Heard they both started. How'd the rooks look? McCain was clearly targeted by the amount of tackles but that's all I can surmise from the individual stats.
That's impactful. If McCain can string together some solid starts that'd be huge for us. Phillips has to hold that spot down but i imagine he will. He seems to be making plays when the opportunity comes.
Yeah, both were mixed bags. They have work to do but there were plenty of times where they showed you why they were drafted. Talented young dudes.
mccain played good competitive ball, he was always close, footing was bad at times, but he competed..maybe best suited for the slot than the boundary..which has been talked about before. Phillips tipped his 5th ball in 4 games, this one became an int..
bobby looked pretty good at times, one play how he broke up a pass reminded me of grimes in terms of his technique. i really like what i have seen of phillips, i think he has a very bright future.
Yeah, McCain got beat a few times, but the field was soggy and highly favored the offense. So he had a hard day but was pretty good overall. And Phillips looked fairly solid as well; he didn't get to the QB a whole lot but he was involved with stuffing the run and assisting on tackles fairly often.
I think Phillips is further along at this point, which you would expect out of a 2nd rounder vs a 5th rounder. As others have stated, I think McCain is an improvement over Taylor and quite frankly I would rather see him get the reps as we are 3 years into the Taylor experiment and it's pretty clear that one isn't going to work. I think Phillips has the potential to be an impact player. If he doesn't get pressure, he has been great at batting balls down.
Great game by the entire defense yesterday. OV, Shelby, and Misi in particular, told y'all OV gonna get paaaaaaaaaaaaid!!! This defense is very young and talented, especially the front 4, some of our dumb a** fans don't get it, but our opponents do and that's all that really matters at the end of the day.
What young talent? What key players on defense will still be on their rookie contract next season? The defense is in a very bad spot IMO. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk
OV, Shelby, Suh, and Phillips just to start with (that's an entire defensive line fyi). Jenkins and Misi aren't bad, Reshad is a stud and McCain has potential. Try and keep up.
Contract wise we do have issues, but talent wise we got some pieces. Thanks to Ireland, many Dolfans simply can't admit the truth lol. Our opponents get it though, especially when OV consistently smokes possibly the best young LT in the game just a few weeks ago. Tape never lies.
Reshad Jones is 27. Money is 1 thing, but talent is not the issue on this defense in reality. Ask Lane Johnson. This D does have talent, many of our "fans" that say this team is devoid of talent are very wrong lol. And OV is 25 btw.
My issue with OV is what he pulled against the jags. That idiotic late hit handed the jags the game. If our defense found a way to pull through on that drive, it could have changed our season... Although philbin might still be here then, so that would suck too.
He's still a young stud and about to be a very rich man. If you don't get that yet, you will pretty soon. Great 3rd round pick, I f****** knew it.
I think in Phillips, if he lives up to his potential, he's the future at the 1-technique/shade nose tackle spot. He reminds of Linval Joseph a bit and hopefully he can play like that. Bobby McCain strikes me as more of a true slot CB at this time; he's shaky on the perimeter.
Yea McCain looks like a better fit for the slot. If we can get a couple of good DB's in next years draft and somehow keep OV and Shelby, this defense is only going to get better and better. We definitely have some great young pieces already in place to build around, we just need to find a way to keep them under contract.
Phillips now has 4 pass deflections in the last three games. He's getting some good push and is nimble and aware enough to get his arms up in the passing lane. I'm optimistic that he'll turn out to be a great player, especially beside Suh.
Suh had Phillips train with him back in Oregon last offseason. Hopefully that continues this offseason.
Jordan Phillips clearly has upside, but he needs a lot of work in the run game. He's really raw in terms of playing blocks.
Yes, they have talent. They don't have young talent. Young talent is ideal because it is cheaper than the market rate. OV isn't going to be young talent next year. The defense has been neglected in the draft, and its going to cause pain in the future. It isn't difficult to find talent, it is difficult to find talent below the market rate.
Miami needs to add young talent at LB and CB specifically, but I think you could certainly add DE as the top priority if you don't/can't re-sign Vernon and get Wake and Coples to restructure. This draft should/needs to be defense-heavy.
There may be as many as 3 first round linebackers available where we're picking right now. We desperately need a "quarterback of the defense" as cliché as that sounds.
IMO, the problem with the 1st round LBs for Miami is that 2 of the 3 (I'm assuming you mean Jaylon Smith, Myles Jack and Reggie Ragland) is that Smith and Jack play the same role that Jelani Jenkins plays. I don't think either of them have the goods to play MLB. Perhaps if we see Jim Schwartz brought in, you could see one of them drafted to play his SAM LB spot, which he's had multiple smallish LBs filling that role in the past - Keith Bulluck, David Thornton, Ashlee Palmer, Nigel Bradham for a time, and Keith Rivers. I think it boils down to the main fit being Reggie Ragland to play MLB. I'm not against that as Ragland's really good. He's not the quickest guy, but his Football IQ seems like it's very high just based on how aware he is while in coverage and the angles he takes. He's the anti-Kelvin Sheppard in that regard. Ragland doesn't waste many steps and he makes up for a lack of speed by diagnosing plays very, very quickly. Depending on where Miami lands, my draft board looks something like this as of now: Vernon Hargreaves - high 1st Shaq Lawson - high 1st Jalen Ramsey - high 1st Mackensie Alexander - mid-high 1st Emmanuel Ogbah - mid-high 1st Reggie Ragland - mid 1st Kenny Clark - mid 1st By high I mean picking in the top 5 to top 10, and by mid I mean 11-20. I almost think the pick has to be a defensive player, so I didn't include any offensive prospects.
Of the prospects I listed, I REALLY like Hargreaves, Ogbah and Ragland. Kenny Clark is fantastic as well, but Miami already has Suh. I'd be perfectly happy with any of the 7 players though. All are good.
The more this season goes on the more I think we need to target one of those linebackers in the 1st round. Our current group outside of Jenkins is horrid. I think there are some really, really good value corners available on the free agent market this year. We really need a stud playing behind the line. Run defense is our biggest problem and IMO that is because of two things. Scheme and LB play. Both can and should be addressed in the offseason.
McCain was looking mad Jamar Taylorish when he gave up that TD in the 1st qtr that got called back on a HORRIBLE offensive PI call
Jordan Phillips has deflected a pass in the last 3 games, maybe 4. The one yesterday resulted in an INT, and I'm pretty sure or the others have as well. I like what he's been doing. Its obvious he's pretty raw still, but there's tons of talent there. If only Kacy Rogers was still here to be working with him on that. Bobby yesterday... I don't know... looked like he made some plays, looked like he got beat sometimes too. I didn't really pay much attention to him.
I'd say it probably comes down to what happens with Olivier Vernon being re-signed or not, as well as Quinton Coples and Cameron Wake restructuring. If two of those three aren't back, then I think Ogbah is the pick. If you can bring back OV with Coples and Wake restructuring (what I'm personally leaning toward at this point) then I think Ragland becomes more central on the radar.
I guess the Dolphins passing offense didn't get the memo about a soggy field favoring them. Because passing for less than 90 yards and scoring only 8 points on offense in those conditions certainly didn't seem to benefit Tannehill or his receivers yesterday.
Phillips size is so exciting. If Suh keeps working with him the skies the limit really. His knock was motor in college I believe, something we haven't had to worry about yet. Idk if we will ever with Suh right next to him though.
Thread took longer than I thought to become a Tannehill thread. Proceed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Believe you're correct. May have had two in multiple games. I was just trying to get the point across he's had an impact in the last several. He appears to be getting more playing time, and having more of an impact. There's definitely a big arrow, pointing upwards with this kid IMO. Needs some work, and some coaching up, but he's got a really good chance to be a really good player.
