ravens said if you take away his first read he is pretty much done. The watched him lock onto the receiver and pursued that.
That's really... not the point here. He made the right decision on the play. He just needed to do one of two things I'd say from seeing only the TV copy... Either try and freeze or look off the safety, or throw it a touch earlier so the safety can't get there. You may not have gotten the 7 then, but that man coverage was pretty tight. He put that ball in the perfect spot for Devante only to catch it. Of course, that's IF the safety wasn't there. I've already said this too, but Devante could have likely played that better as well. A number of ways it could go when you look at it, but if you want to base it off that quote... go for it, I guess?
Firstly, cheers! I always find it pleasant to have civil discourse, even though we may disagree. I think one thing we probably agree upon though, is that RT's stance on this team will come down to how he plays down the stretch, and it will be interesting to see how he responds to this.
When we were down 10 and 6 vs. the Chargers/Rams - those games were closely fought and within reach. The Foxboro game is the only one this season with it out of hand where he helped put some points (all second half during a blowout) on the board to make it more respectable - alas we already had the argument about "why" it even happened in the first place and I don't feel like doing that dance with you again. So back to the Ravens game. Here we have our big money QB and suddenly 14-0 feels insurmountable to the point where even the game's commentators are directly stating we're not built to overcome leads like that. That should never be the case with someone considered a "franchise QB" back there - especially in the 1st half. The team looks to that "franchise" guy to fire back, motivate. More often than not the entire team folds, including the offense which almost never plays big in big games during this Tannehill era. But again, now people want to look this game off because "the entire team played poorly" ......... this is more excuse making. We played a division leader and someone fighting for playoff position while on the road. This was a litmus test more than any team we faced on that 6 game win streak - which oh btw are a collective 26-44 this year. The kid is showing you he's still more game-manager right now then he is a game-changer and proven by the fact that we keep having to have these kinds of conversations. There are 4 more massively important games coming up and he'll get some more chances, but we had destiny in the palm of our hands and the offense didn't go out with guns blazing vs. the Ravens. They turtled. If you don't want to put more responsibility on the position that historically is looked to as the general - fine. Not me though.
This whole conversation is insane. Dude has had 4th quarter comebacks this year, but again, after one game, we're back to saying he can't bring a team back. Crazy pills.
It's not that he can't bring the team back. He did against LA for example. It's that he reverted to bad habits this time. He was supposed to have taken a step forward remember? Well he just went right back then. Down 21 is pretty daunting but not insurmountable. I'd like to see him try even if we came up short. Not revert to bad habits again.
Don't waste your breath man. Guys like Resnor want to tout wins vs. powder puffs and ignore the glaring inefficiencies in big games vs. upper echelon opponents. Seriously ..... they finally move into the 6th playoff spot with destiny in their own hands and what happened right on cue? Tannehill regressed.
He ain't the guy if he crawls back into his shell when the task is a little daunting. More Of what he did against the Rams. Less of what we saw against Balt. Raiders scored 29 unanswered.
Yes, yes they did. However, I'm not inclined to say that any offense should have to score more than 31 when they have a 31-14 point lead halfway through the 3rd quarter. I mean, at some point, the defense needs to freaking make stops. Even in yesterday's game, special teams misses a field goal, decease gives up another drive for a td, and you're down 14-0, with zero evidence that the defense will ever get a stop. Parker can't fight for a ball, and you have a turnover, and then another td by the Ravens. 21-0. Yes, the offense needs to be better. But the defense is absolutely atrocious. The problem is, neither unit appears able to increase their play when the other unit needs some help. Complementary football...maybe we actually need a coverage playmaker on defense.
Marino, Rodgers, Rapist, or Brees couldn't have won that game yesterday. The team as a whole failed, every unit.
Yes I Said last week that the offense scored exactly what the niners defense had allowed on average all year 31 pts. So I wasn't super impressed but at least we took what they've been giving out. But I pointed out the defense was getting moved on all game and that was more worrisome.
You must have been dying the last seven weeks. Now one bad game and you come back with your nonsense. One bad game isn't regressing. Blake Bortles is regression. Tannehill is one game pressing to get his team back into the game and missing on a couple of passes
David Carr basically did it. Not that I fault Ryan for not being an elite QB, we know he isn't that. But certain QBs like the ones you mentioned have the ability to never be out of games. To be clear. NOT A KNOCK ON RYAN. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I agree for the most part. But let's be honest, he missed more than a couple of passes. But I didn't overreact to his great game last week so I'm not going to overreact to his poor game Sunday. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Did you not hear the commentators make the statement? First the guy said it, and then he said when he spoke to the Ravens they also said it. Sooooooooooooooo it is the truth to them.
