The Dolphins hope --- through free agency and the draft --- to add another defensive end that’s stout against the run (even if they exercise their right to match an offer to Olivier Vernon), at least one starting linebacker (preferably in the middle), a starting safety and starting cornerback.

There aren’t a lot of starting-caliber defensive ends in free agency, but as Armando and I both heard independently in recent days, the Dolphins very much like the Rams’ William Hayes (5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, rated fifth against the run among all defensive ends by Pro Football Focus for 2015). The Dolphins always could circle back to Derrick Shelby, but they have not attempted to re-sign him to this point. Defensive end could be filled in the first round if Oregon’s DeForest Buckner or Ohio State’s Joey Bosa surprisingly slips to Miami’s eighth overall pick.

The Dolphins want to add two corners, and UF’s Vernon Hargreaves is very much in play for Miami’s pick at No. 8. And keep an eye on well-regarded Bengals free agent Vincent Rey. He can play inside or outside linebacker, is excellent on special teams and well-respected, and Joseph likes him. He has made a combined 22 starts the past two seasons, with 121 and 98 tackles.

That moment when you realize everything they said about Tannenbaum was true...This looks like they're going to put the team in salary cap hell. Looks like they're going to excercise Suh's option to save 20 million and kick that can further down the road.

It's a good strategy when the road gets bigger every year going forward

I hope your right. Would've made more sense to franchise tag Vernon. Then if there weren't any trade partners, they could exercise the option on Suh. Now Vernon is likely gone. Wake is not looking to restructure anything but his achilles. Not one word about Shelby, Fede, or Dion...

I held your opinion last year when everyone was worried about spending too much on Clay and Mathis, lol.Just to pay more for Cameron, fml.

It's true, but also true is that the cars on the road get bigger every year, as the cap gets bigger the price tag of players gets bigger, so turning his one bad cap year into three bad cap years is still a bad idea imo.

Olivier Vernon is averaging 7 sacks and 50 tackles a year, granted he missed some games. He's so-so against the run- I hope that he signs elsewhere, get him and Brent Grimes out, sign Pac Man and William Hayes, use the saved money to bolster the OL and defense. If we can trade down, pick up a 2nd or 3rd and draft Ragland I'd be fine with that. I just don't think that Venon and Grimes are worth $23 million per year combined.
