Cowher won a lot of games with no QB, actually took a team to multiple AFC championships and the SB without a QB, and as soon as he got a QB he won a SB, Parcells, who I've always hated, won SBs with 2 different so so QBs, and rebuilt a couple other teams, and Madden had 7 championship games and a SB victory in 10 years.

I think Shula's career was extended by almost a decade by Marino.

I'm not saying you should put them ahead of Shula, just giving a couple reasons why I do.

Where is the proof? Why are 31 teams standing by getting whooped while the Patriots steal their signals? It's the silliest thing I've ever read. 31 teams, worth $60 billion+, do nothing while Bill Belichick steals their signals.

It's not about stealing signals, it is about the moral implications. It was stealing signals 7 years ago, deflating balls a year ago, and who knows what now. As a fan, I should not have to try to decipher the advantage gained from cheating. Cheating should be a disqualifier.

Every team looks for advantages... Even zack thomas has once said about getting audio tape to learn signals before... There is a shadyness behind belichick tho but his resume is still undeniable, hes a top five coach.

Shula also went to the super bowl with so so QBs, Woodley and Morrall (twice). Cowher has a good winning percentage but still considerably lower than shulas. Parcells certainly has a good resume with his rebuild jobs and Super Bowls, but I don't think it's quite at shulas level. His winning percentage is also 100 points lower than shulas. Simms was not exactly so so, and probably was about as good as Griese.

Madden had a terrific run, no doubt and a great winning %. However, he basically rode 1 team. Imagine if Shula retired in 1974, what his resume would have been, coached in 4 of 8 Super Bowls, perfect season, ungodly winning %. I don't think madden has the longevity to be considered.

    Cheers!

But it was proven the violation 7 years ago wasn't the video taping, because a lot of teams were video taping. 7 years ago BB was punished because the NFL told teams to stop videotaping and BB trying to be a lawyer thought he had a loophole. He didn't, got caught, got punished, and that was that.

But other than the video tapes what other hard evidence is there. Deflating footballs? That wasn't even proven yet. The science behind that is so bunk. An NFL official measured the intercepted ball (by Jackson) 3 times with the exact same gauge, and measured 3 different readings with a variance of 0.4. That's huge variation with the same gauge and same football. And what does exponent do? Oh we're not going to include that. It's silly.

Well until you have proof that he steals so much of the defensive plays that they can A) almost never make a critical error and B)...plug and play players and not miss a step, then Ill leave him at the top.

Shula ran the sprinklers on the field over night to slow down the opposing teams offense the next day.

I mean if we are gonna yell about cheating....that's cheating.

The problem with the cheating argument IMO, is that I firmly believe every team does things to gain a competitive advantage. Extra stickem...Pam sprayed on the Jerseys...all the kind of stuff that I would put in the category of spit balls, and juiced bats. I mean George Brett was ejected for the Pine Tar incident which was in fact, cheating.

Trying to say Belichick is a cheater, means you are somehow going to be able to sift through all the gray area as to what is cheating and what is not. If you are fully prepared to say ...doing anything that is outside the lines of the rule book is cheating...then you better be ready for when it comes back on your team.

Don Shula, by a country mile. Forget a moment that he coached the greatest team in NFL history. He coached through 3 eras of the NFL, with two different teams, a countless change of players and still averaged over 10 wins per season. You will never, ever, EVER see that again.

If it weren't for an incredible stretch of a Buffalo Bills team, he could have seen the SB another time or two.

Exactly. Time to take down Walsh, Rice and Montana then. Rice we all know used stickum. Now Montana admits this:

I have no idea what BB thought. That is my point here - as a fan, I shouldn't have to decipher what BB's real intent was. If you're argument is that a lot of other teams cheated, that doesn't change my position.

Other than the video tapes we have the deflation of footballs, which the Patriots have been punished for. We also have a myriad of accusations from teams, ranging from tampering with communication devices to bugging lockerrooms to spying on walkthroughs. Certainly we shouldn't take these accusations as truth, but its hard to believe that so many people within the NFL would fabricate such stories. As a fan, I'm not going to hold everything to a standard of reasonable doubt.

I don't disagree with any of your overall points, but the fact is Morrall played out of his mind in 1968. He was the league MVP, and he deserved it. Here's an overview of his career noting that his 1968 season was arguably the best season by a 34-year-old quarterback in the history of the NFL.

    http://www.footballperspective.com/remembering-earl-morrall/

Unfortunately, he was pretty much the Jets' MVP in the Super Bowl.

He was terrific in 1972 also. He mostly handed off, but when he was called on to throw he was very effective. He's also the answer to a good trivia question: who had the longest rushing touchdown for Miami in 1972? But he was shaky in the playoffs, and Shula benched him at halftime in the AFC championship.

As much as I hate to agree, I just have to. Bellichicken is, IMHO, the greatest ever. He'll win with Homer Simpson at QB and Fred Flinstone at WR.

This. Shula had 17 years to develop a good running game and a good enough defense at the same time. For all he did in the 70s, that sticks out as a huge negative. He also kept Olivadotti around way too long.

And we probably won't know about most of it until they both retire.
