Why not pick up Pennington? No he will not be a pro bowl QB, But our QB's have looked bad. He will run the offense and hand the ball off to the running back. Our offense will have a lot of the short passing game which helps pennington a great deal. Besides he could also teach Henne and Beck.

Thank you...My goodness its hard when people let their biases stand in the way of OBVIOUS facts.

To defend the Parcells critics, there is NO guarantee that he will be successful in Miami. But based on his track record, he must get the benefit of the doubt.

Henne is, undoubtedly, the QB of the future here. Hes mentally strong and his arm is by far better than anyone we have. CP may be better right now, but in the long term, Henne is a far better prospect.

and why would we do that.. our biggest question is the future of our qb corps.. why would we want to give game reps to penny, when game reps is what WE need to give to our youngsters.. we have actual coaches that teach our qb's and don't need penny for that..

Depending, Henne may get the job after the bye week. IMO, thats the way this thing is heading. Now if whichever veteran starts lights it up or manages the games effectively, then the Move to Henne might be delayed.

But Henne, by all accounts, has been the most impressive QB in camp. So, IMHO, this can only mean that the coaches will be looking for the right time to let the Henne Era begin.

By year three, I think he'll be ready to lead us to the playoffs. I do hope that we are able to keep Beck on board though, because in this league, you do need a reliable backup QB. I think Beck could develop nicely into that role.

Correct. He does not have to clear waivers. Which is no big deal, but if he were mandated to the waiver wire, we'd have first crack at him.

Ooops. I just posted basically the same thing. Good post, Paul. And I agree with our logic.

No team is going to sign Pennington for what hes making in NY. That would be salary cap malfeasance.

No worries, Paul. Henne is going to win this job. Whomever we bring in is only to be a caretaker. Henne is the future.

Because Pennington's a lot better than McCown. If Beck doesn't cut it, you'll need a QB to play at least half a season before Henne takes over and I'd much rather have Pennington doing that than McCown. Not that I'm a big fan of Pennington (although I'm even less a fan of McCown) but he'd be exactly the kind of QB this offense needs.

Alex Smith, I think, is on the outs in SF. They really like JT O'Sullivan. If they could get CP, who knows what comes of Alex Smith? I doubt the 49ers release him, but this is a CRAZY league.

I agree with whomever said Chicago is the most obvious destination. Then, does Rex become a FA?

I don't like pennington much, but I think he's a better option than McCown to fall back on if Beck fails... if he wins the starting job that is. With the history between pennington and parcells, I can see us going after him... In a way i think it wouldnt be bad for us, but more so... i really dont want to see him here. I think thats just because i dislike the jets, and he was/is a Jet.... but i do think he's an upgrade over McCown... only time will tell.

Paul corrected himself. You only pick up a guys salary if you claim him off waivers. CP isn't subject to the waiver wire (its only for players with 4 years or less).

No team will be picking up CPs salary. Thats just crazy talk.

I doubt Smith is going anywhaere SCFF, too much invested in him and he was injured or whatever last season.

The Bears duo of Grossman and Orton are not reminding anyone of even Mike Tomczak...

I'd be surprised if we weren't talking about Pennington internally right now.

We could opt to stand pat until after the first preseason game. Nothing says Pennington has to sign anywhere immediately.

The Bears might be a stop. Minnesota will always come up, though they have Frerotte on the bench.

I agree, like I said in my original post, its UNLIKELy that the 49ers will move him. But you never know what dynamics will play out when a #1 overall pick loses his job to an original 7th round pick. And although O'Sullivan has been around (I think the Saints originally drafted him and then traded him to the Packers, and he ended up with Detroit) it could be a chemistry that just can't be overcome.

So lets say that the Bears get CP. Then Rex gets cut and he goes to SF, totally content to be a backup. If Sean Hill is healthy, and JTO is deemed the starter, Smith could become expendable. Long shot? Sure. Impossible? Not by a long shot.

I hear ya Padre...but Pennington is a better commodity than McCown. Beck and Henne haven't separated themselves in this mess called a QB race and he would have some inside info regarding the jets...is that reason enough to bring him in ?? I don't know. I also don't know the cap ramifications of cutting McClown...

I don't see a move like this being made, but the Tuna has done crazier things...

On a side note, he might be a good option for the Bears...they don't have any WRs to throw to anyways......and he could be a good option for a backup behind Jackson in Minny...he doesn't know the offense, but could hold the fort should something happen to Jackson or if he just stinks the joint up...

Wow..is this out of left field...10 so or practices and Henne is the anointed starter ?? Perhaps he may end up, at some point in time, as the starter here but what accounts did you get that info ?? That's not at all what I've been reading...

I don't see Minnesota bringing in a veteran backup. They have one already in Frerotte, and he knows his role.

If the Vikings bring in a QB, it'll be to start. I think that Jackson's psyche is important to Childress and he won't do anything to cause him doubt. Now if a legit starter came avail, then who knows?

Here is why I think if he is available, we bring Penny in:

    4-12, 9-7, 7-9, 1-15.

    21 wins in 4 seasons.

We can postulate about our young Qb's, at the end of the day, we have to improve and be competitive, if Ireland/Tuna/Sparano believe that Pennington will help us win games, we should bring him in.

    The sooner, the better.

I don't believe he can "leaglly", as Pennington is under contract. But you can be assured he & Pennington did on phones not owned by the Dolphins or Jets :wink2:

CNC because Pennington might be our best chance to win. I hope you don't think they will admit we can't win this year and not play the QB that doesn't give us the best chance to win.

Exactly.....if Pennington comes here, McCown will stay initially but will not be on the roster come that 1st game in September.

A role Frerotte rused to accept with the Dolphins, and that alone set us back a year. Had he stayed in 2006 I think the Dolphins go 8-8 or 9-7 and Satan stays with us.

That's what I thought but wasn't totally sure. So if Penny is released, we can start to negotiate with him, but so can 31 other teams. Hmmm, he may become to expensive if that's the case. However they all won't want him, but I am sure at least 2 if not 3 will bid against us. That could be a problem.

As a rebuilding team, your main focus isn't winning at all costs, it's developing young players and changing the attitude and work ethic of the team. Bringing in Penny isn't going to change our fortunes overnight, all it will serve to do is hold back our young QB's and delay the inevitable. And I'll be totally honest, during the offseason I was hoping that Penny would have been released so the Dolphiins could have picked him up, but only in a backup role (experienced vet) so that Beck could get his playing time. Instead we signed McCown and drafted Henne, now we have our vet with experience and 2 young QB's who need to be able to show what they can do.

I thought about that L2G and for me if we got Pennington we would be getting a much better place holder Qb then McCown is, he knows the offense and we could work out the kinks on our offense.

While Long and maybe Thomas are going through the learning curve, Fasano has never started, Ginn, Hagan, what would be the difference between throwing Beck out there this year compared to last season?

If anything, we have more questions this year then last year.

PEnnington was drafted by Bill Parcells and played in Dan Hennings offense.

The guy gives us the best chace to get to 500. I think Ireland and Bill will pick him up. Like they did in Dallas with Bledsoe & Testaverde
