I am glad Parker maybe back, and our backs are getting healthier. However, we have to start using Landry the right way. Enough of these one-yard-behind-the-line passes and bubble screens. I don't care if it's the same as a run, because it risks injury and usually doesn't work and leaves us in 2nd and long anyway (or a holding penalty). Get him in the slot, let him drag across the field, curl him out (like the pass against Houston) and let him move the chains. We will see the proper utilization of the slot WR this weekend, as NE has perfected it. Yes I know Landry has had the most catches in two years than any other WR, but that's a little exaggerated with these short passes. Gase needs to expose him against a LB or a nickel back.
New England is beat up at both LB and CB, so hopefully we'll be able to take advantage of that with our short passing game. I've gotten a little tired of the endless WR screen passes too.
Um, yeah, I'd like that too but he needs to get separation to do so. I watched him closely in that Seattle game and he didn't play any better than our other WRs
Over / under on how many lateral passes to Landry this week. Let's put the number at 19. I'll take the over. 17 of them will go for negative yards.
I also would like to see less punt returns, except for crucial times. Less Landry and More Landry. Less bubble screens, reverses and punt returns, less passes, more verticals and deeper curls. I would love to see less catches and more yards. He is not an Alpha X, but look at a box score for Edelman or Amendola.
I think this might be the record for fastest playcall complaint ****-post in the history of this website at just under two weeks of a tenure.
Im not opposed to the bubble screens, although maybe not at such a high rate. It opens up some nice lanes for some other guy's if the Defense is trained to stop it and we run a different play out of that set. It gets the LB's leaning his way opening up some potential nice runs for Foster. What I have been begging for and still yet to see is the back shoulder throws...why are we not doing this? Ryan's best attribute is intermediate accuracy and we have had some Wr's on the team who are ideal for this. Landry being one Parker, Matthews last season, Cameron. Maybe Gase does plan on using this and we have just not seen it yet. Manning certainly did it and Cutler as well. It is such an effective route and like the crane technique..if done right? No can defend.
Four things: 1. Adam Gase's offense uses a lot of screens. 2. Landry's at his best with the ball in his hands. 3. We need Devante out there to move Landry inside and draw attention away. 4. He's still our best punt returner.
It's a tongue in cheek comment / purposeful overreaction dummy. I noticed one last week and it was just too soon after what we saw from Philbin's playcalling.
Yeah, I've been saying this a bunch. Landry needs to be utilized like NE uses Amendola and Edeleman. Totally agree on the back shoulder throws. Look at what Fitzpatrick did with those on Thursday night.
Agree with the OP. One of the biggest disappointments to come out of Week 1 for me was the playcalling. Not because i thought it was terrible per say but i was expecting and still do expect a lot better out of Gase. Good news he seems disappointed in himself as well. It startes off way too Lazor like. Way too many negative to three yard passes being thrown. I prefee we just run the ball on 1st if we are going to throw a pass across the line of scrimmage. A lot less things can go wrong and it at least sets up play-action. The WR screen has its purpose but on a 1st and 10 when the D is likely sitting back in base D isnt a very good time for it. After reading the articles about Gase putting a lot of thought into that 1st play of the game to come out and run the plays we did in that firsr series was lazy and boring. I hope this changes soon. If our offense is going to suck i hope it at least sucks while being aggressive. These 3 yard passes on 90% of our 3rd and longs have gotta go. If youll go for it on 4th down which it appears Gase will lean that way then it shouldnt be too much to ask for Gase to push Tannehill to be more aggressive and stop readily accepting the easy 3 yarder. Tannehill has got to start throwing guys open and anticipating on 3rd down and in the red zone. Guys arent going to be running wide open often in those situations. Hopefully we see more aggression this week with Parker back and that ****fest offensive performance out of the way Week 1.
Agreed. I believe this offense would be a lot more efficient if we targeted Landry less. He is a solid player and has been better than expected RAC but he is limited as well. He isnt a very good vertical wr but he can and should be used more in intermediate routes. I have always felt like Landry gets over-rated bt Fin fans. I think a lot has do with the lack of talent we have had but a part of it is Landry is easy to like. He is a fighter. Easy to root for but he isnt this #1 matchup nightmare some fans made him out to be. Use him like we did OJ McDuffie and he will be a key part of a great offense (hopefully). Just stop forcing the issue on 0 yard passes. Save the bubble screens for blitzing downs.
This was an issue since last year. We need more options. We treat Landry as a desperate/force at times. It is a bigger statement that the other receivers need to step up. Frankly no one has stepped up Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I know this is obvious but we need to stop the down and long to go. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think most are overreacting here. We have played one game so far, and it happened to be on the road against the league's #1 defense and in a place where teams like New England, Denver, Green Bay and Cinci have lost consistently for years now. Did Landry look good last week? No. But he wasn't supposed to. Gase called the most conservative game he could and it should have yielded enough points for a win. He also changed the game plan down the stretch and let Tannehill make the decisions...and admitted it to reporters on national TV. That tells me all I need to know about our offense, our coach and the direction they're heading. All I'm saying is don't panic....this ship is not sinking....and we will look better in New England this week. Just remember that this is probably the 2nd worst stadium to play in for entirely different reasons; like Belichek's intelligence and his scout's binoculars. We are not supposed to win these games or even be in the contest, so don't freak out in week 2. We're going to be okay and I really think we win this one.
I think the real answer isn't to stop doing any one particular thing but to start doing other things. A well-blocked WR screen is a valuable play that can stretch the defense and put the ball in the hands of a good player. It's completely nearly 100% of the time and relies on blocking, which the Dolphins (theoretically) should be pretty decent at. The problem isn't what the Dolphins are doing. The problem is what the Dolphins tend not to do.
I think the problem is they do not disguise it. Part of the success is that it is an element of surprise. This play is well-coached against and they are doing something when they line up that gives it off. They should add a wrinkle to try to pull it off. If they can control the ball and the line of scrimmage, there won't be a need for this play. This play is a necessity because of the opposing pass rush and the opposing stopping the run.
Ive always thought Landry was overrated but a solid player nonetheless. Im not sure hes even a solid player anymore. Im not sure he doesnt hurt this pathetic offense more than helps it. Those targets would be better utilized going to somebody who might accidentally make a play down the field. Not to mention the crybaby is a flag waiting to happen with his constant tough guy schtick. I may be overreacting because i expect Landry to fumble half the time trying to turn a 0 yard pass into a 1 yard pass. Sigh
We cannot execute this at all. Start off the second half and another blocking penalty Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Uh, if true, we shouldn't be throwing screens to him. But I disagree that he's not quick enough to play that role.
2/2 with Stills getting a holding penalty on a screen pass to Landry. I think maybe we need to put that one away next week and try something else. Lots of other plays worked today in the second half.
I agree. People sometimes don't realize that despite the attitude and competitive fire, Landry is covered well on a regular basis. He's a small guy that doesn't have elite speed. He's just never going to be a deep-threat burner. Sadly, he doesn't have the size to consistently win on the sideline either so most see him as a slot weapon. Despite the fact he's a fighter with great hands, he's not all that hard to tackle from a quickness/agility standpoint. I'd actually say that for every big play that comes of him fighting for yards you get a negative play where he's either wasting time moving east-west or actually turning it over like he did today. What seems to work are routes across the middle of the defense. Anytime you can get the ball between the numbers it's a good thing.
no one ever said he is an Alpha X. He is a rich man's Welker/Amendola/Edelman. Those guys don't catch man screens, they catch passes 2.1 seconds into the clock 7-8 yards down the field and use their toughness for YAC
Amendola yes. Similar WR. But Amendola is not the same as Edelman/Welker. Amendola works downfield. Welker was running option routes that require elite kind of agility breaking in/out. Edelman seems to have inherited that role. Landry doesn't have that which is why I agreed with the guy who disagreed with you. In general I do think Landry is misused so we agree on that aspect and I don't disagree with you using Amendola as an example. On a side note, Amendola gets open because you don't always know where it's going hence every NE route is respected. But at the same time, any D is going to worry about Edelman and Gronk 1st. In Miami, it's the opposite, the D is going to tighten around Landry knowing he's the first option and that the QB likes to feed him the ball. So this might be an issue of Miami needing to target him less and push the ball downfield more to Stills and Parker (which they appear to be doing). Lastly, I'm not sure I buy the YAC argument in all honesty. That might surprise some people and seem against the grain. But Landry isn't very big so if he can't outrun people he's not getting YAC as much as refusing to go down--two different things. Without great speed, it's hard to outrun people. The few times he does it are, well, offset by the times he's stood up and stripped like we saw today.
Exactly. If he had some speed or even better quickness, he'd be a threat. But unfortunately he's not. He chops his feet like he's trying to be quick but covers very little ground.
To me, our target hogs should be Parker, our RBs (sans Ajayi), and possibly Stills. I would throw Cameron into that mix because he's capable of causing mismatches, but he can't consistently catch the football. I like Jarvis. He has a place on this team. That place isn't seeing well over 150 targets though.
