Tannehill and Suh contracts won't handcuff us like most people thought they would. They were designed with flexibility for these reasons. I think Wake will be restructured. Grimes too, though I think it's possible he may not be brought back at all. Cameron doesn't seem to be a good fit here. Jennings and Mitchell seem like no-brainier cuts. I think we'll move on from Misi too. I think re-signing Miller needs to be a priority. Other than that, as Barry said, we need to make sure we make the right decisions on who we bring in. That's what will be most important.
Wake is a liability now. Should have found a suitor when his value was high. Cut him loose. Let Miller test the market. If he comes back sign him. If he walks no worries really.
Wake is a liability? His play is or his contract? When he was fit this season he was a machine. His contract is totally acceptable for a top 3 DE. So he got injured. Nobody predicts injuries. You'd want to have traded our best player when? 2 years ago? 1 year ago? This off season? 1 hour before he hurt himself? Total guesswork. If ever a play deserved some loyalty. We picked him up and he's been an excellent player and an absolute model pro for every other player on this team.
Sure he is great getting after the QB but Wake has struggled against the run the past two seasons. That is a big reason why Shelby replaces him on run situations. Our star is getting old folks. Father time is undefeated. I love Cameron Wake. He's been an absolute QB killer but guess what? He is due 8 mill. Time to move on.
I doubt all this happens. I don't think you want to push all that signing bonus into the future to free up 50-70 miliion. definitely need to cut Jennings, Mitchell, restructure the Suh deal. restructure Grimes an Wake. I would definitely restructure Jordan Cameron, but with the aim to keep him.
The article leaves out the dead money that would/will come from cutting certain players, though. Heres a quick rundown: Wake: 8.4 mil savings, 1.4 dead money Cameron: 7.5, 2.0 Grimes: 6.5, 3.0 Jennings: 4.0, 1.5 Misi: 3.7, 1.1 Mitchell: 2.5, 1.0 Br. McCain: 2.5, 1.0 Fox: 1.4, 0.2 Plus the case of Dion Jordan, which is still a bit of a mystery. We'd save 3.2 by cuttting him, but it still seems unclear if we'd take a hit or not. Not factoring in Jordan, we would save a gross of 36.5 million by cutting all of the listed players after the season, but also take a dead money hit of 15.4 million, leaving a net savings of about 21 million. My feeling is that Jennings, Mitchell, Fox and McCain are gone. Grimes likely stays around for one more year, both out of need and because he has a more managable cap hit the following season. The rest likely depend on who the new coach is.
Yeah that's a lot of dead $$ but B.Jackson did mention the"$11 million in carryover space" for the "projected $150 million 2016 cap" so we would be in better shape.
Restructuring Suh as Jackson suggests is idiotic, it would tie the team to him, he wouldn't even be tradable, his yearly prorated bonus would be like 8 mil, as it is right now he's tradable now and cutable in a couple years, leave it at that. Doing the same to Tanne is even more idiotic, his contract was structured so that it would be easy to cut ties next year, restructure and your making it more expensive, it would be undermining their own logic. These would be 2 really stupid, "cut your nose to spite your face" moves, Jackson sounds like a dead money gremlin, trying to kill the Fins with dead money so they can make their annual FA splash that usually ends up biting them in the @ss, with even more dead money issues. Space can be created by getting rid of players that we don't need, but building through the draft is still the way to go, pay the young players that are good that are home grown players, build a core, work from there instead of paying too much for players that haven't played here and ultimately never live up to the hype. How about finally being football smart and building a team the right way, instead of tripping over straw reaching for the stars, after years of chasing FAs, look where that's gotten us.
I would like to see Wake stay. See how his rehab goes and take it from there.I think he should retire a Dolphin. Mitchell probably should go unless he wants to play for peanuts. Without Grimes who do we have? Noone wants to step up. To many holes to fill to get rid of everyone. I understand Danimal wants to win games to keep his job but maybe he should try George Costanza"s "reverse theory". Play the young guys and see how they fare.
I think Mitchell needs to go. He's progressively gotten worse and is a liability at this point. Cameron I'm on the fence. I had some high expectations for him and thought he would be a much bigger factor in the red zone. He's just disappeared. If his play doesn't improve, you cut him and move on. Greg Jennings is a no brainer. We have too many talented receivers and you can't pay a #4/5 receiver that much money. I'm all for restructuring Grimes and Wake. When healthy, they are good football players. They may not have a lot of years left in the tank but at least can transition through a rebuild. I'm on board with doing that with Pouncey. Tannehill, I think we stick with his contact and have the ability to move on if he doesn't step up his play by end of next year. That's $25-30mm to start bringing in some solid starters. I really don't want to see us break the bank on a big name free agent. It's pretty clear that we are not 1 or 2 or even 3 players away. We need to start drafting better, make smarter FA moves and manage our cap so we can be a playoff contender in 2-3 years. I don't think you can turn over part of your roster while trying to improve 6-8 positions that are huge holes in your current roster in 1 season.
This team has a lot of holes to fill, but retaining two older injury prone veterans, Wake and Grimes, will not help us win in 2016. I'm fond of those guys, but I can't relate to the sentimentality for Wake -- we've sucked during his time here. There are no good times to look back fondly on. Guards, and especially linebackers don't seem to mean much to this organization lately so, who cares how much we have to spend on yet another crop of high dollar free agents. We landed the top FA prize three years running now (Wallace, Albert, Suh), and next draft we're picking top 10. Yay!
As a fan I would be adamantly opposed to turning Suh and/or Tannehill's base salary into signing bonus...It would be one thing if it was done for the purpose of keeping a Super Bowl type team together in order to sign players from leaving or to be able to sign a couple of free agents b/c they are the missing pieces from a playoff team to becoming a Super Bowl team...but doing so with the team we have now would just be bad business.
This sentimentality is annoying. It's not how you build football teams. I don't care if it hurts your feeling, dude. The writing was on the wall 2-3 years ago and people justifiably starting discussing Wake's value. That's called instinct. When you sense a player is about to start his decline it's a smart fan who recognizes the value in moving on. Over the last couple years Wake has done exactly what some of us predicted 2-3 years ago, he's begun to decline. He's been getting weaker against the run and erased more regularly when facing good (and sometimes not so good) RTs. Coming into this season, Miami had a player who's value was nothing more than a late round pick (see Jared Allen trade) and ow he's had a devastating injury that will affect his future production which means his value is non-existent. Miami had a chance to do the right thing. Instead they let guys like Vontae Davis go when they should've been doing it with the older vets like Wake. Fans can be wrong about this stuff. It doesn't matter. When the team is wrong though, it has real implications.
I like every move they mentioned aside from restructuring Tannehill. If that negatively affects Miami's being able to move away from Tannehill after next year, the team shouldn't do it. The team really needs to have that option available to them. By contrast, there are worse things than being tied to Ndamukong Suh. Miami can build a defense around him. He's consistently ranked highly, even now while the defense is playing badly. We know that Suh is a dominant player. We don't know that about Tannehill, for instance. With Suh, you have an elite player who isn't too old and who has little history of injury. There's nothing wrong with that. The price is high because the production is high. That's not unfair. As far as Wake, Grimes, Mitchell and Misi...lose 'em all. They are of very little value at this point. Wake and Grimes are too expensive while Misi and Mitchell aren't good enough. Cameron is under-appreciated. He's no less a fit than any other good TE would be. The problem is not him, it's the offense and the QB. Still, if the production doesn't match the cost, then Miami is forced to let him go.
Look, I'm in favor of moving on from Wake. I was before the season started. But that's not cool to tell him that his feelings are annoying. We're all fans, man, not coaches or front office people, and being a fan is about passion and love.
I look at Suggs in Baltimore who suffered the same type of injury as Wake a few years ago and then again this year. They are both the same age at this time and Suggs never was the same dominant player after he returned from this type injury the first time. Wake was already playing a lot less this year because of his hamstring injury and because of his perceived weakness against the run. Wake has been the best player on defense for the Dolphins the past several years, but because of age and injuries, he is no longer worth the huge contract he is signed for next year. If he is willing to take far less money to return next year, I can see the Dolphins bringing him back. If he still wants to get paid like one of the top DE's in the NFL, I just don't see a rebuilding Dolphin team paying him that type money.
But knowing we have a bad defense, with Suh on it, doesn't give you pause? We can suck on D without Suh, that contract is the worst thing going on this team, he should be traded if possible this offseason imo.
He has a huge contract, but if he plays like he did today, he's earning that contract with his play. Worst thing you can do IMO is to trade a great player in his prime instead of building around him.
cbrad nailed it Finster. This kind of reminds of me Randy Moss in Oakland. Did the production go down? Yes. Did the motivation go down? Yes. However, Moss's potential to dominate didn't disappear when he went to the Raiders which is why when Moss became a Patriot he magically became great again. The talent was still there. It was just being wasted in Oakland and to be fair Moss didn't work as hard as he should have. Suh is in a similar position. He signed on with a team I'm sure he thought had a legit chance to be something only to find the HC had no idea what he was doing, the OC and the QB had major question marks and the defensive roster was weak. Suh's potential to dominate has not changed. He's still a guy you can build around. He's still the same guy he's been over the last few years. The only thing the Dolphins suckage tells us is that having 1 or 2 great players does not a great defense make.
I took his series of semi-sarcastic questions to be kind of snarky. I think pretty much everyone except the homers knows that trading Wake a season or two ago would've been the thing to do. It's fine to be a fan-boy. It's not fine to be a snarky fan-boy.
On the 1st TD for Philly, they ran right at Suh, and Klein? blocked him out of the play 1 on 1 for an easy TD, so I don't agree with you that he's worth it, not buy a long shot imo.
Really? No player is dominant at all times. Suh had a sack, a bunch of pressures, multiple tackles for loss, etc.. You really can't expect a DL to play much better, especially since he's starting to become consistent at this in Miami. No, you gotta keep players like that and build around them, even if the salary is massive. I'd agree with you if Suh's salary is the reason we can't build a great defense, but I think that's a long-shot argument.

so let's see here, Jennings and Cameron are basically not doing anything for us this season, they're def cut. Grimes and wake, I love them both. They gave us their best and they deserve better...but we can't justify paying them at their age at their positions at their salaries. I don't see how Misi stays at that salary either. He's not terrible...he's just not good. This a well timed article given that we won today without any of those guys basically. we got a glimpse of our future today. Suh was beast, the young CBs played. If we could allocate the money going to wake and grimes into a stud LB or safety, and actually draft someone in the first round who can play his first year...at all...we could build a real defense
I'm fine with Wake and Grimes coming back on discount contracts, but if we can shed salary to improve the defense i'm all for it. We definitely need to build this around Suh. Yes he has a fat contract. But in my opinion He's earning it and only getting better. I think Hewitt is a gem, I think Hull can add depth, Vigil, Fede, Shelby....all nice pieces on the defense that can provide depth. Lippett and Bobby Mac have finally got on the field, I want to see more of them. Our defense is quite young which is rather exciting. Not all of these guys are gonna be stars, but expect a few to rise up and become starters. Just need a good draft, and to make smart moves in free agency.
There was talk over the summer when he was suspended that we may be able to get out of that. I haven't heard anything since.
Not really, nothing that special about Lamar Miller. I wouldn't pay him. I'm a firm believer that the OL dictates how a RB will do on any given day. They could literally move Ajayi into featured back mode and I dont think we'd lose much.
You would have to put a lot of hope he doesn't get hurt again. I think it best to work him in. Miller is a very underrated RB in the NFL. Gannon said during the game yesterday, Miller was one of teh best RBs no one is talking about. He is definitely a keeper.
Miller is really good. Both as a runner and a receiver. I'm not sure why some people refuse to believe that.
