His passing is what struck me when I started watching him on the Nets and then last night with the Heat. There's a lot of instantaneous passing as soon as the ball gets to him, like he's thinking a number of steps ahead. It's nice to have a veteran with that kind of awareness.

The thing I think he's going to be disappointed in is, when he passes so quickly out to the perimeter to find someone like Dragic or Deng wide open for the three, they're not going to take them because they're not good and confident three point shooters. They hesitate and pump fake for the drive even though the defender isn't in position to block them. And Joe Johnson also does that because I don't know that he's used to the idea that he's Ray Allen. It took Bosh a while to really embrace the idea that he's the knockdown shooter in those catch and shoot situations, and I think it might take Joe some time as well. It's been like 8 years since he functioned like that.

If they pick up Marcus Thornton and then get those two out on the court together, you could see that flowing a little better. But I think that would mean separating Wade and Johnson in the rotation and right now those two seem to have instant chemistry, so it's tough.

I doubt we'd play the Celtics at this point, though, unless both teams start to struggle and it's a 4/5, or unless both teams upset the top 2 seeds in round 2. We've played well against Atlanta and Indy this year, and I while I doubt we beat them, we actually match up decently against the Cavs.

We aren't true contenders without Bosh. He's our best player, and making the finals without your best player is damn hard. I wouldn't read all that much into beating the Knicks for a 4th time. We didn't even break 100 points. The offense still goes through stretches of being awful (like Saturday). The East is going to be pretty even 3-8. Ultimately I don't give us much of a legit shot vs CLE with CB out...unless Goran decides to go HAM and just rip Kyrie apart.

If Bosh does come back full strength though, look out. We have a nice mix of veteran experience and young energy guys who can defend multiple positions.

Wow. Didn't see that coming. Heat are nearing a buyout of Beno Udrih that would put them back below the luxury tax.

So does that mean they're going to discontinue pursuit of Marcus Thornton? Or does it mean that Gerald Green is about to be served his walking papers?

Interesting. I'd imagine if they waive Green and he gets claimed, then they would still be ok to sign Thornton. And you would think Green would probably get claimed considering he's on a minimum deal.

But I thought the point of waiving a player and being claimed would be a team managing to get over the salary floor from an accounting perspective without actually having to pay much money.

That wouldn't seem to apply to a player on the minimum like Green, would it?

Well, that was one reason why a player would get claimed, and would have worked with Udrih's salary. A team could legitimately want Gerald Green on their roster. While he's been putrid lately, there are always teams out there that think they can get the most out of a player. And for the minimum, there isn't much risk. I am far from an expert on this stuff, but based off the previous info I read from Albert Random, I believe all of this would work.

Well, "he would prefer to be someplace other than Cleveland" can probably be said about most of the population there, so that part is certainly believable.

As for the report, this is what was talked about when this whole thing first happened. It takes stars capable of really checking their egos to make this type of situation work. I think it also helps when you are a seasoned veteran who's already had their share of time in the limelight. Because of that, I think it was easier for Bosh and Wade to accept their roles (although I'm sure it still wasn't very easy). Irving has yet to see that kind of stardom as he's only 23. It's completely logical for him to not feel great about the situation.

All of that being said, it's very possible it could all work out in the end. There were always crazy rumors about the Heat in the Big 3 era, and then they'd always get it together and get to the Finals.

Everyone focuses on Kevin Love, but there's a lot of evidence pointing to Kyrie as being the guy that doesn't really fit. We've seen Lue, LeBron, JR, James Jones, and Love all take veiled shots with "keep the ball moving" and "ball sticks in one spot" type comments recently. Pretty clear who those are aimed at.

Ok, so after reading Albert Random's tweets, I have a little more clarity on the Udrih thing and it's probably better than we thought. First of all, by buying him out, you would first have to put him on waivers. This gives Philly the chance to claim him to get over the floor like it was previously mentioned. This would be the ideal situation for all parties. If he clears waivers, the buyout takes effect, and would still put the Heat under the tax, but by a lesser amount than if he's claimed. It appears that if he isn't claimed they would still need more to happen in order to sign another player. If he is claimed, though, the Heat would have enough roster space and money under the tax to add 2 more players.

Sounds good. I'm all for it.

It sounds like this is something they're doing because they want to move on Marcus Thornton quickly. I had seen it floated that the Heat could keep Udrih on roster for almost the entire season in order to make the proposition of claiming him all the sweeter for a Philadelphia. The longer Miami keeps Udrih, the more of his contract Miami ends up paying, yet by claiming him the 76ers would get to account for all of it (including what Miami pays)...so every week the price tag of actual coins the 76ers need to pay Udrih would go down while the accounting value stays up.

But that may not be an ideal situation in the negotiations with Marcus Thornton who may understandably want to know much sooner which team he's going to for the rest of the season. Similar to how Joe Johnson didn't really want to wait until March 10th or whatever. So the Heat may have to force Philly's hand, make them make their decision sooner, and if it scares Philly off then they'll just buy out Udrih and Thornton will know he needs to seek a different team.

I tweeted Albert Random to see if the Heat would need to make more moves to add another player or two and he said it would depend on the amount of the buyout.

The fact that Udrih is taking a buyout at all is pretty crazy, really. He stands to gain nothing by doing so. This is either Pat Riley working his magic once again, all parties understanding he will most likely be claimed by Philly, or some kind of "wink-wink" deal where the Heat sign Udrih in the offseason.

Quite frankly not for the first time I suspect the Heat have a method of backdooring money into players' pockets that skirts the salary cap.

You really have to wonder. There are certainly a lot of fortuitous things that have happened to the Heat financially. Anthony Carter's agent's brain fart. Wade continually taking less. UD taking less. The big 3 taking less to come together.

The die has been cast. Heat waived Beno Udrih.

If the 76ers claim Beno Philly gets to push their salary accounting figure closer to the salary floor and save about $1 million of actual dollars in the process. If that happens the Heat will have $2.1 million under the luxury tax which they can use to pay Marcus Thornton and possibly even another player.

If the 76ers don't claim Beno, then the Heat will get their buyout and still go below the luxury tax, but they won't have enough room to get Marcus Thornton.

    Heat officially waive Udrih.

He'll be in waivers until 5:00 Wednesday. If Philly claims him we can add perhaps two players and stay under the tax

If I'm not mistaken we can definitely add two players. The only reason we wouldn't be able to is if we had to pay more than the minimum for one of them.

Ugly moment for Lebron which im sure he will justify it some way.

Gave up a turnover to Paul George and instead of going for his usual chase down blocked, he kinda ran behind him and then suddenly just stopped, gave up on the play and let PG get an easy dunk.

Wonder if something is up in the locker room. The Cavs energy and body language is just bad.

This year Kevin Martin is 39.4% on catch-and-shoot threes, and 7 of 15 on left and right corner threes (46.6%). He's an 88% free throw shooter. He's 28 of 68 (41.2%) when he's "open" for three.

He qualifies as the kind of pure shooter that we'd like to have out there for Joe Johnson to find and kick the ball out to on the perimeter. Seemed like already in the Knicks game there were times Joe was kicking out to an open three point shooter and we just didn't shoot it or we shot it badly because we're not very good at them.

Wow. I knew the three point situation was bad. I didn't know it was THIS bad.

The two best shooters in "open" or "wide open" situations are both injured, Chris Bosh and Tyler Johnson. They were head-and-shoulders above the rest.

Luol Deng is 49 of 149 (32.9%) on "open" or "wide open" threes.
Gerald Green is of 50 of 153 (32.7%) on "open" or "wide open" threes.
Goran Dragic is 36 of 119 (30.3%) on "open" or "wide open" threes.
Justise Winslow is of 23 of 88 (26.1%) on "open" or "wide open" threes.
Josh Richardson is 6 of 25 (24.0%) on "open" or "wide open" threes.
Dwyane Wade is 6 of 27 (22.2%) on "open" or "wide open" threes.
Josh McRoberts is 7 of 34 (20.6%) on "open" or "wide open" threes.

That total is 177 of 595 (29.7%). These are three pointers where the nearest defender is at least 4 feet away from the shooter.

Here are the two players injured:

Tyler Johnson is 26 of 62 (41.9%) on "open" or "wide open" threes.
Chris Bosh is 74 of 191 (38.7%) on "open" or "wide open" threes.

Luckily, help is on the way. In comes:

Joe Johnson is 74 of 197 (37.5%) on "open" or "wide open" threes.

And perhaps one of these three?

Kevin Martin is 28 of 68 (41.2%) on "open" or "wide open" threes.
Marcus Thornton is 54 of 153 (35.3%) on "open" or "wide open" threes.
Ty Lawson is 30 of 85 (35.3%) on "open" or "wide open" threes.

Seeing this, my preference is for Kevin Martin.

We really need one more shooter. I agree with seeing Joe pass to open 3 pt shots that just aren't getting taken. I believe that getting two or three more 3 pt shots made per game would be huge. Perhaps even more important would be minimizing how many of those days we have where the 3 pt shot percentage is around 15% or less. We've had three such games (out of 6) since the all-star break. Prior to that when we had Bosh we'd had three out of 53 games. Since then Miami is attempting about 5 fewer per game and shooting less than 25%. It's a small sample size, but it's not a good trend. I think one more shooter would help immensely. That could be Bosh coming back or adding one of the guards that we've talked about (or ideally, both). I also think that Richardson is starting to emerge as a 3 pt threat. His shot looks good but just didn't fall before the all-star break. It looks like it's starting to fall more and he's getting the confidence to take more. I don't expect Richardson to be a high volume shooter, but I think he should get maybe three open 3 pt shot attempts per game and make one on average. I'm hoping that Joe plus some or all of those possibilities get us back up to the 18 or 19 attempts and +6 makes per game.

I forgot about the impact of losing TJ.

We really need more attempts and more makes. Bosh got a ton of open looks due to his position, but the faster pace should also yield a few more open 3s for the other guys.
