FFXV deluxe edition is still up for preorder. I don't even have a PS4, but it's somewhat tempting, since I also want to play Dragon Quest Builders and Dragon Quest XI.

Deluxe edition is not a big deal on this one, it is really just the prequel movie and the game in a different case. It doesn't have the soundtrack or anything.

Yeah, after I knew that I could buy the movie on its own, I did that and redid my preorder as a standard edition. Also, the stand alone movie had the anime series, if that interests you, and the one that comes with the game does not.

But, one month to go! My wife happens to have the day off, and is cool with me going to get the game that morning and playing all afternoon. I'm a lucky man. She's gonna take our younger daughter out for the day.

I don't count on bonus editions to give me a game's soundtrack. Those are acquired... elsewhere...

I hope this goes better for you than FF13 did for me. I hated what they showed of the game for 2 years, finally got on board the hype train as release neared, went to the midnight launch, brought it hope, popped it in, and... UGH.

Well, we all of course hope that 15 is better than 13. For me though, 13's biggest drawbacks were

    A) its maddening dedication to being linear, and the fact that once you went through an area, that was it, and you couldn't go back in mos cases. In some cases, you didn't even get to choose how long you stayed, and were hurried through like an action title, not a RPG.

    B) Once you did get to play in open areas more typical of a FF game, they were overwhelmingly dead and bleak, along with very little variation. The game was empty and lifeless, both in a literal and figurative way.

15 looks to better both of these in a major way. The questions now are whether they can do a good job of depth and story telling, and how well the battle system actually works. But on the big picture, "will I like the experience of playing this game", it looks solid for me.

I can handle linearity. FF13's worst part is that you never knew what the hell was going on or why. It was the absolute worst narrative ever.

It was weird, yes. I kept expecting them to go into some deeper detail and explain the backstory, and why things were the way they were, but it never happened. It felt like they got to a certain part of the story, and just kind of got lazy or ran out of time. Plenty of chances, and they never took them. Just left more questions the further you got, and then it was a dead end wall.

Then, when there was a sequal, I felt for sure they'd use it to tighten up loose ends. So what do they do? Go extra weird, make even less sense, and end the game on a bleak, depressing cliffhanger that was never resolved.

True fact about FF13's development: it was actually two or three different groups/projects that got cobbled together into one product starting about 1 year before release. The E3 demo/trailer was sort of an internal idea test that they had no choice but to shovel into a game somehow. Which we didn't find out about until after the game was released, of course.

Motomu Toriyama is the absolute worst and they have completely removed him from the Final Fantasy series.

I'm slowly leaning towards getting a PS4. As good as the PC version of FF15 would be, waiting a year wouldn't be desirable, and then I'd get access to DQ11, DQB, and FF12 as well.

I remember the whole Fabula Novala Crystalis deal, and how it was supposed to be three games that shared the same universe. I wasn't aware that 13 didn't have one steady development team, though. I remember talking with a few friends back then, and saying that the wait between 12 and 13 was so long, that it must be the best one yet. HA! Fooled us.

FNC was supposed to be FF13, FF Versus 13, and FF Agito 13. FF13 was released, Agito 13 became Type-0, with the Agito title reused in the Type-0 spinoff FF Agito, and Versus 13 obviously became FF15 (and almost all of its FNC links have been totally severed.)

Well, assuming that ff15 sells well enough to keep the franchise in business, I'm crossing my fingers that they get to work next year with one new vision in putting together the next game from the ground up. The last 10 years seem to have been a mess, and not the best way to run a gaming studio.

The numerical FFs have been a mess. The FF franchise as a whole has been fine. They've spun the series off multiple times a year. 2014, for instance, had FFXIV Heavensward, FF13 Lightning Returns, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call, FF Agito, FF Record Keeper, FF7 G-Bike, and FF Explorers.

But yes, FFXV needs to be an enormous hit to sustain the metaseries, or the brand name will matter very little.

US Gamer has some sort of reviewer preview edition of the game and is writing the hell out of it.

Part 1 goes into how the game sets up, part 2 goes in depth on the battle system, and part 3 seems to be saying "this is really damn good."

Looks like, despite this being a relatively open world game, it's not notably dense like, say, Skyrim. It's a sprawling world but you're not going to find missions EVERYWHERE.

Thank you for sharing those, Desides. After reading all three, I feel even better about the game than I did before. There are things that I'm worried about, but I'm curious about them as well. Such as healing before camping and magic usage. I'm guessing that as you level up, you'll be able to nudge your companions into certain roles. Beyond that, as I've mentioned about other titles, I love to take things at a slow, methodical pace, explore the heck out of the area, and learn as much as I can before moving on. It seems that FFXV allows this fully, and even encourages it, so that makes me comfortable.

Curious about how the DLC will work. I guess each will be an add on story? Something that adds to the game's world and lore?

They've hinted before that the character DLC will take place at various points during the main story. So, they'll basically be side stories that occur offscreen during the main game.

The playable Lunafreya thing is interesting, because it could either be a way to add her to the main party during the story, or another character DLC that has you playing as her during her segments of the main story. There's already some imagery where she's confronting Leviathan, so maybe that's a boss fight.

Let us know, man! I admit that I'm curious. Right now, despite the glowing reviews, it looks like FF Jr to me. But if its worthwhile, then maybe I'll pick it up next summer at a discount when I'm done with all of the games currently on my list.

I don't live in the modern world, and can't get broadband at my house. So, no demos for me, sadly. My gaming experience is exactly the same as it was 10 years ago, and pretty much similar to 15 years ago. But I read a lot of articles and reviews.

A pretty long article about the combat in the game that paints it in a very positive light. I'm still uncertain how much I'll like it myself. While I love the ability to customize things to the max while in menus, as the game is paused, I am absolutlely not someone who excels at "fast paced combat" and switching things up on the fly. I tend to pick a strategy before a battle, and roll with it, usually using one or two techniques. We'll see how that works out in FF15.

There is a wait mode option that makes combat function similar to previous FFs.

It won't be like FF12, but it will certainly give you time to make decisions with Noctis.

I think that FF12 was the absolute pinnacle of RPG battle systems as well. Everything since then has been downhill. I'm going to experiement with both systems that 15 offers, and see what works for me best. I'm still terribly disapointed that we aren't able to control the other party members, but I'm hoping that we'll be able to build and level them up in a way that highly encourages them to behave in a way that we desire. Otherwise, it becomes like Mass Effect, where your party members are fairly useless and you cannot depend on them.

I've become less confident in a quick/timely PC version release of FFXV, so… I just preordered on Amazon for $12 off (thanks, Prime!) and I'll buy a PS4 Pro next week.

probably a good call. I'm guessing it's well over a year for that. I dont think I'm going to spring for a Pro tho. I play so much more on PC, doesnt seem worth it to me.

I just built a $2300 gaming PC. So, believe me, the value is bugging me. But the game is apparently running more stably on the PS4 Pro, and there are other PS4 games I want to play, like Dragon Quest Builders and the forthcoming Dragon Quest XI. I'm not confident in those games getting PC versions either. So the Pro is probably worth it as I'll be keeping it for a couple of years.

    Next: Nintendo Switch in March-ish.

    http://www.rpgsite.net/news/5071-ne...featuring-shiva-altissia-and-chainsaw-weapons

Some nice new screen shots, featuring Shiva, and the city of Altissia, as well as what appears to be a character info screen (its in Japanese)

Also, an interview with Square brand manager Shinji Hashimoto. It wouldn't likely be all that interesting, except for the fact that its someone official commenting on a lot of things that are usually pure speculation:

    http://gametransfers.com/square-eni...nal-fantasy-x-3-and-final-fantasy-vii-remake/

I'll point out here that the first question is actually BS now, since the game's 10th anniversary passed last month.

So basically the guy said nothing. The statement that Lightning is "immensely popular" is a bit off-putting, though.

As for FFXII, it's possible he's referring to the anniversary of the International Zodiac Job System, on which the HD remake is based. IZJS was released August 9, 2007. The ten year anniversary of that would be August 9, 2017. So we're looking at probably a late Q2 release in Japan, possibly delayed to Q3 if FF7r isn't ready to go this year.

I have to think that the FF12 remaster comes out in 2017, regardless of when the 7 remake is ready. If they're both good to go, I bet they just split them up by about six months. My wild guess is that 12 comes out in the late spring, and 7 is out at the end of the year.
