You guys want something positive to cheer you up? Watch this…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=659QOc-cWWc

I just so happened to stumble on those highlights from Tannehill’s 2012 game vs Seattle. How many of you have seen this video and how long’s it been since you saw it? My first reaction was, ‘damn, I can’t remember ever seeing Ryan look
    that in command!’

I have to say…we’ve sat here over the last couple years discussing Ryan’s need to climb the pocket, push the ball downfield, escape and scramble, blah, blah, blah…but dude, WTF, here he is killing it in all those areas as a freakin’ rookie! Oh, and the icing on the cake is his clutch drive at the end in a high-pressure situation which results in the team taking the lead and winning as the clock expires. That kind of game is what sell tickets, lol.

Does Ryan look unnatural and robotic? Not at all.
Does he look comfortable as a pocket passer? Heck yeah he does!
Are his linemen doing an ample job? Yep, they sure are.
Does he look like someone who can’t scramble? Shoot no, he’s gouging them! DJ, look at this!

Jesus, dude…how bad did Philbin and Lazor screw the pooch with this kid!?

Even though passer rating is meant to view long-term efficiency, it’s worth noting I guess that Ryan posted a 97.1 rating in that game with 9.7 YPA, 69% completions and 33 extra yards scrambling. So don’t think those “highlights” offset a bunch of lowlights. Ryan was as great in that game as those highlights would have you believe. He simply kicked ***. This had to be the signature game of his rookie campaign.

Just for fun, here are 3 things to think about:

    (1) If that long play (at 1:17) to a wide-open Davone Bess had gone for a TD which it’s fair to say probably should have, Ryan’s rating would have shot up to 113.1 in this game, which is good enough to be in Ryan’s top-10. This would’ve been the 15
th time (in 48 games) that he went over 100. I’m going to look into how that compares with other QBs.

    (2) According to PFF, Ryan posted a sack % of 6.7 during his rookie year, which ranked 20
th in the league. Not only is that better than every year since but the more balanced run/pass ratio resulted in “only” 35 total sacks. While that’s not low per se, it is 10-20 fewer sacks than in the years since.

    (3) In 2012, Miami had a balanced offense that threw the ball 53% of the time. In the year’s since, that’s risen to 62% passing as Miami’s replaced some of their running with short passing. Recall that Adam Gase just last year took Cutler—who was passing at 63%--down to 53%. That’s just a little bit of (probably meaningless) symmetry.

The sad thing is, If Ryan played like that against Seattle this year, we’d call him a franchise QB and brag about how awesome he is and how evolved he looks.

In the long run, it's definitely about consistency, I know. The real question has always been, why can't he look like this every week? That's a fair knock I suppose, but damn, it sure is fun to watch those highlights. That one game encompasses pretty much everything we're looking to see out of Tannehill this year.

Its amazing what can happen to a passing offense when you run the ball.

Yeah that Seattle game is still for me the best game for Tannehill in terms of showing he can repeatedly lead the team from behind to win, especially as the game winds down.

But it doesn't cheer me up because those types of games are too far and few between as you point out Greg. Would cheer me up a lot more if I saw him play that way against Seattle this year in the opener!

Not true, when we run the ball or have albert, pouncey & james playing his record and ratings are good.

Tannehill rarely plays like he did against Seattle even when we run the ball well or has good protection. It's not the ratings I'm talking about. It's the clutch performance in that Seattle game that is so rarely demonstrated by him.

Crazy side note to that game....

Davone Bess of all people, had 129 yards on just 7 receptions. How much of that was YAC?

    Only 35 yards.

    Oh, c'mon! :)

Nah, I agree, but it's never made 1 bit of sense to me that Ryan can look this good and then go cold for 3 weeks. There's GOT to be some reason for that.

If he had 1 drive here and there, I'd say it's just luck but there are entire games where he looks great and comes off as very instinctive and natural. If you can post 4 great games a year then (to me) it's not good fortune or luck. If you're regularly doing it, then the possibility seems like it's there. I don't see why you can't improve the consistency. There's got to be a way Gase can get this out of him more often.

More than anything, I don't remember ANY games like that during the Lazor era. Certain stats improved marginally under Lazor, but you feel like you lost potential for greatness in the process. If Tannehill's capable of going back to a more instinctive style, this year could show big growth I think.

Aw man, you remember that "letter" written by the Seahawks fan criticizing Cam Newton for celebrating and talking up Russell Wilson for helping disabled kids?

GTFOH. Seahawks fans are SO easy to hate, lol. They have a very NE-fan quality about them.

I posted this in that one thread I just linked to, but since it's still relevant, I'll post it here again:

Seems like in his first couple of years in the league he was less technical, but played better unscripted football. It's like he depended more on his athletic abilities, both running and passing. Now it looks like he took a complete 180 turn under Joe Philbin and makes less overall mistakes, but tends to not play well when things go wrong and when he needs to make a play himself. I'm hoping Gase can revert him back to some of his natural tendencies, while still keeping mistakes to a mininum. If/when that happens, we'll have a heck of a QB, IMO.

Looks like a totally different QB. Even first play where he actually steps up in the pocket to make the throw.

That is just false. Tannehill almost always plays well when he gets protection. Tje fact you can probably count the games in his career where he had good protection on two hands is why he has taken the flak he has. If the line this year gives him protection he will be in the top ten in stats

I'm not talking about "playing well". I'm talking about clutch performance, as in playing well when the game is on the line. And he's sorely lacking in that department even when he might otherwise play well during other parts of the game, including when he has a good running game and good OL.

Really.. few people in the NFL are thinking "Tannehill" when they think of a QB you'd rely on to win a game where you're trailing by a one-score differential late in the 4th quarter. But he did precisely that multiple times in that 2012 Seattle game.

    ANYWAYS.

This game is a perfect example of how a QB can go from promising to ruined with constant pressure and disfunction around him.

To this point Ryan reminds me so much of Tim Couch in regards to having a ton of ability but not having the proper environment to flourish...not all QBs NEED that. Ryan does.

Do your magic Gase and give us a reason to be excited for once.
