I am a firm believer you get the best out of your players by creating competition to play. With that said RG III was let go from Washington. If we now possess the QB whisperer as some claim why not bring him in to take a look. The guy is definitely an athlete and a half and could on a rotational basis keep defenses on their heals. Looking for your thoughts??
I'm against it. Your backup should fit into the same system as your starter. You have to use RG3 differently than Tannehill.
Not sure what he would command. Given the situation and Washington just letting him walk can't be much. I'd say 5 a yr. Not hearing any noise about him being available. Kind of interesting fact if you think about it. Seems like he might be Culpepper 2.0. But I have watched a few games and the guy has potential. Very popular with the fans and a hell of a nice guy to boot.
So think about that a minute. In certain circumstances with the wheels he has got. The thought I have is keeping defenses on their heels all the while giving Tannehill all he can handle. If Tannehill is the guy we will know by the end of next year. Not sure that competition is there to push TH from Moore Imagine a 3rd and 2 or 3 with RG III on the read option
I'd be all for it if, like Alex said above, he comes cheap. From what I've heard, RGIII has immaturity issues and refused to grow with the evolving Washington offensive system. He believes in himself, no doubt, but that's also a double edged sword. His confidence could easily be mistaken for arrogance. Perhaps, in the right system, under the proper coaching, and a bit of luck in regards to his injury history, he could turn his career around. But I wouldn't bank on him coming for backup money. Some quarterback-needy team will give him a multiyear deal worth 5-6 million annually, no doubt.
We wouldn't pay him enough to beat teams that really, really need a QB. He needs some work but he has a lot of potential.
Moore does not get $5 million. His cap hit was $2.6 million. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/matt-moore/ I swear it's like an urban legend whenever it comes to people talking about Moore's salary.
It's time to finally save some money on the backup QB position. Imo, we need miller on this team more than whoever backing up tannehill...
That's what I was thinking.(cutting QB Salary) I agree about Miller. TH is in a make or break year. We need a back up plan if he doesn't work out. Especially with his salary. If RG III came in and was as good as or better for 5 or 6 a year we could have the option to move TH in a trade. I am not saying we should just saying it is a contingency if it don't work. I think we all agree Moore is not the answer.
I'm not sure what RGIII has shown that makes people think he's potentially better than Tannehill. I'm all for competition, but if rather have a rookie without questions pushing him, than bringing in RGIII.
I'd probably run a formation with RGIII at halfback on that read option. Then you have the ability for Ryan to keep, RGIII to run, and both players to pass. I wouldnt sign RGIII as a backup but I'd sure as hell sign him as a modern Kordell Stewart with better athleticism.
I wouldn't mind RGIII as a backup but he is in no way competition for TH. RGIII would be on disability if he had played behind our offensive line for the past 4 years. I'm actually surprised by how TH can take a hit. Plus, TH has been putting up pretty good numbers considering the line. I do agree that he is coming into a "make or break" year. But, RGIII can last a season lol.
It's a very bad idea to inject competition into the fold at this point. Presumably one of the primary reasons Gase has come to Miami is to work with and to mold Tannehill. Adding another QB to the mix would only make Gase's job harder because fans and the media would be calling for Tannehill's replacement if he starts off slow, which is quite possible given the change of coaching, and would only add to Gase's learning curve. We have to live and die with Tannehill through the Gase era no matter what. QB is just too complex of a position to give up on as quickly as you would others. Some guys just take longer to figure it out. A guy like Eli Manning was terrible until about his 6th year in the league and now he's got more SB rings than his HoF brother.
When you view it from a vacuum it was. People quickly forget he took less money (under market value for a backup of his caliber) in year 1 of that 2 year deal. His cap hit was $2.5 million with a base salary of $1 million.
Hey what the hell it is only 5 more years we should leave all the same players in place so we don't complicate anyone's job. Maybe at the end of this 5 we can relocate to LA
Or maybe we can just travel back to the 70's when everything was simple. Make sure to wave goodbye to reality as we leave and say hello to our inability to adapt to current times.
Is Shula and Csonka going to be there? I'm in. At least we actually won a few games. I think if memory serves correct we were 17-0 and won two super-bowls.
If you want to push the guy, you find a way to push the guy. You don't hang a replacement over his head. Your boss didn't bring your inevitable replacement in to sit in your office just waiting for you to mess up. I'm sure that would "motivate" you instead of making you look over your shoulder every five minutes.
How do you propose we do that - with Matt Moore? TH looks over his shoulder because the offensive line is terrible
Tanny lifted his game after Philbin would not commit to Tanny being the QB if his play didn't improve. He needs to feel some heat.
I propose that you and I do nothing, which I am fantastic at, and instead we let Adam Gase do what he was brought here to do. I'm fairly certain his first bullet point during the slide entitled "How to Improve QB Play" during his interview was NOT "Bring in RGIII". I'm also fairly certain Tannehill's problems have nothing to do with his work ethic or desire, as neither of those things have ever been questioned in his case, which seem like the primary concerns necessary for "pushing" a QB. I doubt if someone went up to Tannehill and said "Hey, maybe you should just try a little harder to not get your face ripped off by the defense every time you drop back to pass", he would suddenly become amazing.
If I had a dollar for everything Philbin would not commit to I wouldn't need to win this Powerball which I'm totally going to win anyway.
I'm more of the opinion that he needs to be hit less. A lot less. The best offensive line he's ever has was his rookie season. It only got worse.
I don't disagree about the line. Naybe it will make a difference. More to it then just that though and I am a TH fan
I'm all for bringing in more competition... but uh... Hell No to RG-ME. He's fragile both physically and emotionally and too damned ego-centric. Let's see if Logan Thomas can push Moore off the roster or actually challenge Tannehill under Gase and whether we actually draft someone like Coker in a later round to develop.
I like RG III as an option. Another thing worth considering is drafting a QB at the top of the 2nd round as competition/plan B. Someone like Christian Hackenberg has all of the measurables but has struggled to translate that into production. At worst, he would be a capable backup on the cheap. An outside the box option could be Mike Glennon. Again, the measurables are there, and he could potentially be a starter.
The only thing I have to say is that competition for Tannehill should not take priority over fixing the offensive line.
I agree I doubt Tannehill's problem has anything to do with work ethic. But competition in sports is something that creates new heights. The same reason why when I run 40 yards by myself with no one watching, I would run faster with someone timing it or someone racing me, etc. It is natural competitiveness that kicks our intensity levels up, even though we always want them up. It just doesn't matter. Competing is important in sports. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I am not opposed for drafting a low round QB to develop or signing a FA QB with untapped potential in the hopes that we may strike gold. And I do feel that competition helps everyone. But complacency will most likely never be a factor with him. Tannehill is by all accounts a "gym rat" a "football junkie" and is one of, if not THE hardest worker on the team.
There's no "maybe" it will make a difference. We have seen what Tannehill looked like with a healthy line, that gave decent protection. The main problem has always been the terrible oline. How are you supposed to really develop a QB, and have consistency, when the only consistent thing is how bad the line is? Now, if someone doesn't believe that he will be worth the money, even with better play if he has better blocking, that's a different story. But, IMO, there is no question that Tannehill plays better when he has average protection from his oline.
When he's pushed during must win games, he folds. I wouldn't want RGIII because of his skillset. RGIII seems to me like he wants to be a star instead of a good QB. I'd rather bring back the old Tampa Bay QB they brought in last year. He seems hungrier to make a team.
