1.) Yes very disapoointing they won't get the most out of Ginn's speed now and I expect a lot of screen passes and slant routes. With his speed he should still be able to make some big plays.

2.) I don't think Beck will do much in the league anyways but I'm sure he will get a chance this season unless Miami is in the playoff race until the end.

No, I'd like to see what Beck has to offer and if he can't cut it then let the veteran backup finish the season and Henne can get his shot next year.

It's not about keeping vets off the team just for the sake of rebuilding, I was all for bringing Penny in in the beginning of the offseason when it looked like he would be released. But then I read his quotes in the NY papers about how he didn't want to be a backup and I turned my attention to McCown.

I hate to see this team throw away draft picks, we've done it too many times and we've payed for it by finally being so bad that we were 1-15 last year. In my mind, bring Penny in is tossing Beck off to the side and wasting a very valuable 2nd rounder. True Parcells doesn't owe anything to Beck, but he owes it to the team not to waste draft picks and assets.

As it stands right now, I guess I'm okay with this move. That said, if Beck is traded/released I'm fairly certain that I'm going to be going nuts along with everyone else. On the bright side everyone says that Chad is an intelligent guy, so maybe the FO feels he's a better mentor for Beck and Henne, in addition to being a better fit than McCown.

I really do understand what you are saying man, however I have to believe that Bill and the FO have the ability to scout talent and know who has 'it' and who doesn't. They have obviously given all three QB's a good look over (and will continue to do so) but to me it speaks volumes that they had to go out into FA and grab yet another guy to throw into the mix because they weren't satisfied with what they currently had on the roster. Henne is obviously a rook who is learning and being groomed into 'the guy'. However, in regards to Beck. from what I've read/seen I just don't think he's progressing fast enough, and as you said, he wasn't this regime's pick so really what do they owe him. If he's not performing up to certain expectations then what ties does this regime have to him to make them want to keep him around.

I guess the thing that bothers me is A) the article that was posted today, and B) the fact that Penny was handed the job by all reports.

Because proper player evaluation take longer than a couple of game and part of a preseason. Some QB's don't develop until their 2nd and 3rd year and we are giving up on Beck well before that. Parcells doesn't owe anything to Beck personally, but he owes it to the team to make sure he knows what he has before he tosses them off to the side. IF he gives up on Beck before seeing what he can do then it's a wasted draft pick IMO. :wink2:

I just don't think the whole team should have to suffer because of Beck, especially if management doesn't see the development needed in his game to successfully lead this team on the field. Is it to early to tell, who knows, but I'm sure the FO have a much better idea then we do. All I'm saying is that when you hear Beck's name the words interception or fumble usually follow. Now we all know Pennington doesn't have the strongest arm but he is for the most part accurate, and more importantly consistant. Even as a team rebuilding we need that consistancy to learn and grow from, and hell even for morale, especially with the younger guys.

I really believe that Chad will be very succssful in our offense. Even though he can't throw the long ball, he is one of the most accurate QB's in the NFL. This year should be very interesting!

I don't think you can plan to that extent in the NFL. After all, if Pennington gets through the next two years without getting hurt it'll be the first time in his career! So I don't agree that this means Beck rides the pine for the next two years. On the other hand, if a miracle happens and Pennington stays healthy, then he can keep the job for a while. He is a good quarterback. The real loser here is McCown -- he's out of a job, it looks like.

Don't overanalyze this. I doubt Parcells did. I think he said to himself, "I want one veteran QB on this team, and Pennington is better than McCown."

It isnt chad penningtons fault that he was drafted by the jets, hes the kind of man that will go to battle with the team that hes on, bill parcells drafted him so am sure as a man with his type of character he feels loyalty to that man and not to a uniform.

Put it this way, if u were in his shoes and the jets drafted you woud'nt you give ur heart and soul to that team?.

It has no bearing on his personality, and to me its quite funny to think that some of you are bitter because we signed him...get over it and put urself in his shoes before you critisize the man.

i can't believe there is this many people on this board crying about chad pennington.

he's a serious upgrade to what we have now, we gave up NO draft picks to get him, and we're paying him less than the average salary for starting QBs in the league.

    what's the problem?

    From what I've heard....

Noodle arm, he's a Jet, he doesn't throw deep, and he gets hurt too easy.

    My question is.....

Is that better or worse then what we already have? The answer I've heard is, well we're only going to win 3 games anyway, with Penn maybe we win 5, big deal right?

To me, yes. They play to win. I'd rather have my boys win 5 then 3.

    Bottom line

Ahh...he was a jet, and not some minor Jet, a jet who used to beat us time after time after time, this is sort of like signing Fabian to fight for the Persians..

Most people here, myself included, wanted to see the guy knocked out of games...and now here he is....in a Phins Uni.....

There is a whole lot of emotional conflict going on right now..perhaps an affirmation of DolphinFanhood would help?

I just want the Dolphins to win.

Okay I understand that Pennington has a weak arm which he does but playing 8 games a year in Miami is going to be better then playing 8 games a year in New York. So I don't think his arm strength will be as big of a problem here. Plus as like2god pointed out teams will stop fearing the long ball and try to stop the run; well that will happen but how many times has the Fins done that to the Jets with Pennington starting just for him to lob up a bomb down the field. Actually if teams play the Fins that way it could actually open up the offense. I also disagree for this not meaning the team is in rebuilding mode. Teams may say they are in rebuilding mode but the fact is they know that they must win now. The coaching staff knows they can be fired and the organization knows that they can lose money and high profile FAs which they don't want. Saying that a team is in rebuilding mode is just a way of telling the fans yeah your team is probably going to suck this year so accept it now and don't complain to us. Winning now is always a priority.

Now I agree that yes Pennington may hamper the development of our young QBs by them not getting on the field. However the more I think about it the more I think it could help them such as the Kitna/Palmer situation in Cincinnati where Henne/Beck can learn from Pennington. The key to this is Bill Parcells who like dolphindebby I distrust. If he pulls another Bledsoe/Romo situation I will be pissed.

The more I think about the situation the more I like Pennington (as some of you may have noticed as my posts have been shifting pro-Pennington). So I am truly moving into the Pennington acceptance group in that form. Also I think that because we are fans (rabid ones at that) that over time we may lose our rational feelings because we want to win so badly and want a QB to succeed and I fear I may be doing just that. I don't think so though but I also bought into Daunte Culpepper and Trent Green. Anymore I'm weary over the QB situation but if Pennington grooms our young QBs properly I'll be thrilled (by properly I mean that Parcells doesn't let this get to a Bledsoe/Romo situation).

I also don't get liking Pennington because he was a Jet. I mean he is a Fin now who cares what he was before. Would any of you not take Gisele Bunchem after Tom Brady left her....I doubt it.

i can understand that sentiment i guess, but i'm a DOLPHINS fan. not a AFCE other team hater. i loathe the other teams, but i love my team. if my team lands a guy who will improve the team, i'm going to embrace said guy.

Hmm..perhaps they need some more Affirmations?

"Chad Pennington is good enough, smart enough, and darn it, Dolphins fans are going to like him?"

What I find funny, there is alot of Phins fans who look at Pennington like the worthless guy who married their daughter....

    I agree 100%.

I'm VERY conflicted about this signing. Yes, we're a better team with this signing...but he his a JET. I hate the jets.

On a side note, I'm not loyal to Beck or Henne. I just want one of them to emerge as a strong starter for next year. This year, Pennington will be the QB and he'll prove steady leadership without a lot of mistakes.

We sucked last year. Its gonna take a while to be good again. I'm willing to be patient.

    NEVER.....

I'll root for the team but I'll grimmace every time I see him on the field in a Phins helmet.

Here's to one of the young'uns in 09 stepping up and making the Pennington era 1 year.

I copied this from the Football Outsiders message board:

"Pennington is tremendous at play action, exceedingly smart, and the most accurate passer in NFL history.
His weakness is misunderstood. It’s is NOT a “weak arm”. He hit some very nice long passes last year, though his arm isn’t the strongest (and if you want “strong arm” a hundred guys from Leftwich to Leaf are still out there availalble).
Pennington’s REAL weakness is that after two surgeries his arm gets tired after more than 30 throws. If you look at his splits, for his first 25 passes per game last year is rating was in the 90s, near the top of the league. But on attempts over 35 his rating was like 50."

Any Jets fans around? Does that sound right to you?

Chad Pennington can become a hero to the Phins just by beating the Jets and Favre in the home opener.

I just hope he can learn the playbook in time and fit in here.

    here's my thing with Pennington...

He was the leader of the team I hate more than anyone, which made him the player I hated the most. However, I never could deny the fact that Chad has a ton of heart. He doesn't have the greatest talent but he makes up for it with endless effort. He's a competitor. When word first broke last week that we had interest in bringing him in I didn't feel too good about it for reasons I stated earlier...he was the friggin' Jets QB for what? 7-8 years? We could never beat him and I always felt he was overrated. Now I don't think he is a great QB...but in no way is he a bad QB. But he's smart and wins games. I'm actually kind of surprised how quickly I was able to come around to accepting him. And I think the way the Jets fans bashed him after we signed him was a big help. I know how badly Chad wants to prove the Jets and their fans wrong, though he's too classy to say it, I know he feels it. And if it were to happen right off the bat on September 7th I would be ecstatic. So I guess what I'm saying is welcome to the Miami Dolphins Chad, now that you're no longer a Jet, you're fine by me. Now let's go win some games!
