Yea it definately seems to be a interesting concept to take and it's possibly going to be much more serious route sort of a Seal Team Six / Black Hawk Down type like movie but in Star Wars. Will be pretty cool to see a different perspective of Star Wars.
If they go by the books at all ( or even close) Han lives a long time. Well past other characters that i wont spoil.... *edit* i guess by saying that i am spoiling it as well.. Oh well.
Books are considered no longer cannon. Only Lucasfilms (Prequel, Main Movie) counts now. Along with Disney's new Star Wars Rebels is cannon.
Necro time Saw this last night, it is very good. You should make every attempt to try see it in Imax 3D if you can, one shot near the start is just unbelievably good in that format. Not going to spoil anything until more have seen it though but IMO (and the 10 others I know who have seen it) its very much exceeds what people were expecting and I cant way for the next one
I'm going tonight and I can't wait. I'm even more excited to take my son and daughter, but I have to see it once by myself just in case they don't make it through the whole movie since they are only 2 and 3 respectively.
My wife and I are hoping to get to go on the 26th. My sister in law has tentatively offered to watch our kids, so I'm crossing my fingers. We haven't had a date or gone out to see a movie since May, and both of us love Star Wars and don't want to miss it in the Cinema. Bizarrely, the big new local Regal Cinema nearest us isn't showing it due to some dispute, so we need to go to a different city to see it.
Wow what a great movie. Can't wait to see it again. Not gonna touch any of the spoilers as I know there are those who won't be able to resist looking and I don't want to ruin anyone's experience. This delivers what we all wanted from the prequels and didn't get.
Just got back from seeing the movie (had a vendor event at work). It was really good. I definitely enjoyed it. Like others, I won't spoil.
Going to see it Christmas Day...so glad y'all have enjoyed it so much. Can't tell you how much I've been waiting to see this with my kids. Thanks for no spoilers!
Just saw it. It's an an enjoyable movie. Abrams captured the essence of Star Wars better than Lucas did with the prequels. Sometimes you're too deep in the forest to see the trees. Or too busy paying attention to toy profits... I wouldn't call this a great movie... Enjoyable? Sure. Great? No. Mainly because of Abrams style. One of my biggest gripes w/Abrams in general, is his inability to make films that flow naturally. Abrams lacks subtlety. He's a hammer that just keeps banging away. Very little of his films feel organic. I find his style heavily manufactured. His characters always behave in an over the top manner, when it's inappropriate given the circumstances. Like they know they're in an action film and it's time to make a joke... You can almost hear the laugh and/or applause track being cued up. Think Kirk in Star Trek. Or Tony Stark. Marvel in general... I'm sure most people won't care, but a little subtlety would be nice... In TFA, I found Abram's habit of manufacturing interest to be particularly annoying with call backs to the original trilogy. I found myself being pulled out of the moment way too much, especially with a certain character who was reduced to a complete caricature (sadly). As far as the story itself goes, the biggest issue I have is with the villain. Great concept, poor execution. I was excited initially when the premise started to unfold, but it never really went anywhere. And the motivation for that character lacked any depth whatsoever. And it frankly doesn't make sense given the events of ROTJ. For me, it fell flat. Which is a damn shame given how juicy the situation was. I did enjoy the new protagonists. Daisy Ridley shows promise. I liked the way they handled a female lead. Too often movies w/female leads go out of their way to make the woman overly masculine, rather than developing the character as a person. Rey is very much built in the mold of Sigourney Weaver's "Ridley" (Alien). Rey reminded me of George RR Martin's response, when asked how he writes compelling and capable women. "I've just always thought of woman as people..." That sums up Rey pretty well. She's developed as a capable person, and gender never becomes an issue because the filmmakers/writers didn't make it one. Given Abram's style of beating you over the head, I was surprised he hit the mark so well. I also liked Finn, too, despite Abram's "manufacturing" his character too much at times I wish they went further with his backstory too, as he comes from an interesting world/circumstances. Prior to TPM, Storm troopers were very mysterious. Exploring that life and his thoughts during his time as a "bad guy" could of been really juicy material. The version we got was pretty generic and watered down. The little robot was good too. I was skeptical that they could create a new robot to rival R2D2 and C3PO, but they did it. Overall, enjoyable despite the flaws I perceived.
Absolutely outstanding movie. Thank god there is no more over the top, cartoonish animation and special effects. No more stupid childish gimmicks. The special effects were OUTSTANDING. I LOVED the air battles. The acting was top notch. I truly enjoyed Finn's character. I was honestly skeptical about his character, but was pleasantly surprised. This seems like Abram's warm up movie how he essentially followed the formula of the original trilogy. I think things will take its own the next movies. I am looking forward to the next movie.
Any Notorious BIG fans out there? There's an entire album of Star Wars Biggie remixes. Check out Dead Wrong to the main Empire theme. https://soundcloud.com/otaku-gang/sets/life-after-death-star
I saw it yesterday witih my wife. We both loved it. Outstanding work. I understand what CK said, but perhaps they will explore more of Fins back story again. I thought the copycat parts of the movie (i.e. garbage bin comment) were not necessary. Trying too hard to equal ep4.
I saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it. Certainly glad they made it and there is a lot of possibilities set up for the next two. Maybe a thread with spoilers to talk about it? Certainly don't want to ruin it.
why new thread theres a spoiler tag option available... thought it was pretty good. definitely better than the last 3...hopefully the next 2 are better. Spoiler wonder who Rey is related to
It was terrific. Wasn't the most original work ever but it hit the right notes. Daisy Ridley continued the JJ Abrams streak of casting unknown actresses who become stars
I loved it. Loved it, loved it, loved it! I think its funny how a lot of people are trying to distinguish a fun movie from a great movie. That movie was great because it was fun as heck. I was giddy the whole time. 2 hours of joy. Gimme more. Great movie. Can't wait till #8.
Damn that was awesome!! - saw it in IMAX with my 12 year old - great bonding experience, great theatre. having a subwoofer under each chair was a nice touch for the theater. - Daisy Ridley was awesome - supreme leader Snoke was pretty cool new big baddy -even BB8 was a nice evolution for droid-kind going back to see it with rest of my family tomorrow, but not in IMAX
Maybe because fun and great are mutually exclusive? If you think SW: TFA was both, cool. I wouldn't agree. For me, it's more the former and not the latter.
Saw it again with the kids today. Even at only 2 and 3 years old it held their attention and they loved it. It was my daughters first movie. She loved BB8. See George Lucas? You can add an element kids will like without ruining a movie. She loved him so much I got her a last minute "talking" bb8 plush for Christmas.
I saw it last night and it was really great. Now, I suppose I'm a rare breed who enjoyed and still enjoys Episodes 1-3 as movies on their own, but this one felt like a "real" Star Wars movie. My wife and I were talking about it, and who people were, and what we think happens in the next ones, the whole drive home.
I'd call it a good script for basically an intro to a new trilogy. It was fun as hell and the action sequences were very good. The new lead character - Rey - was very likable.
I guess different people can look at things differenty, but what would be a movie that was "great", and yet not any fun? Something really depressing but well made, I guess? For myself, I don't take trips to the cinema for that. When I go, I want to enjoy myself.
That was the one that came to mind. Obviously an important movie, but one that I only want to see once as well.
Fun and great are not mutually exclusive. That's such an odd thing to say. Don't take yourself and your entertainment so seriously.
No they aren't. Something can be fun and great. Mutually exclusive means something can't be X and also Y. Being a Dolphin player is mutually exclusive with being a player on any other NFL team.
I liked the movie a whole bunch. Since the prequels all it had to do was not suck, and it delivered. Felt like a Star Wars movie. I give it an 8/10. Episode VIII is out on March 2017, so let the wait begin. There is also a novelization available that helps fill in some story gaps from the film
I liked the movie a lot. It was a fun movie to watch. I hated that there is no depth to the movie and felt extremely rushed. I see this movie more as an "introduction" movie to the next 2 films that will be released.
