Four Dolphins players opted not to stand for the national anthem. One local law-enforcement union has spoken out, loudly, on the topic. Via Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association has called for the suspension of escorts and other protective services for the Dolphins. The move comes in direct response to the decision of four players to kneel during the national anthem prior to last Sunday’s season-opening game at Seattle.

“I can not [sic] fathom why the Miami Dolphin organization and the NFL would allow the blatant disrespect of the American Flag and what it stands for during the national anthem,” wrote union president Jeff Bell. “It is a privilege to play in the NFL, not a given constitutional right. The Miami Dolphin players, staff and family members enjoy full police escorts from the Broward Sheriff’s Office on a regular basis. These escorts often involve putting the men and women of law enforcement agencies at risk as they block intersections during peak traffic times in order to expedite the travel time between facilities.”

The bulk of the letter makes it clear that the complaints from the union trace not to kneeling for the anthem but to the primary reason for the kneeling: Concerns about police brutality against African-Americans and people of color.
“We have buried coworkers who have unnecessarily lost their lives protecting the lives of individuals,” Bell writes. “Some law enforcement officers even lost their lives while protecting the lives of the very same individuals who were protesting against law enforcement. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association Local 6020 is seeking the immediate termination of all Miami Dolphin escorts until such time [as] the Miami Dolphins and the National Football League set forth a policy that will not tolerate the disrespect of the American Flag and National Anthem during any sanctioned games or events.”

Bell wants the Dolphins to mandate that the players stand for the anthem. But with no league rule requiring it and no term of the labor deal between the NFL and NFL Players Association permitting players to be disciplined for failing to stand, there’s nothing the Dolphins can do.

Meanwhile, it continues to be confounding that a clear and obvious middle ground between those who oppose police misconduct and those who oppose misconduct against police can’t be recognized and accepted. Any sane and reasonable person should oppose both, but in this red state/blue state, I’m-right-your-a-idiot reality of American discourse, even the most easily harmonized positions must be forced into polar opposites, with the concerns framed not as pro-common-sense and pro-justice-for-all but pro-police and anti-police, with no gray area between the extremes.

Me - good for them. If they want to crap on the police then they should try living without them for awhile.

The players should somehow find a way to not let Broward cops watch football. That'll show em back.

I'm pretty sure Ross could hire some much better private mercenaries to protect the team. They're like only 20 million used around the world protecting businesses.

I can't believe that stupid protest got their panties in a bunch...Bloody fascist crybabies.

Meanwhile, even the freakin' Aztecs, and I didn't even realize they were still around, joined a slew of other indigenous people to stop the prophecy of the "black snake" (oil pipeline). I am not ****ting you, there is an actual Indian prophecy that foretells of this. They aren't covering any of it in mainstream, but the crowds of protestors make it look like Woodstock. I even have a friend making the trip. Trippy is all I'm saying.

Idiots like this department make the protesters seem vindicated for protesting something that is mythical. Now if they were protesting police brutality vs the public in general? That would be a valid cause.

Even still, anyone should be able to protest...even idiots with a flawed agenda.

Cops are just offering their own "protest" of sorts. I suppose they don't appreciate being called racists. Very few people do.

Nobody is protesting good cops, I don't know why they can't parse through that. The fifth paragraph of the OP is mint, even though it's editorializing.

That is not a protest. That is a strike. Except it is more insidious than a strike because they are pretending to still be on the job. It is the protect and serve wing of law enforcement deciding not to protect and serve people of their choosing based on political beliefs.

That does NOT qualify as a protest.

Well, if they are doing this on official time, then I agree, it is deplorable. My understanding was that these cops are doing it for extra pay off duty.

No. Thomas said he would. Stills hadn't made up his mind. Foster's going to KFTC. I think Jelani said he was going to stand.

BTW, getting little attention, Grant said he could never do it because it seemed disrespectful to his family in the military, and the focus on a few cops should be put on all the killings in inner cities.

i don't recall you or I getting an escort through Miami because we needed to be at work.

if anyone of your players homes were being robbed and they were done protesting law enforcement long enough to call law enforcement to come help them, law enforcement would show up.

Stills should stand. I know most people on here will disagree with this but I thought it was a big mistake to do what those guys did last week on 9/11. That's going to haunt them for a while.

The problem is they want the league and/or the organization to make it against the rules to exercise freedom of speech.

The police union is being antiAmerican because their little ***** feelings are hurt.

There's no freedom of speech issue unless you find government action involved.

Frankly, I really wouldn't want a person to stand for the National Anthem only because he was compelled by his boss, though. They've made their feelings known - can't unring a bell.

If a police officer is protecting players on a daily basis and gets protested on national TV for police brutality, then they certainly have a right to be pissed off. But then again, it said more than that....it said Metro-Dade police have died protecting NFL players.

It's off duty side job work. Good for them. Anyone protesting during the national anthem is shameful to themselves, their teammates, the organization and us fans. Protest *insert your cause here* some other time rather than when we should ALL come together to honor our country.

It's not about their rights. No one is saying throw them in jail or have the government punish them. What we are saying is what they are doing is disrespectful. There is a place and time for everything. It's like them protesting at one of your family members funeral. Can they? Yes. Should they? Nope.. Show some class.. It's on the same level as Westboro Baptist Church protesting at a service members funeral.

There you go again. Nothing in that statement referred to police dying protecting NFL players. But it certainly was anti-1st Amendment all the way.

The police union wants the NFL/Dolphin organization to make it against the rules, meaning they think protesters should be punished if they do it.

    That's antiAmerican.

I guess I misunderstood what these protests were about, then. I apologize. I thought the players were protesting this nation because its an oppressively racist society where police are monsters who shoot defenseless black children for kicks. That's what comes across from the BLM protests. If I'm understanding correctly now, this isn't about saying this Nation is a racist-y racist place, rather, it's about police brutality in general.
