Every year we get the same thing. Start with another teams reject QB (got 2 this year) one with history of injury the other a history of inconsistency. Some things look great in the practice reports but then reality sets in and preseason comes around and we see the WR's drop balls, way too many penalties, and a defense that can't get off the field on third down, etc etc.

Its just the same ole same ole......or is it?

I think not. Why? Because I believe in this staff and what they have done and continue to do. This was the first preseason game, and while some things did not go well, some things did. But its the staff we have now that I have confidence in to address these concerns.

This staff has made solid moves from the beginning. From the first move, which some would say was Bill Parcells retention of Ricky Williams (who looked pretty good last night I see). To some that were not popular (Zach, the JT situation) but were probably necessary for our future. They decided who they wanted with the most important draft pick a team could have, made it, got him signed and in camp. From all accounts he had a very solid showing in his first live action.
The draft, IMO, addressed the most glaring needs the team had, to play the kind of football we will try to play. No they didn't address all the areas, but we had too many. I am really warming up to the Henne pick, not that I was against it. I am on record as being a Beck supporter and I still am, but, Henne really seems like a very very good pick. The trade with Dallas, on draft day, may have been one of the best deals this organization has pulled off in a while.

The off season training program has been what a good football team needs. Hard work in the weight and film rooms and individual instruction to many of the players. They have injected an attitude of accountability and competition. They have stated, and demonstrated, a commitment to improving the roster from the bottom to the top, looking at players, evaluating players, letting go and bringing in players they think will make this a better football team and I have confidence they will continue to do so. The trade for Pennington, IMO, instantly upgraded our QB position. I also believe CP will be a huge benefit for Beck/Henne and their maturation process. How this affects Beck/McCown is another question. But I have confidence they will make the right one for the Dolphins.

With the staff we have now, I have every confidence that the things that concerned us coming out of the first preseason game will not be glossed over with an anecdote, or media sound bite. No, they will be stressed as shortcomings and steps will be made to correct them. Whether it be changes with instruction at practices, changes in the depth charts, or changes in the roster with cuts and additions. These things will get corrected. Thats what preseason is for and thats what the coaches will do.

Man its great football season is back.

Everything has to be evaluated in context.

Fact: We are a bad football team this year.

Fact: We didn't get bad in one season, its not going to take one season to get us out of it.

We started regressing under Dave Wannstedt and neither of the other two coaches we had reversed the slide.

I think we finally have a regime in place that will get us the talent and the coaches who will get them prepared.

Long, Merling, Henne, Langford, and Thomas from this draft are all going to either start or be major contributors. Murphy will be primary backup.

We have three picks in the first two rounds next year and alot of salary cap room.

Better times are ahead for Miami Dolphins football...and its been a long time coming.

the team's motto should be "get off the field on 3rd down".

    Nice write up!

The one thing that stands out for me is the change in attitude and direction, we will not try to reinvent the wheel, we will not make boneheaded trades, we will trade smartly, and achieve positive results for this team.

We have two great running backs, we took a Left Tackle #1 overall, and we drafted players who fit the system, and we have made smart trades for ready to start players.

I don't miss the nuanced discussions about the Coryell Offense, I don't miss Little Nicky's sulleness, I want to see a aggressive football team and finally we have a "no gimmick" type of Organization.

There will be no "magic" scheme that makes everything better, we will have to get better the hard way, one off tackle dive at a time until our opponents get sick of the sight of them...

the dolphins will be a middle of the pack team this year. they really had no business going 1-15 last year and it has been over-blown how bad they were. the biggest problem with the team last year was the coaching staff. the team had bad conditioning and was undisciplined and it cost them many games. even with all that, they managed to be competitive in most games, losing 6 by 3 points or less. the lack of player conditioning also caused the rash of injuries we saw, especially on defense.

you will see a major attitude change in the team this year. they will have a backbone again and the running game will be punching motherf@ckers in the mouth all year. like with most teams, the hopes are pinned on the defense. can we stop the run and stop giving up big plays down field?

As someone posted, "Parcells gave the Dolphins their balls back."

I haven't written it, but the Dolphins finally have something solid at QB. They have both Beck & Henne to develop while Pennington tries to keep the team competitive. The offensive line will be much improved now that after soooooo many years of neglect it was finally addressed in the right way, through the draft. The defensive line got younger with Jason Ferguson, an improvement over the aged Keith Traylor. Jason Allen seems to be developing into a competent starter @ SS (FS?).

There are alot of things, positive things, that happened during this off-season to improve the team. I see from six to eight wins next season. I believe we'll look alot like the Buffalo Bills from last season that went 7-9. After the vomit of 1-15, I'll take it.

If next off-season they find stars at OLB, CB & WR, while getting depth elsewhere (especially OT), then this team will start challenging for wild-card/division title.

FS, although he can switch in between to a degree due his physical nature although I think his instincts are still behind Bell's. We'll have to see how more playing time brings him along if at all.

Just curious about how you or the other poster came to this conclusion. Based on the reports coming out of TC, I might say the same thing about Favre bringing a big pair back to the QB position, but how can you really tell until game time?

Parcels definitely brings an aura of respectability with him wherever he goes, but again, he's involved in a different capacity then he usually is. Are Phin fans expecting the same kind of trade mark turnaround that Parcels is famous for when he's been the coach in his previous jobs? In the same time frame as well?

Yes, I wholeheartedly expect the same type of turnaround. Bill may not be the coach, but he is not your run of the mill President of Football operations. No, he will be very hands on in the running and coaching of this team. Our front office is a TEAM OF INDIVIDUALS WORKING TOGETHER FOR A COMMON GOAL. Just like they want the players to be. I have confidence this thing gets turned around quickly. Yeah it took 5 years for it to get this bad but, IMO, it will only take about half that time to get it turned around.
