Thill did everything he was supposed to today. Anyone saying otherwise has a clear agenda and probably needs to reevaluate lots of things.

I acknowledge that there's no particular point to the rant above. It just feels like we knew what we needed after Tannehill's first and second year. We knew who we was and he's exactly the same. How the heck did we come to be an offense that went in the exact opposite direction of what we all wanted to see. Instead of taking pressure off of the QB, we seem to believe the opposite--that we can only win if the QB is the focal point.

I just don't want to talk about Tannehill anymore because I'm basically going to say the same thing I said 4 years ago- he's an average NFL quarterback that's only going to shine with a Super Bowl ready team that has all the other components in place.

HOWEVER, you have to look at today as a complete positive. Why?

    1) It was not Tannehill's fault we didn't take 3 points on 4th and inches. That alone wins the ballgame.

    2) It's not his fault that Stills dropped one of Tannehill's prettiest throws ever. That alone would also have won the ballgame.

    3) It's not his fault that our kicker whiffed on an easy field goal. That alone also wins the ballgame.

    4) It's not his fault that Gase decided to go run-heavy every time we got into the red zone. With better decisions from the sidelines, I think that alone also wins the ballgame.

    5) Tannehill's receivers dropped two other key passes, Stills in the end zone, Cameron for a 1st down. One would have won the ballgame, the other puts us in field goal range (which could also win the ballgame).

Now let's look at Tannehill's mistakes for the day-

    1) He was strip sacked...had no effect on the outcome since we got the ball back.

    2) He was sacked for a safety....had no effect on the outcome since it ultimately didn't count.

    3) He threw 4-5 bad passes; two on 3rd down that killed drives. One led to a Seattle field goal.

    4) He took two other sacks that (in my opinion) he should have been scrambling away from. Possibly changed the outcome.

    5) Tannehill stood in the pocket and got leveled several times; very few of those were caught. Possibly changed the outcome as well.

If we are grading ONLY Tannehill here, I think he had far more positives than negatives today. I'm trying to be objective though and sit dead-center on the fence- today he wasn't the problem. If we have to have someone to blame, then I think Stills, Franks and possibly even Gase ranks higher on the list...so I'm not sure what else there is to say. Tannehill is who he always is and he played a good (but not great) game.

getting back to the original post, I was very encouraged today. It sucked that we lost but we have to remember where we're coming from. We weren't a playoff team last year so to expect us to beat arguably the best roster in the NFL at their home while having our defense and offense still learning their fit in the new schemes is asking for a bit much if you ask me.

What really impressed me was the offseason acquisitions today. I have always said that the key to building a super bowl winner is to have two A+ offseasons within three years. We just had our first A+offseason I think. Mario Williams, Isa Abdul-Quddus, Arian Foster, Kiko Alonso all really stood out to me today and are big improvements on what we had before. I think Quddus and Reshad Jones are going to be one of the best safety tandems in the NFL this year. Other free agents played solid like Bushrod and Jones. Then we have our draft and Tunsil, Caroo and Howard all looked like they will be solid to great players in time and we all saw flashes from Drake, Grant and Doughty in preseaason. That is one hell of an offseason. Another one like that and we will be able to compete talent wise with the perennial playoff teams for the big dance

In terms of the game i liked our running backs but thought our run blocking sucked. I believe it will improve as the season progresses. The tackles still have to learn how to be guards. Give it to week 8. The pass blocking was fine overall considering who we were playing. I think Tannehill played average against the best secondary in the NFL but he had his moments. The pass to Stills, The potential game winning drive at the end of the game. I think both coaches realized early on this was going to be a field position game and called a cautious gameplan for both sides. I would like to see the Dolphins open it up a bit more as we play different opponents. Not a whole lot just a bit more aggressive with the 20 yd passes. As for the receivers it was good to see Stills and Cameron involved but overall I thought the receivers were having a hard time getting open. Considering they were going against the best secondary in the NFL maybe that's to be expected but I would like to see more from their routes next week. It seemed about half the pass plays nobody was open. I want to see that improve to about 66% of the time someone is open.

Defensively, I was very pleased with our defensive line which I had some concerns about. Our linebacking crew could be good by the end of the year. They still hhave to learn the new scheme but Alonso looks like he's the missing piece to a good though not great linebacking crew. It wont be the disaster that last year''s crew was. The secondary is promising. Quddus with reshad jones could be lethal. Maxwell played alright and Howard looks promising.

Overall I am pleased. The goal of each season is to get better and I think we have achieved that. We'll see how it plays out. And if we have another talent infusion next offseason like we got this one we should be a very dangerous team for the next five years

Although I dont agree wth your assessment of Tannehill's potential career I do agree pretty mmuch with everything you wrote about today's game both good and bad. I think we all have to remember it takes about eight weeks for players to get comfortable with new systems being put in so we wont really know how good or bad we are until about week 10 or so. Overall I was pleased but I do think there are fixable mistakes that were made on both sides of the ball, coaching included.

Every offseason I've gone on and on about how we need to get a freaking stud running back or use the one we developed (Lamar). Go look at the early careers of all these franchise QBs and you'll find a great running game behind them for a few seasons to take the load off as they developed. (Peyton, Brady, Cam, Rivers, Eli, Roethlisberger, Brees, Flacco, now Winston, Mariota). It's not complicated.

To me, this year we either need Tannehill to be really good or really bad. Continuing to hover around his usual performance is going to make our future planning quite difficult...and make this board a living hell at times.
    .........
Anyways, back to the point. Plenty of encouraging things today.
Very impressed with how the defense played despite a lack of talent in the back 7. IAQ and Reshad were great, and the other guys were mostly in position doing their jobs. The back 7 looked much better than last year despite arguably taking a step back in personnel. Kudos to Vance Joseph installing his stuff and rolling it out in that performance. Really good sign.

DLine dominated, as I thought they would. But Phillips looks like a different player and Mario was engaged like I haven't seen in some time. That unit will keep us in games we would otherwise lose.

Tannehill was his usual self: not bad, not great. Expecting to see vast improvements in game 1 in a new system IN Seattle is, uh...a lot to ask. He struggled on 3rd down like most QBs do in that stadium; their back 7 flies around and sticks to guys, they're terrific. And even then that 4th Q drive was one of the best of Tannehill's career.

Agreed. Thought team in a tough place to play. Tanny has yet a new offense to learn. Not surprised by what we saw today. I've waited 10+ years for the Dolphins to be competitive. Today was a step in the right direction. I have faith.

This loss was certainly not on Tanne. I thought he played well. The f'ing drops killed him and the team today. Not just the Stills drop, but Cameron dropped, at least, one as well. He's been a major bummer so far this year. TE is an area where the team is certainly lacking big time.

So, in summation, my thoughts right now are: "F me in the F hole!!!!".

Ah, and completely forgot - one more reason I'm happy, we played that game with ROOKIE centre. A rookie centre. Just once more, a ROOKIE centre.
The OL has been horrible for too long. To see the possibility that we've actually gained some quality depth for our OL is amazing news. Plus, he's not some veteran cast-off or expensive trade. He's a rookie.

    More of that please!

I agree completely. There is no virtue in "close" losses. I found the play-callling to be unimaginative, and I found the Oline to not be up to par. I think Branden Albert is a liability. Kenny Stills, being that the deep pass us such a limited part of our offense, has to go away. He has to. He offers nothing but the deep route, and if he can't convert those chances, he is of no value to us.

I thought the Dline played okay, LBs Okay. Landry OK. Tunsil screwed up on the FG, but overall I thought he was ok. I didn't think anybody played well. And in the end, a loss is a loss is a loss. Its just what it is.

My One Line for Improvement would be: Get rid of Stills and get Grant involved in the "First down" offense. My long term impression would be: Tannehill will be judged by wins and losses this year. Not stats, not ratings. If we dont win more than we lose, we are in the market for a QB. JMHO.

EDIT: The Safeties....they played well. Both Jones and Abdul Quddus.

I do agree with this...and I think you hit on the ONLY thing "good" about the loss...It was to an NFC Team. Thats better than losing to an AFC team. Our AFC schedule starts this week. We have the chance to get on track.

I can't/won't allow "I'm new" to be an excuse. He will be judged just like Philbin or Sparao, as far as I am concerned. We need to see major improvements in week 2. That is what I would expect from any other coach from any other team in any other season. Losing isn't tolerable for long. The good news...you have another game Sunday. Make the necessary changes and go win the football game. Its what I love about sports...success is clearly defined.

I expect the Dolphins to win. I esp expect them to win when they have a lead late in the fourth quarter and the other team must score a TD to win. I can't say the defense was outstanding...not in giving up the game winning TD.

I won't make excuses or justify losing. But there is good news...they play again Sunday. Win Sunday, and all will be well, until the next week, when they will be asked to win again.

We had a chance to beat them, but we didn't beat them. As for last year, and the expectations...they were what they were...and we fired two HC and Four coordinators last year.

The best news for Tannehill is we play again Sunday so he can erase this horrible game from memory. It wasn't a good game for him. If he wants to be around next year, we have to start winning. The NFL is about winning. Its very simple. Get ready for NE. It'll be a great opportunity.

I mostly agree, though I don't get caught up in stats and other situation minutia. A good QB, one that stays around for a long time, is one that leads us to victory. Nothing else about Tannehill even interests me. I don't care how/when he runs, I dont' care how strong/weak his arm is. I don't care how long he's been here or when he was drafted. If he is going to be thought of as a good QB, he will be so because the team played well enough for him to win. Is it fair? Probably not. Archie Manning is never listed with "great" QBs, because his teams lost. Stabler is in the HOF. How in the hell is that fair? It is what it is. Just Win. Thats all.

Great post. We will see on Sunday if this team is one that learns, regoups, refocuses, and wins, or if this is team is like every team since 2001 and hands the Patriots the division.

I don't have an agenda...and I could not disagree more. The QB is expected to win the game. The announcers were saying "its Wilson time"...meaning, time to go win the game. Is there even such a thing as Tannehill time? They've been in the league the same amount of time.

And "agendas" can work both ways. You can have an agenda PRO or CON. I can assure you, I don't have either. I just expect them to win. The QB being "responsible" for winning or losing comes with the territory of being a starter.

*Realistic* or not the Dolphins had every chance to win that game and like typical Dolphin teams we find ways to lose. Meanwhile somehow the ****ing Pats win.. Again.

I'm not happy. Not much about this team makes me happy from the top down. I don't agree with their personnel philosophy or their drafting strategy and I haven't since the late 90s.

Yes, Tannehill time is when the game is on the line and it's time to hold onto the ball too long and take a sack.

Is it unreasonable to think that when our defense has held the other team to no TDs the whole game, that we can do it one more time with the game on the line?
Is it unreasonable to think that when our defense holds the other team to 12 points that we can outscore them?

Nobody wins there. We outplayed them.

We play with that intensity and focus all year and it'll be a fun season here.

A lot less of a joke then we were under Philbin, already, IMO.
