From PFF: Now they’ve gone out and added defensive end Olivier Vernon, who saw the transition tag the Dolphins used on him removed after the team signed Mario Williams. It’s another huge deal. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports it is a five-year contract worth up to $85 million with $52.5 million in guaranteed money, although there’s no note about structure or the nature of the guarantees at this point. That’s a bit less in total money than Malik Jackson got from the Jaguars, but the guarantee is bigger than Jackson’s and any other that a defensive end has received.

That's sick money. If we signed him to that deal most peoples heads on here would explode. Let hope they keep Wake.
Wow! I didn't want Vernon back at any cost. His negatives outweigh his positives in my amateur opinion. Let's start with the positive. He's an above avg rush DE. He always seemed to be at the right place at the right time after the 1st rusher flushed the qb. He was there to mop up. This was definitely the case in his big sack season. He's also very young for his nfl experience. He's worth 8mil a year based on this. Again imo. The negatives: he has a peanut for a brain and not a particularly hard shelled peanut at that. He doesn't set the edge worth a flip in the run game. I wouldn't have given him half this contract. Hope the G-Men don't expect more than 8 sacks a year.
Excellent point. We ve seem the same thing happen in baseball. Even mediocre baseball players are making 10-20 mill a year. Only their contracts are guaranteed. Wish baseball would come up with a way to cut under-performers. If the cap continues to climb then that Suh contract won't look some burdensome. If Suh, Williams, Wake and Phillips can play to their talents then we ve got an incredibly talented DL.
yea well see next year if you guys feel the same way the only reason this team is not dead in the water right now is because they bumped 18 m to next year go look at the projections for next year and realize the sooner they get rd of this ****ing idiot Tannenblow the farther ahead this team will be Just a matter of time before history repeats itself and we morph into the J _ E _T _S, jets jets jets
Wow, so I go to the golf course for four hours and the Dolphins lose Vernon, Miller, and cut Grimes. Oh well at least they were able to keep a below average LB in Misi and a very overrated Cameron Jordan. They also signed a DE who seemed to quit on his team last year and traded for two players who are injured and probably would have been cut if the Eagles couldn't find a desperate trade partner. I understand them losing Vernon because the Giants vastly overpaid for what I consider a good but not great DE. I think they should have matched the Texans offer to Miller and see if that would have convinced him to stay. Quality RB's are not a dime a dozen as some people seem to think they are. I think losing Miller is a huge loss right now. There is no RB in free agency who is better than Miller and unless they draft a RB in round one of this years draft, the Dolphins will end up with a worse RB unit in 2016, IMO. I know it is still very early in the free agency process, but so far I am completely underwhelmed. I don't see the moves they have made so far making this team any better than it was last year. Hopefully any additional moves they make in free agency and the players they take in the draft will enhance my view of these off season moves. I will go on record stating that I hope the trade with the Eagles doesn't include a switch of the two teams first round draft picks. Because I don't think the players from the Eagles are worth the loss of the 8th pick in the draft for the 13th pick in the draft. I think a 7th round pick for two injured players should be the maximum the Dolphins should have given the Eagles. In fact I think even with his crazy wife and his reduced effectiveness as he gets older, Grimes is still a better CB than Maxwell. I would have preferred they try to restructure Grimes contract instead of trading for a player who was one of the worst CB's in the league last season. If he wasn't willing to restructure or he just wanted out of Miami, I can't blame the Dolphins for cutting him. I just have to wonder if they even tried to work out a deal with him that would have kept him in Miami. I have no doubt Miko will report the facts, (according to her) once her husband signs with his new team.
No cares- Good for them to pay that much money, no way we could have or should have. That contract is ridiculous for those of you who don't understand.
That amount is insane. No, he's not worth that amount. I usually don't harp on the amounts, but this is getting out of hand. I used to like Vernon when others didn't, but he certainly hasn't shown enough as of yet to warrant that deal. I would've certainly let him walk. It's amazing these guys can stay motivated with this kind of guaranteed money. Unlike most, I do not hate the moves the team has made so far.. I am not saying I love them either. I am in wait and see mode. It could work out. This is all part of the puzzle. You have to wait until after the draft to see how it all fits and works out. Look what's going on around the league. This is nuts.
The one thing that I read about Vernon is that QB hits (of which he was #3 in the league) can sometimes transition to sacks. If that happens, the deal would be ... digestible. But man that is a helluva chance to take. Can't say I would have paid that, but it really means we need to be looking at DL heavily in FA and draft.
He's NEVER going to live up to that contract. When Olivier Vernon is getting paid more than JJ Watt... there's a problem. It's called desperation on behalf of the Giants.
Damn, just damn...that is a lot of money. He could take over Libya with the guaranteed money alone. Sheik ala Vernon will sadly more likely get overtaken by labia.
Since the last CBA was signed off by the players and the owners, draft picks are paid based on where they are drafted and there really isn't much any agent can do to increase the compensation a drafted rookie will sign for. It is the second contract, if the player has been an effective starter in the NFL, where the agent can get the big bucks for his player. I wanted the Dolphins to keep Vernon if they could afford him, but the money he got from the Giants is absurd. He is now being paid as if he is one of the top defensive players in the entire league. He is good, but I don't even see him as a top 50 defensive player in the NFL at this time. I thought the Dolphins paid too much for Suh last year, but at least he was viewed as one of the top defensive linemen in the entire league. I just don't see Vernon as that type player, but obviously the Giants think he can be that type of player. We will see.
LOL really we have Suh, Wake, Williams, Phillips and Mitchell. We need to focus on G, CB and LB in the draft obviously. Probably a back to pair with Ajayi as well
So, we improved the position for at least next year and paid half to do it. I'm assuming Mario hasn't totally given up. I'll take those chances.
And we can't forget that we also lost Shelby, Wake is coming off an achillies, so for the moment we are weaker at DE now.
That's why I added that caveat. Anyhow, I'm taking those chances because I don't think Olivier Vernon was very good.
Good for him. At the same time, I'm glad we didn't overpay for his services. He is a young, promising player who is a good pass rusher. His overall impact on the game, being below average against the run and poor choices on the field make this an easy pass for Miami. miami has had enough time of watching him on and off the field to know whether he is worth locking up long term.
If you stay around here long enough you will see that often time this board is split on a players abilities. some love Tannehill, some not so much etc...... with Vernon we were all pretty much on the same page on him being not that good.
Mario was used way out of position in Barfalo. They often had him dropping in coverage. Crazy. That's not who he is. They will probably use him here like they used Carlos Dunlap in Cinci.
