By the way, I giggled uncontrollably reading that Goran Dragic refers to Hassan Whiteside as "Whitey"

I'd welcome Lebron back b/c I trust Riley. It wouldn't be b/c I personally think Lebron is the best fit. I think at best he'd be a challenge to fit in. I think he'd bring more expectations than should be reasonably expected. People would assume it would be the big 3 again, but Lebron and Wade (and possibly Bosh) are lesser players now. It would take a greater supporting cast and that requires cap space. I don't think Lebron would make that sacrifice. I think he gave up his best chance at multiple rings when he returned to Cleveland. He gave that up for a chance to win one there, more control and a chance to maximize his contract each year. I don't think it's likely he'd give up salary or control again to return.

I think this current Heat team is giving us a chance to see just how good of a coach Spo is. With the big 3, it was a tough spot to be in. If you weren't winning championships, you were failing. And with three big stars, with big egos, two of them being extremely close, that is not easy. I think Spo did a good job in that situation, but he'll probably never really get the credit for it. After LeBron left there was a hangover, and a team that simply wasn't all that talented at the beginning of the year, and a team that was very new to playing with each other at the end of the year. Now he finally has a team that has a mix of young talent, and veteran talent, without as many egos set in their ways as there were in the big 3 era, and we're getting a chance to see Spo really put his stamp on this team. I really feel that he deserves a ton of credit for what he's done this year and should probably be in the COY discussion when you look at their success despite all the injuries they've faced.

Look at what Winslow and Richardson are doing their rookie years. It's easy to say Miami got lucky but two rookies playing as well and dependably as they are always harkens back to coaching IMO

I wonder if it would be accurate to say that your season high-water mark for 3 point makes should be about half of what you do in practice.

Section mentioned that James Jones and Mike Miller used to make 90 out of 100 in practice at times. I think it would be safe to say that they didn't necessarily average 90 makes out of 100 attempts...maybe somewhere around 80 or 85?

Well, Miller has topped 45% in a season four times in his career, and is a career 41% shooter. Jones has has topped 45% in a season twice and is a career 40% shooter.

So my gut tells me that if Josh Richardson is averaging over 70 makes out of 100 in practice (says he doesn't come off the court unless he does it) and his best is 79 out of 100, my gut tells me he's like a 38% shooter that could have seasons above 40%. Right now he's working on 49% so he could slump a bit (hopefully not).

But I will say I think a big part of the key here is there's been a global uplifting of three point shooting success that you can track to Luol Deng, Joe Johnson, Josh Richardson and even Dragic on his last 30 attempts. Miami has always been able to kick the ball out to wide open three point shooters. All season long they've had the ability to do that. What's been missing is the ability to make wide open three pointers, and the confidence to actually shoot those wide open shots.

The only one with the confidence to do it consistently was Bosh and he was having a good year from behind the arc, even went to the three point competition at the All Star break.

Also have to take into account that some people are just gamers and play better with pressure. I'm nowhere near NBA caliber but I know I make a lot more shots in game situations than just shooting around. I seriously doubt he maintains that % but it wouldn't shock me if he developed into a consistent low 40s guy.

If Josh Richardson becomes a career 38% shooter from three, then he is gonna be an all-star, because the kid jumps out of the building, has a lightening quick first step, and is a full 6'-6".

Yup, pretty much. Defends both guard positions at a high level. And in college he shot off the bounce a lot given his role, and was damn good around the elbow area.

It's crazy how much we're relying on these two kids to play meaningful roles and minutes. A couple years ago wasn't the narrative that "Spo hates rookies" or whatever? We have TWO rookies who are crucial to the success of a dangerous playoff team. That is RARE in the NBA. These are some seriously promising pieces for this franchise going forward. Heat culture type guys too, it seems.

Also...any chance we rest some starters/vets tonight? The Pelicans are injured to the point of being a DLeague team, basically, and we go to SAS tomorrow.

If Winslow eventually develops an offensive game, Richardson continues on his current trajectory, and Whiteside keeps up this level of play after getting paid (and obviously signs here), this team should have zero dropoff going forward. I can't remember the last time Miami had this much young talent. Maybe Wade/Butler/Odom, but I think this group may have a higher ceiling overall.

We are definitely bullying the Pelicans so far. Sheesh, free agents are salivating hoping Riley calls them to jump on the bandwagon.

Well this is a nice relaxing game, lol. Pelicans should probably forfeit their games if these are the players they have available. Good grief.

Let's rest some dudes for the Spurs tomorrow. More Gerald Green! More McBob!

Good win. The Pels had some fight in them at home, they weren't gonna just lay down and take a 20-30 point beat down in front of their fans. They made a run, but the Heat pulled back out in front when it counted. I don't think all members of the Heat were giving everything during that fourth quarter until it counted. There was a possession with a little over two minutes to go, you could really tell defensively everyone especially Dragic knew this was the put-away possession, the speed kicked up several notches and it ended up being a great defensive effort. So I don't think it was necessarily as close as it felt when they pulled within 5 points.

This team the way they're playing since the All Star break...they make you dream big.

This crappy Pels team just beat the Clippers without:
    Anthony Davis
    Tyreke Evans
    Eric Gordon
    Ryan Anderson
    Norris Cole
    Quincy Pondexter

I'm sure Spo let em know.

    TCB. Nice win. They compete.

Ref Bill Kennedy tripped Dragic early in the game and he has a mild sprain. So he is touch and go for the Spurs tomorrow. Gonna be fun.

Hang on, pump the breaks a little bit. I never said they were better, I said their ceiling might be higher, and I believe that. Wade is clearly the best player of the six. There's no debate on that. Whiteside is on his way to challenging for the best center in the league, though, Winslow has the chance to be a special player (he's already one of the best defensive players in the NBA at 19), and Richardson might just have all-star potential. Hell, since Richardson started getting regular minutes against Atlanta, he has a higher ppg than Butler did in his season alongside Wade and Odom.

With the Next Heat win, they will clinch their 17th winning season in Pat Riley's 21 years here. When they clinch a playoff berth, it will mark their 17th and the second most playoff berths in that same time period.

If they clinch the Division, it will be their 12th in 21 seasons. If they get a top 3 seed, it will also be their 12th. They are also 4th in Wins in that time period, 3 games back from Dallas for 3rd. If you add playoff wins, Miami is 3rd. They have 113 playoff wins in Riley era. 3rd most.

Pat Riley owns one Exec. of the Year award (2011).

His resume this year suggests, he might have his second.

Nah. They haven't lost at home yet (neither has Golden State) and it seems they really want that record of being undefeated at home.

Go ruin it. Take your shot.

I suppose. I guess they may still want to see just how good they are now that the rookies are both playing well, Whiteside has gone from a stat collector to a winning player, Joe Johnson is improving the flow of the offense, and Deng has had a renaissance at the four position. But if Dragic's ankle is bad, I'd still sit he and Wade.

I'm more worried about Dragic and anybody else being healthy and as rested as possible for the playoffs than I am about whether or not the Spurs go undefeated at home or not this season. I also don't know where I prefer them to end up in terms of seeding since 3 to 6 are such unknowns and even 1 and 2 might not be set.

Also, why risk the confidence deflation that would be associated with trying your damnedest to win the game and getting beaten, for a team in the West?

Right now they should be prioritizing the East and boosting their confidence that they can compete against and beat any team in the East bar none, which they already kind of did when they blew out the Cavs at home. If they really sell out to beat the Spurs and come short, that would suck.

Heat are not really likely in their current state to get "blown out". They will be competitive. If you get into a close game, it will be a good dress rehearsal for the playoffs.

So I was listening to LeBatard's Show on Monday and he mentioned Tony Fiorentino and Eric Reid have been beefing. They played a clip where Reid clearly ignored Fiorentino and left him hanging and said this has been going on for some time. Has anyone else noticed this? I didn't except for the 1 clip they played about Tony discussing Barry University basketball.

I decided to watch some Whiteside highlights from the end of last season. Here he had a fantastic game against Orlando. It's unbelievable just how much better of a player he is now. The jump shot, spacing, anticipation, picks... all so much better.

Ive always had the feeling E. Reid and Coach Tony have never been buddies. They're probably just professionally nice to each other but I doubt they get their families together for Sunday cookouts so to speak.
