Some are saying Williams' career might be over. Landry seems more fired up this year, and a bit rougher/more aggressive somehow. Unfortunate but completely legal hit, IMO. He wasn't in the air coming down, and it wasn't helmet to helmet.
What a shame, I hope he fully recovers. That being said, IMO that was a legal play and I personally think that's very important. If he really did end another players career, it's better not on a dirty play.
Hope he is able to fully recover from it.. with that said its part of football and Landry did nothing wrong.. unfortunate and hope Aaron can make it onto the field someday
Landry was called for unnecessary roughness for the contact, so not really legal. The Bills just took a holding call instead.
Actually they declined the holding call and took the 15 yard penalty. But just because it was called doesn't mean it was illegal. It was a bad call IMO.
i dont like it , legal or not. i wouldnt want it to happen to one of our players and there were other ways landry could have taken williams out. jmo a think he will get a fine
Here's the play on NFL.com. Or this:
Ah, corrected. You're right. They took the 15 yard roughness call. Not sure what we call legal or illegal though. To my mind anything that incurs a foul is an illegal play - that's why it incurs a foul. Unless you're saying you just disagree with the call. The thing is, if you hit a guy in the head, with your shoulder when you're just blocking and he's basically upright....you're hitting too high. I wonder if an increased focus on blocking from the WR hasn't had Juice really want to put enough it but he isn't quite comfortable with the art of blocking, so it results in him just throwing himself like this.
Lol. This goes beyond homerism. I'd bet bottom dollar if that were Edelman doing the exact same thing to Reshad Jones you would say the exact opposite. You lose All credibility of objectivity with that comment. That aside, if you hadn't stopped watching football in the early 90's you'd realize that A. The crack back block had been outlawed for years. B. Any blindside hit of any sort - on offense, defense, or special teams - has been outlawed for A long time as well. In fact, that very block would be a text book case of what Noy to do because it is illegal. C. Landry also went high on the block and that too is illegal. Now, some old school fans may not like those rules. Which is their prerogative. But that hit was and has been illegal on three levels for years now. I love Landry's toughness. And I suspect there was a lot of animosity and history to that hit. But be that as it may it was a clearly bad hit and he will be fined significantly for it. It is also sad for the kid.
Landry needs to take a step back and realize how his actions affect others on the field. Whether it's hurting the team with taunting/unsportsmanlike penalties or more seriously his actions regarding other players. Being self centered won't get him where he wants to go.
It was illegal, he left his feet. I will say this though; Landry could have blocked him legally and it might have ended just as bad. Williams wasn't being aware at all, I hope he fully recovers though.
I know leaving your feet, errr or skates, to give a hit is illegal in hockey, but I don't recall it being so in football. Though it would probably be a good rule to implement on vulnerable players.
You may be right, this is what I dug up; http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...t-defenseless-players-expand-launching-rules/ Landry's block may have been considered a launch, unsure if that rule covers offensive players.
To me, that's the kind of "football" that I think is for idiots. A player doesn't need to be de-cleated to be effectively blocked. I will never understand why some people feel those plays are exciting. To me, it's gruesome. Jesus, you could break someone's neck doing that, and a broken neck isn't a broken hand or a broken leg. To me, that kind of hit is all risk and no reward. Just block the guy. Why blow him up? It just doesn't make any sense. That's just not the kind of thing I want to see on any NFL field and certainly not from a Miami Dolphin. I like the comments from Landry but damn dude--not cool. Not cool at all. This is the kind of attitude that the NFL is up against though. It's going to take a long time before player's realize how f'ing stupid this stuff is. Sad thing is, it's a generational thing with fans too. Older fans love it. I bet not anyone under 30 was thinking "great hit!" If they were, shame on them. F that.
Textbook block. If the player hadn't of fell to the ground in agony I bet no flag would have been thrown. I hope he recovers 100%, but that's football.
He's going to get fined and possibly suspended. The refs are going to call that a penalty 100 out of 100 times. I don't think it was dirty but it was unnecessary and the refs are always going to call that. It was high and the player was blindsided, they are always going to call that.
I think Gase should have sat him after that block. I have been saying it all season long, but Jarvis Landry has an attitude problem that I think, ends with a nasty divorce from this team. He has all the talent in the world, but he can't seem to harness his emotions correctly, all of the time, and it comes back to hurt this team. He cost the team points today, which is secondary to him possibly costing a man his livelihood. It is clearly an illegal block, crack back, launched himself into the defender and hit him high, to boot. It was a recipe for disaster, and it was exactly that. He can be sorry and remorseful, which I think he is, and still be a guy who throws dirty blocks and constantly makes himself look like a moron after first down catches. His quote after spinning the ball on the Bills sideline? "I didn't know I couldn't do that", or something close to that. I hope Aaron Williams recovers. And I hope you guys remember this when a safety decides to lay a massive hit on LAndry in the coming weeks. He has it coming.
So much this. The ONLY reason for that kind of head shot, is the willful decision to hurt your opponent. As you say, he could of thrown a perfectly clean block into his chest. He didn't have to charge up, leave his feet, and launch himself into his chest either. Simply get into position, stand his ground, and make contact to disrupt/stop his progress. What Landry did was dirty as ****, IMO. That block was meant to devastate. And it did. It's crazy to me that NFL players don't look out for each other, knowing how fragile their bodies are. Knowing about the consequences of concussions and other various injuries. They're so quick to point the finger at the NFL for not protecting them, but they refuse to protect each other. Hope Aaron Williams is OK.
How the **** is launching for a head shot "textbook" blocking? That's not even close to textbook. Textbook blocking involves keeping both feet on the ground... Hence the ****ing penalty... That's like saying safeties/LB's leading with their helmets into receivers is textbook tackling... It's not.
Well said, I have mixed emotions over the play. In the game thread, I cursed him for hurting the team again. It's an unsafe play, but it's also a play that shows the roots of the game. It's a physical game. You want to be physical and dominate the other team. That's clearly been the objective for this team the past two weeks. I don't think it was a headshot though. It looks more like shoulder to shoulder to me. However, he does go high. I'd like to know if there were some interactions between Williams and Landry prior to that play. It's an unsafe play though. He could have just blocked him normally, sure, but again, that goes against the toughness of the game thing... At some point though, he's got to realize that he's clearly got a target on his back by officials. It's time to just calm down, play physical, but play technically sound football. Have fun, enjoy your success, but be respectful about it. We can all look at spinning the ball and say... that's a terrible call! Sure, but who knows what he said to the sidelines? Anybody? Nope. You dont. He's barking at them though, he probably said something that warranted the flag. We'll never know, but he clearly runs his mouth an awful lot out there. As for Williams... Obviously I hope he's going to be ok ultimately. Never want to see a guy hurt like that. It's brutal. Williams though... you've got to be aware of your surroundings. I'm in no way blaming him for what happened, but you've got to be aware, he's out there running around carefree. Probably because these guys feel so protected now. Bottom line, I just wish it didn't happen. Hopefully Landry can get his emotions in check, or Gase can get him to. He's so talented. He can be as fired up, and physical as he wants. Just... don't cross the lines man. Don't do stupid things. Don't say stupid things on the field to get yourself in in a position to be flagged. Just... play the game. Play it the way you do, because he's so good. You can have that edge to you... just don't cross that line. It shouldnt be that difficult. I'd be shocked though if he doesnt see some sort of discipline.
He lead with his shoulder which was good but he kind of launched himself. That's why the flag was thrown and I agree with the call. Landry's fire and toughness is admirable but I'd like to see him dial it down a bit so he doesn't get himself or the team in trouble. Be physical. Be tough. But be smart. My thoughts and prayers are with Aaron Williams. I hope it all turns out good for him. With that all being said, I love the new attitude and physicality we're bringing. Feels good to bully the Bills and turn the tables. It's about time! Don't come into our house and think you're not going to get a fight. It's a new era.
See, that's the thing. I watch the play, and I go, ok, nice physical block Landry. But when you slow it down... I think you see the problem with the hit. It's not that it's a head shot, because I don't think it is. It looks shoulder to shoulder/chest to me. The problem is how Landry launches himself upwards, and into Williams up high. In a split second like that for the officials, they're going to call that all day long because it looks like a head shot. The way Landry launches himself, makes it look that way too. I'd be willing to bet, if he doesnt launch upwards into Williams up high like that and just drives forward into him without that "launch" or intent on a punishing blow, just plays Williams' body level on the play, they don't call it, and Williams likely isn't in the hospital.
I think people already forgot Tony Bua's block. Landry's was no different. For those saying it's a crack back block, it was not. Crack back blocks are below the waist.
I'm OK with it. If it's the other way around and Landry gets hit the same way on a slant, it'd be legal.
I think the bigger issue is Williams plays like an absolute idiot on the play. He's the safety. He can absolutely see where Landry is on the play. In fact, given hes our best wr, i bet he purposely looked to see ehere #14 was before the play started. Once he recognizes it's a run, he should be ready for a block. Yet he basically allows himself to get blindsided...how?
if lundry is going high, why did he hit him in the chest with his shoulder? He isn't that awful of a player to miss that terribly if he was trying to go high. Legal hit that the refs overreacted on.
I disagree 100%. Not a hit to the head. Didn't leave his feet. Not dirty. Not trying to injury. IMO, the only reason a flag was thrown was because Williams went down. If Williams had slipped the block or if Landry had glanced off of him, no flag.
He did get about 3 inches off the ground, so I guess technically, he left his feet. I think this is mostly overreaction because Williams got hurt.
Whatever kind of block that you want to call it, and regardless of whether it was technically illegal, it was dirty and uncalled for. If it was legal before, it needs to not be legal now. It serves no purpose other than to hurt people. He likely could have shoved him to the ground easily just using his arms. I don't want the other team doing that to our players, and ours don't need to do it to them. I was honestly scared for the player as he was laying on the field thrashing. He looked as if he suffered something far worse than what you'd normally consider a football injury. Its one thing for a guy to hurt their ankle, knee or shoulder. You don't want someone being hurt in a way that effects their life off the field. Based on his history, I hope for his sake that he decides to step away and not play again, for his own good.
Reports are he got an precautionary MRI and went home with the team. He had a mouth full of blood after the hit. Landry lead with his shoulder but needed to come down on the hit.
I disagree. This was a hard hit. It was a shoulder to chest hit. Williams has a history of a neck injury. Maybe that's why this hurt him so bad? 99% of the time this type of block shakes a player up, but they come back the next play or two. And when they do they play a little slower due to being scared.
Dirty play by a guy that consistently plays on the edge. He's a hot head on the field, tho not quite at the level of his former teammate in NY. He cracked back, launched and hit the defender in the head. Pretty much checks all the boxes. He's a really good player. Needs to reign it in. That was his second personal foul of the game. The result was unfortunate but that's a football play all around. The rule against launching is for defenseless players. Wasn't a crack back because it was above the waist and wasn't a blindside hit because Williams was taking the angle where he probably would've made the stop and Jarvis came from the front. He gets his head around late and couldn't brace for the hit. If this was a special teams play it wouldn't have even been flagged. Jarvis is going to get fined because of league politics but anything more than that would be egregious. I also find it ridiculous that some of you want to bench our best receiver I guess you don't like winning games.
