Let Lamar Miller walk, lose out on his replacement when you have a ton of other positions to fill, #Dolphins.
WOW i saw this coming, and Denver waited till the last minute to dick us over on possible other free agent RB's. I hope wew got the right coach cause the talent is seeping from an already bad team..
Wasn't the FO being a bunch of shadesters when they front-loaded the contract so Denver wouldn't be likely to match? I'd say that having the rug pulled out from them on this match might have been deserved.
No big loss. We lose people and some here think it's a big travesty. Didn't the people we're letting go only win us 6 games last year? I too wanted Miller to stay, but has been the case for many years, a good RB is easy to come by and a lot cheaper.
Very disappointing, I thought he would have been a solid replacement for Miller. I am not excited at all about an Ajayi/Williams combo heading into the season. Zeke Elliot could be possible in the first, but I don't think he makes it to us now. Guy is the next AP. Not a big fan of Derrick Henry, Saban uses those kids up and spits them out. Wonder if it is worth kicking tires on Foster perhaps on a 1-2 year deal.
Jay Ajayi could gain a more featured role in the offense. He showed flashes of play making ability when given the ball last season, so give him the ball. He is also very capable of catching the ball and making plays. Would I want him to be our every down back, given 20+ touches a game? I'm not sure because of the injury concerns. But he is definitely capable of 10-15 touches a game in a more prominent role. Damien Williams has shown flashes of play making ability in a very limited role. He has good hands and can catch the ball, he can carry the ball. Again utilise the talent on the roster. He might not be a starter on this roster, or even more than the third guy on the depth chart, but he is capable if given a chance. Give him a handful of touches a game. At this point if we run an offense similar to Chicago, one that run the ball 29 times on average last season, what we would need to find in free agency or the draft is a back that is capable of being an every down back and contributing alongside Jay and Damien. Chris Johnson showed he can still make plays in the NFL last season with Arizona, he would come fairly cheap. Ronnie Hillman showed play making ability with the Broncos, again he shouldn't be overly expensive. And what about Arian Foster, we wouldn't need him to carry the load like he did with Houston, he again could be fairly inexpensive on a one or two year deal. If we paired a veteran with Jay and Damien, I think we'd have a good trio of backs to go forwards with. Or we could try and find another back in the draft, though whether we would want a trio of young inexperienced running backs is debatable. For me, this isn't bad news as such that we aren't getting CJ Anderson. He is talented and I would have liked him on the roster, but there are other capable backs available in free agency and the draft that could contribute to our running game. And that's without considering Jay could be promoted to a more prominent role in this offense.
Some people just want to knock Miami for anything. They gave him a poison pill contract and Denver swallowed it without a chaser. That is their right. All the best to C.J. in Denver. To his credit, C.J. didn't really want to be in Denver. He wanted to be in Miami and was surprised that Denver matched. Can't blame the Dolphins for this one. You really can't.
I never understood why CJ Anderson was such a big deal. I think we were overpaying for an average running back. I agree that we probably still need to add a back, but if there is one position where I think you can get a good bang for your buck, it is running back. Last year, Dallas got McFadden for a ham sandwich and he was top 5 in rushing. If we wind up drafting Elliott, we should be happy; he is a playmaker, and Anderson really is not. Here is a list of running backs that I think will be better than Anderson next year: Peterson Bell Gurley Miller Freeman Stewart Forte McCoy (if he plays) Hill Charles Martin Gore Elliott My point is, that we are losing a top 15 back that we would have been top dollar for. Of all the moves we've made, this is the one that concerns me the least.
Don't give two craps about C.J. Anderson or any RB. Fix the OL and just about any RB can have success.
Denver didn't do anything wrong. They took the time they were granted to make a decision and their decision was to match the offer. Perhaps they were looking at other free agent RB's too and they determined that Anderson was the best one still available. The Dolphins knew there was a good chance the Broncos would match the offer, so they should have been prepared for this decision.
If this means we end up drafting BPA at 13 and that's Elliott.. we'll be very happy Dolphins fans.. That guy does it all, run between the tackles, outside, catch, block. He is the total package. Still wouldn't mind Alex Collins with a late round pick though.. he had a bad combine but man he was great in Arkansas.. We should explore trading a 2nd or 3rd round pick for a high quality guard..
Look, I am all in on Zeke Elliott....He will be this years Todd Gurley provided he gets the necessary touches. I loved Lamar Miller, but lets not kid ourselves....He wasn't in the same class as a Todd Gurley. I just think Elliott is a lock to be successful in the pros. He'd be the most talented back we have had since Ricky Williams. He's an instant contributor from day one.
