Other than Beck, who have we drafted in the past 20 years that would qualify as such? Henne and Tannehill were both expected to be starters by year two.
Tannehill was drafted as a project. 100% of analyst and even a multitude of NFL gm's said as much. he started year 1 for us btw...........
Well, I know that he's started every game, of course. I suppose my definition of a project is different and we didn't understand one another. I expected that RT would sit the bench in 2012, but would have been really, really disapointed had he not been the starter by 2013. I look at a project as a guy who you take in the middle rounds with the hope that he's eventually ready to take over, but with no real expectations. A guy who's as likely to be a career backup or wash out as he is to become a long term starter.
and that was the debate amongst all the people that supposedly know things. do you draft someone in the first round knowing they aren't a first round talent for a few years, but has the glimpses of being a franchise QB.
Well, raw for sure. I don't know that his ceiling was perceived as being all that high. The pick was perceived as a big reach by a team that was desperate for a quarterback. This article does a good job of collecting all the "reach" comments from back when the pick was made. http://www.thephinsider.com/2015/9/2/9242731/2012-nfl-draft-ryan-tannehill-a-reach-among-draft-busts Of course, it also points out that, compared to others in the top 8 that year, Tannehill hasn't done too badly.
I'm half kidding when I say that this franchise would be in just as good a, if not better shape than it is today, had you personally been running it for the past 10 years. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I thought that comment was made in reference to Trent Green? He went on after that to have two 3,500+ yard and three 4,000+ yard seasons. We signed him much later on but by that time his career was just about over due to concussions.
i been pretty good overall i wanted matt ryan over jake long i wanted vontae davis, we got vontae davis, then we got philbin, goodbye vontae davis i wanted sergio kindle over jared odrick, sergio proceeded to fall down a staircase during the offseason, crack his skull, and never regained his preinjury form i wanted mike pouncey, we got mike pouncey, then we got philbin, somehow we still have pouncey i wasnt crazy about tannehill but that was the year Jetsuck died and i wanted us to draft a QB for Jetsuck so Tannehill was the choice once we traded up i wanted lane johnson. we got dion jordan. before we traded up i wanted to trade down. at 12 i wouldve drafted justin pugh. i wanted cj mosely but he was gone by the time we drafted. i was good with juwan james as the pick. i wanted cyrus kouwandijio in the 2nd but he was gone again by the time we picked last year i wanted bud dupree or an offensive lineman. dupree is playing well but i expect him to really shine next year but the biggest bust of all for me was phillip merling. he had everything but was a horrible fit for what parcells wanted him to become. once he put on weight he was never the same. the speed and burst were gone
I wanted Jake Long over Matt Ryan... Looked like a good call early Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I was high on John Beck, I even changed my nick in "Quarterbeck". Oops. I also thought Culpepper would help us. And I believed Cecil the Diesel would run over Defenses - instead he ran through a Windows to watch a women... On the other side I was right on Landry and Jones to become Superstars - they haven't even reached their Peak.
Me too. I thought we were drafting him as a versatile OLB/DE, who could drop back and cover Gronk or rush the passer with equal ease. In mitigation, when I heard him speak regularly, I realised he probably wasn't the second coming of JT, but by that point I was already sold.
I was really happy when it was announced that Saban was coming to town to coach, and that we were getting Daunte Culpepper for our qb. Almost ten years later, I think it's safe to say that the Crimson Tide fans are a lot happier Saban has been their coach than we ever were.
Ya, so far I'm wrong about Wallace too ....... but watching their games, there's not much he can do about it. They're very run-heavy and Teddy B seems to be a bit of square peg in round hole with Turner's vertical offense. I thought I'd be seeing a ton of play-action and Wallace singled up with safeties. Hell look at the receiving core as a whole ..... even Charles Johnson is nowhere to be found. Only guy who's done anything is Diggs and even he has been quiet the last few weeks. Gurley was also one I was wrong about. I thought it would be an absolute waste to draft him and that you'd get very few games out of him this year.
What was the mistake with Sean Smith? My mistake was I hated him and had no problem with him leaving.. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I haven't watched any Minny games, but I thought Teddy was a better deep ball thrower so I just added 2+2, but that hasn't transpired, except in the preseason they hooked up once, lol. I had the same thought on Gurley, this year was a waste, but I'm still glad we didn't draft him. Another thing I was wrong about was the Fins drafting an OG in the 2nd round, but perhaps I wasn't the one who was wrong thinking, because they should have drafted one in the 2nd, lol.
Never wanted Shula to retire. We were perennial contenders with him Thought Jimmy Johnson was a great replacement Never liked Wannstadt Liked getting Ricky Williams Liked Jay Fiedler Wanted Brees over Culpepper and knowing that's what Saban wanted, I can cut him some slack Was leery about Parcells, never stayed in one place for very long Sparano was in over his head which did nothing but hurt Henne's development Philbin isn't a head coach; he's an OC Bill Lazor sucks I like Dan Campbell, but from what I've seen thus far, he won't be the answer. The answer is finding the next Shula, Levy, Noll or Cowher...a former player is knows what the players endure, a tactical football genius with the strength and leadership skills to control and motivate the players we have
I didn't think he was going to be as effective as he has been. And for the record, I don't think you were wrong about your 1st two things, Shula was done, great coach but he was done, in a decade he never fixed the problems, the same problems we had when we drafted Dan were the same problems we had when Shula retired, and Shula's final game goes down as the most embarrassing game imo, 340 something yards rushing allowed to the Bills in a playoff game, and T Thomas among others after the game commenting that "we just kept running the same play, waiting for them to adjust, they just never did", I felt absolutely horrible after that game. JJ wasn't just widely considered to be the best coach in the NFL at the time, it was pretty much a universal thought, his last coached game was a SB victory, and just 2 weeks prior to us signing him the team that he built won it's 3rd SB, and lets not forget that everyone and their mothers KNEW that JJ was just waiting for his dream job in Miami, there was no way anyone of us could know that he was basically done with football already in his heart, so he was by far, and it's not even close, the best choice at the time. It didn't really work out with JJ, but it was the right choice, even if it didn't work, to use an analogy, if a person has 2 paths he can take, 1 is a 25% chance of success and the other is a 75% chance and that is the choice you take but still fail, it was still the right choice. just imo.
If the idea is to be admitting you were wrong, you shouldn't say "with the right coaching and scheme."
I thought Lamar Gordon would be good. I thought Daunte Culpepper would be great. I thought Nick Saban would be one of the league's best coaches. I thought Ted Ginn, Jr. would develop into a good WR.
Lol... The reasons you stated about Shula were exactly the same feelings I had, even down to the Thurman Thomas quote. I guess It was a no brainier to be excited about JJ. Sadly, as much as I was ready to move on from Shula, it has never really been the same as a fan since he left. One more mistake I remembered making right before JJ took over. I actually uttered the words out loud... "What do fans of other teams think when their teams never make or win a playoff game over a long period of Time?" I put the "malocchio" on this franchise.. It was me! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
"Potential ceiling" or "desperation," as you prefer. The Fins felt they really needed a quarterback and the best prospects (Luck and RGIII) were gone. But, back in 2012, a lot of people thought he wasn't worth a first-round pick. Certainly not the #8 overall.
I thought I was wrong once also but but when he came back from pot rehab he ran like mad. Edited: 12 times by profile user.
I hated the Chad Henne pick and wanted to keep John Beck around. But in that case, everybody was wrong. Figured Jason Allen would kick *** once they stopped jerking his position. Chris Chambers didn't have a drop problem.
I believe Henne did get kinda screwed by coaching staff. He was scared to throw the ball anywhere they way they drilled no turnovers to him.
He definitely would be a huge upgrade on what we have now... And Davis is a top corner in the league...imagine how much better we would be. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I disagree. They both needed to go. Just because they've played better elsewhere doesn't mean that they would have here.
You are not alone my friend in putting the jinx on, i said those very same things, while at the same time saying, "glad I root for a team that will never happen to", wowzaroony right, I need to borrow that car from Marty McFly go back and smack myself...hard...
Umm, no. They both needed better coaching and Philbin wasn't it. Good players don't need to go. And Vontae is GREAT. Bill Belichick takes "problem" players and all of a sudden they're not a problem anymore, or they get cut. And those who get cut don't go on to kick *** anywhere else.
Thats great, but the Hoodie isn't our coach. The guys who can do that are rare. Players who would fail at all other 31 teams go to New England and become Pro Bowlers or turn their careers around. I wish that we had a coach who was even in the discussion of the 10 best in the league, but we haven't this century. Gotta work with what we have, and IMO, paying either of those guys top dollar would have only led to more underachieving.
But these two (Davis and Smith) aren't being coached by Hoodie right now either. The solution should have been, keep the good players get rid of crappy coach.
