Coach Adam Gase has installed a period for quarterback where he will take a shotgun snap, drop two steps, chop step to the right, chop step to the left, forward, backward and then throw the ball. A complementary drill has the QB dropping and moving around in what would be the pass pocket with several people around him swiping at the football in his hands. "One, we're trying to create great habits for pocket presence," Gase said. "You try to make things as chaotic as possible so that during the game, it's just normal for them. So you're trying to create chaos as much as possible to make sure they feel that's how it could be in the game and they know how to handle it." And I ask, what has been one of the significant critiques of Ryan Tannehill in the past? Pocket presence. He hasn't often shown great instincts in the pocket. He hasn't often seemed to have that innate sense that trouble is coming and what to do about it, where to slide, where to throw, when to throw. Gase has been working this drill with his QBs for years. I've never seen this drill in Miami the past four years. If it addresses the issue that it is intended to -- ostensibly, improving Tannehill's pocket presence, this otherwise short drill could pay big dividends in 2016 and beyond."
I would create a virtual reality pocket and attach electrodes to his testicles for every time he got sacked(lol). If that doesn't work I would involve an octagon with monkeys.
The article is a little misleading IMO... this is a normal drill that Gase runs for all his QBs regardless of where he's been. Armando is portraying this drill as though it's singular to Tannehill. All the QB's will be doing this drill. Nice that Gase is actually interested in developing his QB's though, instead of simply having them execute a scripted play and development be damned.
As per usual in regards to everything I hear about gase tho, it's groundbreaking because we're not used to our coach actively attempting to improve his players. It's a crazy concept, but it might just work.
What's the beef? He writes in the article: Where does Armando say it is specific to Tanny? He writes that this drill specifically addresses something Tanny is criticized for, and points out that he hasn't seen that drill here under Philbin.
To me pocket presence is making that move before the rush collapses. But it goes a step earlier, as he needs to pre-snap the pressure, and then while in the pocket, step in, roll out, or get rid of the ball.......just not stand in there and take the sack.
I like Gase already. Tanny needs to stop being a punching bag in the pocket when pressure is on its way. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Too many times RT17 has seen the pressure and just dropped to the ground for an easy sack. This can't hurt and may even help. I hope so.
