Pennington was causing problems in NY this offseason because he doesn't want to be a backup, so that would mean that we put developing Beck and Henne on hold because Penny is a better option? The boy has a hard time staying healthy and I would much rather stick to the original program and see what our young players can do.

And we won't know what level they can reach if we keep falling for every quick fix that becomes available. Player development is crucial for this team, we've wasted so many draft picks over the years that it isn't funny. We can't just toss Beck and Henne off to the side to salvage a win or two.

I guess where we disagree is that Beck and Henne will be tossed aside. They can still be developed, even if they aren't starting. I'm of the opinion that success breeds success. I think its better to put those guys into a winning situation as opposed to a losing situation. And from the reports we are getting, neither is ready to be a starting NFL QB at this point.

Nothing wrong with letting them sit and learn from a veteran QB imo. Beck and Henne can compete next year for the starting job.

Well, to be fair, we also have no idea what Ireland has in mind, or what our braintrust's opinions are of all three QB's.

The OP only mentioned "inquiry" not called with offer, so we simply don't know what will happen.

A part of me suspects if we sign him it will happen after the preseason game, I've read it somewhere on here that only 2 Qb's will play Saturday.

The cynical part of me thinks that is to keep someone from getting injured and become unmovable...

What is the difference if this team wins 2 games with Beck and Henne or 4 games with Penny. Either way we'll still be one of the worst teams in the NFL. I don't think that those 2 games would make much of a difference to creating a winning situation.

What I'm reading, especially in the past few days, is that the QB's have been the victims of the severe case of the "dropsies" that seems to infected our WR's. Other than that Beck was really coming on and Henne has been a pleasent surprise. It would be a waste IMO to put them back on the bench.

I think we are a .500 team with or without Pennington....but thats a different argument I'm sure I'll end up in sooner or later :wink2:

You still try to win games man. Just b/c the team is rebuilding doesn't mean you don't make the moves necessary to win ball games.

If Pennington was offered for a draft pick, that would be different. As a free agent? Why not?

    No doubt
Do you put winning at all costs above developing your players?

The whole purpose of drafting Beck and Henne was to develop them so that they can be the QB's of the future. By sitting them on the bench so Chad Pennington (or McCown) can get us an extra win or two is not going to help Beck and Henne develop into NFL players. If Penny is around for this year and this year only, next year at this time Beck will be another year old and another step closer to being given up on. But if Penny is brought in I'm afraid (and rightly so) that the FO will change directions and try to force a "win now" on us and that is what has gotten us to the point of being a 1-15 team.

We all praised the new direction that Parcells and Co. were bringing to this team, now all of a sudden we change our stance because we might be able to win 2 more games this year? That's foolish IMO and we'll be making the same mistakes over and over again.

Chad Pennington steps into Miami and is the starting Quarterback from Day 1. Josh McCown is garbage, a career back-up who was only brought to Miami so that they would have a veteran prescense. Miami now will soon have a much better option on the table, someone Parcells drafted here in New York, and I believe they will jump at the chance to get him.

Listen guys, Chad was a great Quarterback here for us from 2002-2004 but in 2005 when he tore his rotator cuff for the second time in less than a year, he was done. Can he win you some games? Sure. Last year though was the first year where the smarts of Chad that you always hear people talking about were not there. He made stupid, STUPID mistakes in the 4th quarter of games almost single handedly losing four games in the fourth quarter alone.

At the best, he'll be your best option at Quarterback and could win your team 5 or 6 games in 2008. Better than what Josh McCown would do if you're planning to start a veteran all season long.

None of us have any clue how many more or less game we'd win with Pennington so to put a number on it isn't fair.

Also, how would it affect the development of the younger guys? Aren't Beck and Henne going to be on the bench to start the year anyway?

    Different situations.

Pennington will be released b/c his team traded for Favre to replace him. Zach was let go b/c the Phins wanted to get younger.

Why would Pennington hate Miami? He always beat the Phins

Parcells has his number on speed dial. He hung up his wife's call and dialed Pennington's agent the second Pennington was released.

It did say in the practive blog that Tuna and Ireland were there and then gone so maybe they are making the call now. I am against bringing Chad here unless McCown is the one they are getting rid of. NO WAY I WANT BECK TO LEAVE. He is still young and is showing progression in training camp. What kind of game would week 1 be if Favre vs Pennington. Heck it may be televised nationally. That would be great since I live in TN and never get to see the PHINS live hardly.

This is how far we've come....people are actually excited to get a QB who in the last three years threw 29 TDs and 28 INTs, less than 7 yards per attempt average, barely over 10 yards a completion average (which was mostly due to his receivers RAC), and couldn't throw an out pattern if you gave him a bazooka. :pity:

I've never been a big Pennington fan. Never been a big fan of any Jet com to think of it, but regardless I think Pennington is a huge upgrade over McCown.

Sorry, I couldnt agree with the majority here MORE.

No way no how do I want Pennington in Miami. He is an above average QB with little or NO arm strength what-so-ever.

    No thanks.

Just like it isn't necessarily fair to automatically assume that Pennington will make us better. It's all speculation and I see Miami right now as a 2-4 win team, with Penny we are a 3-5 win team.

Where did you hear this? I thought there was an open competition and may the best man win.

L2G - i agree with your ultimate principle, but i don't think you're understanding where the "pro pennington" camp is coming from. i still don't see us getting him, but if we DID i'd embrace him, and here's why.

we need a vet QB on the team. McCown is our only vet QB now. Pennington would replace McCown (i'm guessing), so Pennington would be the new vet QB. would you rather have the young guys learn from McCown or Pennington? Pennington has more talent than McCown, even if it is only marginally more.

no one is advocating bringing pennington here to start for us and be our "future." we're all saying that if he came here, it would be an upgrade to McCown.

i fail to see how you can challenge that. ;)

Josh McCown is a below average QB. The guy is proven trash.
John Beck is as unproven as they come.
Chad Henne is the future, but probably not the present.

I don't see how an "above average QB" isn't worthy of a look when your other three QB's have the above descriptions? At the very least, allow him to come in and compete. If he performs better than McClown and Beck, which he probably will, then you release #4.

Because Pennington doesn't want to be a backup, as evidenced by his "I want to be traded or released" statements from this past offseason. :tongue2: He wanted no part in playing 2nd fiddle to Clemens and was miffed that the Jets were considering Matt Ryan before the draft. If I thought that he would be okay being a backup and letting the young guys get their shot, then I would be all for it, infact I was rooting for the Jets to release him so we could sign him. Then I saw the comments about wanting to be a starter and I decided that he wasn't what we needed because we are in year 1 of the rebuild and we have 2 very talented young QB's who deserve a shot. :wink2:

If he comes here it will to become a starter, otherwise I see him going elsewhere (KC, Minny, Chicago, etc).

He said he wants to have a chance to compete to be the starter, not he wants to be the starter. That's all he ever said with the Jets.

Maybe Noodle Arm Pennington can give our defense a through briefing about the Jet's play calls, so we will be ready for them and Favre come Week One.

If the guy could throw the ball more than 10 yards without a running start, then yeah sign him

If it is for nothing more than a looksie to see how he's doing, excellent. Bring him in for a day. I just don't think he is a step up from McCown

    To me that says...

"I want to be a starter. If the Jets make me a backup, I'm under contract so what choice do I have? But if I'm a FA or I'm traded, I want to be a starter".

All I can say is; "Please no Miami Dolphins please no." :pity:

Pennington has a weak arm, probably wouldn't have beat out Clemens without Favre in the mix, and he can't stay healthy. He would be a terrible fit in Miami as I would rather see the young guys take the hits this season.

I really hope this doesn't happen.

***Also I'm wondering if Pennington is signed then who is the odd man out? Or would the Fins keep 4 QBs?
