The NFL is a QB driven league.

If you don't have a QB who can play at an elite level, you are most likely not going to any Super Bowls, and you are less likely to win any Super Bowls.

Unless you have a great defense and a consistent running game.

There are very few coaches and teams that have made it to the Super Bowl without an elite QB.

Lovie Smith is one of the few who have.

I like Ryan Tannehill. He is certainly not elite, he will rarely put the team on his shoulders and take a game away from his opponent. But he is certainly talented. He has improved every year. This season, his QB rating dropped, but we could all see with our naked eye that his deep ball, and chemistry with receivers was improved.

If you believe that Ryan Tannehill has any potential future with the Dolphins, you must bang the proverbial table for one of the few coaches to reach the Super Bowl in the last QB driven decade of the NFL without an elite QB. His name is Lovie Smith. The Bucs just fired him. And the Dolphins should hire him.

Mike Shanahan is a much better fit for us. He wanted Tannehill in the draft. He believes in him and would be able to run a system that focuses on his strengths as a quarterback. He's a guy who knows how to fix an offensive line, and his system suits Lamar Miller as well.

Ugh, Lovie is like the epitome of good not great. Would do him in the DC role in a heartbeat, but I don't have confidence in him as a head coach. Getting fired by the Bucs is not a good sign. It seems that the Super Bowl run was more a fluke or catching fire than something repeatable.

Yeah, may as well call up Brian Billick while we're at it.

Lol, well he did win the super bowl with Trent Dilfer as QB. That was a huge accomplishment.

My argument is purely based on the fact that we can rarely separate the great coaches from the great QBs, especially in this hyper QB driven Era.

Lovie made it to the Super Bowl with Rex ****ing Grossman. He therefore is one of the few coaches that I believe can actually coach their way to a championship.

You're not wrong. But while Billick was hired as an offensive guru who did nothing for his offense in Baltimore, at least Lovie built a formidable Super Bowl worthy defense.

The fins could do a lot worse than Lovie, imo.

Jamal Lewis was a beast..... but 2000 yards ? Billick did something for that offense.

I recall quite a bit of clamor about him here in years past. Some love for Lovie too. BB seems about as far gone as Cowher now though. Still I think it's a good point being made here, with all the talk about offensive guru's. Does Lovie still use the Tampa 2 ?

I've never seen a head coach or offensive coordinator get credit for an historical season by a RB. Those kinds of freakish seasons are usually credited to the RB themselves. That may be wrong, but we'd have to rewrite a lot of NFL history if it is.

I agree, but also have to give credit to the Oline, that group could run block quite well, but JL was a beast.

thats a very odd comparison...one guy just got fired and is in the league every year...billick is out of coaching for almost 15 years

I'm splitting hairs here, but Billick has been out of coaching for roughly half that time and Smith took a year off. It was not a serious suggestion and I was more so suggesting that they were comparable in terms of relevance (an exaggeration) and likelihood of catching that similar "lightning in a bottle", sort of speak.

Lovie Smith made it to the super bowl because of that defense. I want no part of him.

And he's a defensive coach, so he gets no love for the defense?

As a guy that lives in the Tampa market and is a big Jameis fan. I watched a large amount of Bucs games this year start to finish.

They played and are better then their record. With that roster at the beginning of the year, is nothing short of a miracle.

Lack of rah rah rubs some people the wrong way. And it's something I like my coach to have. But Lovie is a damn good coach. And a damn good guy.

If fans want to pick another coordinator and hope they'll win the coordinator lottery, that's fine.

We will get lucky eventually, and after Cam Cameron, Tony Sparano, and Joe Philbin we may actually be due.

Look at the NFL, name the head coaches who you consider to be very good or even great who DON'T have an elite QB.

I got Marvin Lewis, Gary Kubiak, and Andy Reid.

Maybe Bill O'Brien, Mike Zimmer, and Bruce Arians will join that list if they have success beyond a few years.

Lovie was 81-63 in 9 years with the Bears. 5 winning seasons, 3 division titles, and a Super Bowl berth. 5-11 his first year, and never worse than 7-9 in a very competitive division. When you go 10-6 and miss the playoffs because you are 3rd in your division, you are in a very competitive division.

    This was with QBs like
    Craig Krenzel
    Chad Hutchinson
    Jonathan Quinn
    Brian Griese
    Todd Collins
    Caleb Hanie
    Jason Campbell
    Josh McCown
    Kyle Orton
    Rex Grossman
    and finally Jay Cutler.

Lovie Smith may not be a genius, but he is a good head coach. And he is better than anything we've had in well over a decade.

My biggest concern with Lovie is whether he can put another good staff together just two years after building one in Tampa.

He struggled for years in Chicago with offensive coordinators, though he seemed to fix it in Tampa by hiring a guy so good it got him fired.

Rather take Shanahan, Coughlin, or Marrone over Lovie.
