As Brian Billick aptly stated, "the NFL is a desperate man's sport." It is full of emotion and intensity. However, even these extreme emotions contain an obscene polarity. I'm alluding to the feaux outrage that this team seems to invoke. It's not logical, not in the slightest. The fan base has become so polarized, that it stays in a state of conflict whether we win or lose. It's not just us but almost every team that has these aspects. Yet, given the undeniable reality that we have fired our entire upper echelon of coaches, we still cling to this absurdist outrage that: -this defense sucks(despite showing itself quite capable in the week prior against a team that used to beat us up with swing passes to Ray Rice for nearly a decade) -our qb sucks (despite the avalanche of factors working against him) -our coaches suck (of course, they do, they're all first timers at their jobs) -our talent sucks (despite probably performing in the top third of all teams playing under an interim head coach) -our talent evaluators suck (despite having Philbin jettison players with obvious talent and being too reticent to play the youngest) -our owner sucks (guess what...he's obviously trying the best he can) The point is that the outrageous expectations this fanbase carries over from the offseason, despite the obvious crippling blows sustained early, are quite frankly absurd. It's always not good enough, never consistent enough, not talented enough, not coached well enough... They lost by seven!...freakin!...points! Just like every single fan outside our arrogant, spoiled little castle we call perfectville knew. Yet somehow we are still outraged!?! I know it's the goal to win it all, but I think the best thing that could happen is that the Carolina Panthers stay undefeated. So we can loose these fetters of unrealistic expectations that is anchored by this clinging to this false notion that we somehow are special or an entitled and historic franchise and start to cheer our team on again, win or lose. To enjoy all aspects of the game in proper context, clarity and perspective. After all...Any given Sunday.
Is this a joke?Go surf the boards in philly and tell me what you read there. They wanted andy reids head after going to 4 nfc championships.
Exactly. He obviously never reads any other teams forum. Because if he had, he would see that Dolphin fans are actually fairly tame in their complaints compared to fans of other teams. Especially when you consider that the Dolphins haven't had a single winning season since Ross became the majority owner in 2008. I have seen far more negative comments in recent years on the forums of teams who actually make the playoffs than on the Dolphin forum. The fact is many Dolphin fans have just grown to accept mediocrity. It appears they are far more frustrated at this point than they are mad. Heck, in 2014 when the Patriots had a slow start to the season, their fan forums were full of individuals who wanted Brady benched or in some cases traded. In comparison, Dolphin fans are puppy dogs compared to the fans in most NFL cities.
Outrageous expectations? A lot of people just anticipated having a winning season for once, far from outrageous, this pathetic excuse for a franchise couldn't even do that. As for Ross, 7 years as majority owner, 7 non-winning seasons, he is a failure, period.
Probally one of the most outlandish posts I have ever read.He acts like we are spoiled patriots fans that lost in the AFC championship.Give me a break. I am not asking for much but how about a winning season and wildcard game for a change.
I just want 1 superbowl before i die, so i can say my team was the best of the best, i dont think thats too much to ask for.
Yup, the Panthers are my other favorite team (a distant 2nd behind the Fins) and I'm still rooting for them to lose each week. Just once, thank you. Because the 1972 Fins were legendary, the only perfect season in major-league sports, and I don't see how you can be a Dolphins fan and not want to root for that legacy. Screw what others think- it's not our fault that our Fins are more special than their Cowboys or Patriots.
Unfortunately because of the mediocrity of this franchise for well over a decade, apathy is more the norm for many former fans. Fans who express anger at the organization do so because they care enough to want a better product on the field. Those who are apathetic, and that now seems to be the majority, expect mediocrity.
I used to get angry after a loss. Now it only takes a couple days to get over it Only 3 plays into the game and they screwed something up. Amazing how it happens time and time again.
Well mediocrity is all I've ever known. I'm 23. I know a lot of you saw Marino in his prime and maybe the 70s Dolphins but I haven't had that luxury. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I was extremely fortunate to be 22 when the Dolphins won their first SB. I then got to experience nearly three decades where they were a highly competitive team almost every year. While there were a few down years over that period of time, the Dolphins being a playoff team almost yearly was a given. I certainly respect you younger fans who have stuck with the team the past 15 years while the organization hasn't given you much to cheer about. Hopefully it will all turn around in the coming years and all you younger fans will get to experience the emotions of following a team that is one of the best in the NFL.
What's sad for me is that the Heat have overtaken the Dolphins as Miami's most popular sports franchise amongst young fans. I don't know many Fins fans my age. Even when I had season tickets there weren't many people my age there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I agree that is sad. It would be awesome to have season tickets and also be able to go when they are good
Same here. While the foundations of the OP's argument are weak, he has a point that outrage over sports in general is absurd. We have no control over it. But that's why it's called being a fan (fanatic), and not "reasonable observer".
Hahaha... even I was scrambling to put something positive down about Ross. He's complete comic relief.
Eh, you've got a point. I guess my rhetoric started so grandiose that I felt I needed some sort of ultimate climax. I was born in '72 and my grandfather resembled Don Shula. Translation, I'm pretty brainwashed about this team. I think I'm subconsciously trying to sabatoge my own fandom because logically speaking it is the craziest waste of time in my life. Yet, something deep down in me knows that they're going to have crazy success as soon as I leave (call it the ironic nightmare aspect of the third dimension). So I'm kinda caught between two worlds. Point is that since I've watched for so long, it's like I'm a high school english teacher grading papers when I read some of these knee jerk reaction posts. It pains me and gives me headaches.
