I don't know what camp coverage you've been reading, but Beck had a bad start to camp and has really come on in the last 5 or so days. There is no clear front runner and noone has done so poorly that they are behind.
My point is that if they have Favre, and kicked CP to the curb to get him, and he comes here and starts and we beat them, that would be as bad as it could possibly get for a Jets fan.
Quite frankly, it sounds as if your boys are a bunch of anti-Beck homers, IMO. We are a rebuilding team. Whether or not you're a fan of Beck, it would be stupid for us to carry two veteran QB's and only one young QB. That would be putting are eggs in one basket. And after the way John Beck was performing this week, releasing him would be extra stupid.
Beating them w/ CP and with them having Favre would go along way to makeup for the annoying existence that is any NYJ Fan with their bad attitudes and horrible accents.
For the record, I live "down here" and have no idea where his "friends" heard he was going to be released by the end of camp. I hate when people spout nonsense and act as though it came from a legitimate source.
Another thing to consider...if we cut McCown, I think there is an even chance that he stays cut and doesn't sign with another team. Then if CP, or one of our other QBs get hurt, then we can always bring him back.
I've been reading all of them. The Herald, the sentinal & the Palm beach blogs. I always catch Rosenhaus on Sunday nights as well. Those 4 sources all seem to be describing the same situation. I've got to admit it seems like there must be some other blogs that most of the guys around here have been reading because I didn't think he was doing all that well.
I hope no one is brought in, if Beck cant make it as our starter i think he would do fine as a career backup
Im not accusing anyone of anything. Just speaking in general terms I still would like to know the source of these claims though.
Brother 124, Beck is here to stay. I think he will do just fine in our first pre-season game. don't think Bill, Jeff, and Tony are ready to give up on him yet. I am not giving up on him either. Keep the faith!
i don't think there is anything left to be said that hasn't been said already guys. a lot of repeat information in here.....
In 124's case, there was an article posted in the Club Level that had Omar saying that Beck is "bracing himself to be the odd man out". I'm not sure if that's the source his friends were referring to. As for the original topic, I simply don't understand why you would cut him. Beck has progressed over the last few days. He's still a young player that was drafted high last year by a different regime. Yes, it was a different regime but was liked a lot by Ireland in Dallas. To add to him being liked by Ireland, he fits the criteria of a 'Parcells QB' that is constantly brought up by media. He is one pound lighter and one inch shorter than the average starting Quarterback on a Parcells-coached team. I know Sparano is our head coach but that theory is constantly brought up and its getting annoying. Why not cut McCown instead? He has regressed aside from today where he executed 12 scripted plays. There would be no reason to keep two veterans on this team and cut a young player. You know what you have in those two veterans, you know they won't be the possible franchise QB's for your team, you don't know that in Beck. Don't cut Beck, that would be a foolish move. EDIT: Just to add to the above, Sparano stated that the coaching staff wants Beck to win this job. I don't know how much belief some have in a coaches comments but I just wanted to point that out.
Haha, yeah he's not the best but maybe 124's friends listen to him. We all have our opinions on Omar.
Omar has said Beck could be the odd man out tomorrow for the game, since Sparano has hinted that they might not even use 3 qbs tomorrow. Credibility notwithstanding, is this maybe the source for 124's friends comments?
Probably, a lot of general knowledge football fans read the paper and believe whatever is written on there comes from the team directly... When really it's as credible as you or me writing it.
One performance does not save McCown and yes if they were to carry for example one less LB relying on the fact that Roth can lineup there if need be or Vonnie Holliday per say then I could see it happening.
I don't know who your friends are in Florida, but not one report, comment or post has ever suggested that Beck will be cut...that's not to say he wouldn't be, provided they sign Chad and keep McCown, but what would be the motivation to keep McCown if they have Pennington here ?? CP is a better QB, more proven, knows the system, and his positives outweigh his and McCowns' negatives at this point...With Beck they really don't know what they have just yet...he may be a legit QB in this league or may not be, but with McCown, they know they have a journeyman backup at best...With Chad, provided he can stay healthy, they know what they have...a guy who has successfully started in this league and can carry the torch until Beck/Henne develop who they know very well...JMO, but I can't see the logic in cutting Beck other than cash...the cap hit for cutting Beck is much less (about $2M less using Clumpy's page) than cutting McCown...
Tell that to the Chargers, who saw Drew Brees under-perform for three seasons before finally breaking through. Yes, they did draft a replacement after a horrid third season, but they didn't cut him during training camp in just his second season.
It wasn't reported. For pete's sake! Omar is guessing Beck won't play. KFFL is reporting what Omar is guessing! Jeez can it stop now, please. Someone make it stop! (not you TheAnswer, but I can see this thing blowing up because of Omar's speculation).
In all honesty, right now, I think anything is possible. I think its more likely that IF we bring in pennington because the FO thinks neither Beck or Henne are ready to be the QB of this team then McCown is the odd guy out, theres more upside to keeping Beck and Henne here due to their ages than there is to keeping McCown here. Whether its trade value or talentwise
Jim "Mad Dog" Mandich was interviewing Kim Boakemper on WQAM just now. He said" Chad Pennington throws the football like a 12 year old girl." Kim aggred with Mandich. We don't need noodlearm. So no need to cut Beck or McCown
That may be true, but Pennington is among the smartest QB's in the NFL, which often makes up for his shortcomings. Jeff George had a great arm, but a 10 cent head. Didn't get him very far. That being said, they would really need to see that Beck just won't cut it as a NFL QB for them to cut him over McCown. I wouldn't see the point of keeping both Pennington and McCown unless this team was a contender for the playoffs and needed an experienced back-up QB.
NO WAY NO HOW NOT GONNA HAPPEN. BECK WILL BE A PHIN THIS YEAR! I HAVE NO DOUBT IN MY SEA GOING MIND. (I put it in all caps so maybe this will put an end to it)
I wouldn't think releasing a new second rounder would be a smart move if a veteran came in. I would be more inclined to believe McCown would be dismissed if he can't seperate himself in competition between two rookies(almost) The Phins are more into developing the position for the future, not veteran backups. Pennington is accurate and a competitor when Healthy.
My inside source at the ThunderBird swap shop Jets Fan Club..over heard a green face painted Omar Kelly saying something to that effect....Beck getting released....
Both of those guys are die-hard beck supporters though. They aren't exactly objective members of the media...
