I think it was a money issue judging how much he got paid in Oakland. He was the king of doing nothing when he was here so, I dont know how well it would have worked.

I thought it was a mistake to let Sean Smith go. IMO he was overly criticized by the fans.

 

A agree, plus they had him playing in a zone when he was clearly a press guy.

 

I don't know. He certainly was green in some areas. He clearly didn't have good body control while he was here. Stuff hips. Poor tackler. Whiffed on tackles. No make up speed when beat. I liked his potential, but Vontae was by far the overall better corner.

 

Vontae was certainly flashier, but his missed tackle percentage was higher than Smith's. And at the time he was even more raw. If you recall Vontae wasn't even a starter when he was traded. At the time he was basically the knucklehead who may or may not ever figure things out. And at the time we lacked a coach who was likely to reach him. He got it together in Indy, but may have never had the chance here. Smith was less of a headcase and a better fit. The bigger CB is almost never going to look as athletic, but length can't be taught. Smith was a guy that could have fit in that regime and with this one.

 

Hard to think at one point Smith and Davis were our starting CBs, and both turn out to be good'ns. Ireland's major fault was, he had a half decent eye for talent, but then would get rid of any good talent he acquired.

His eye was usually on the defensive side though.

 

Would you mind putting a side-by-side comparison of the two regarding this "missed tackle" stat? And what constitutes as a tackle missed per the site from where you got this? Just curious.

You say Vontae was rawer? Smith only played a couple of years of college corner and initially went in as a wideout. Smith's tag was exactly that: raw. Davis was a much more polished corner coming out.

I liked his potential, but the guy just wasn't what his asking price was when he was here. I don't remember too many being that upset when he left for that contract. Now if he would've played in Miami like he did in KC, I would have really liked to have kept him. But he just didn't have it all while here.

If I was as smart as Galant and knew how to post tweets I would post one of Doughty making a nice pass down the middle.

 

I was ok with letting him go..looks like ice had their fill..I thought his weaknesses were to much of a liability for a defense and did not like his lack of propensity for getting his nose dirty.

I don't have the stats anymore. I can't recall if it was PFF or some other site. But it was often cited at the time as one of those common misconceptions. Everybody thought that VD was this great tackler b/c he made some big hits, but he also whiffed more often than Smith. And I disagree about Smith not being worth the price. When he hit FA everybody knew he was going to get a big contract. That was his market value. And everybody knew he still had the potential to get better. The people who weren't upset at his leaving just made a poor evaluation.
