Not me! New to the series, and I tend to struggle early in games that I'm unfamiliar with. Skyrim and The Witcher 3 both kicked my butt for a while. Normal mode all the way.

Not sure if serious lol. It is 2015, so why am I picturing an old school movie with a spy taking photos of a file with a mini camera?

Just DL the PDF from torrents. Both are considered theft anyway.

    LOL

I enjoy "real" books, that I can hold in my hands and feel the paper. I read the guides for enjoyment as much as info. Maybe moreso these days. I sort of collect them too. I have some dating back to the 90s lined up on a shelf.

I'm not sure where you live, but i'm sure Best Buy, GameStop etc in your city has plenty of copies. That's one thing we had more than enough of haha

Wal-Mart had no copies of the guide, either regular or collectors, when I got there at 9am to buy the game this morning. Apparently there was a big demand even out in the middle of nowhere where I live. I got the next to last PS4 copy that they had in stock. Headed "to town" tomorrow, so I'll stop into Best Buy and pick one up while I'm there. I'll probably spend half my time with the game tonight on creating my character after my kids go to bed anyways

Also, spent all day at work looking at perks. I think I am going with this -

    S - 3
    P - 4
    E - 3
    C - 6
    I - 6
    A - 2
    L - 4

kind of balanced, for my first playthrough don't want to go too one sided. I can probably go with strength as low as 1, but I pick up EVERYTHING to sell, hate not being able to carry a lot will be a pain in the ***.

Low agility because I won't rely as much on VATS this go around, seeing how the combat system isn't terrible as it has been previously.

I found this article at IGN useful regarding character creation. I'm definately going to go with something along the lines of their Crafter template, since that's how I usually play RPGs. Might even drop the luck down to 1 to live up to my rep :shifty:

Perk Chart helps to help you plan out your build as well.

    Yup. That's what I used.
Now, I imagine that SPECIAL also gives you base stats. Strength for carrying, and physical damage, agility for some action points etc. I haven't confirmed it, but it only makes sense.

Played about 3 hours in. Had to stop for various reasons, none of which are game related. Impressions below. I'm not spoiler tagging anything because everything I'm talking about was in the marketing material for the game.

I appreciate the aiming changes made to make this feel more like an FPS. Bullets no longer alter trajectory based on your stats. They'll go exactly where you aim.

Getting power armor early on was cool, but they don't tell you when to take it off, so you just sort of run out the power core until you realize you have to take it off. I'm terrified of the power armor vanishing after 3 days.

The map looks small but feels bigger as you traverse. I still don't understand this game's scale yet.

You get some nice loot early on, but have nowhere to sell it within range. Bad design.

Do you know if SPECIAL gives base stats? 1 S vs 2 for example for more carrying capacity, etc?

I played for about three hours, and am guessing that I didn't quite get as far as Desides, but almost there. Found a good place to save.

Without spoiling anything either, I found it to be very challenging. Most of the time, I haven't known where enemies are, or even that I'm being attacked, until it happens. I understand the whole deal with the pip boy, but I wish that the menu system was a little easier to navigate, and that there were pictures of items. I'm very clumbsily figuring out things as I go. I'm grateful to have the background of Skyrim to act as a sort of guide as to how things work, otherwise I'd be even more lost.

Playing on Normal mode as well:

    S 4
    P 4
    E 4
    C 6
    I 6
    A 2
    L 2

EDIT: After sleeping on it, and then really looking over the perks chart after getting up this morning, I'm really happy with my choices for SPECIAL. I think that it will suit my style really well. Now the hard part is choosing which perks to go after first. I chose VANS and toughness for my first two.

Yes, that's how it works. If you have more strength, then you have a higher carrying limit. There are primary and secondary benefits to each stat.

Just curious, why you went with agility as your 2nd best skill, for the vats? And what was your starting carry capacity with starting 1 strength?

I probably made my guy too balanced to be very S.P.E.C.I.A.L.

    S - 3
    P - 5
    E - 4
    C - 4
    I - 5
    A - 3
    L - 4

The AGI tree perks are great for combat.

I went with 1 STR because the STR tree perks are generally useless to me. I don't play melee or heavy weapons builds. The weapon bash feature is nice in a pinch though.

I did base it on perks somewhat.

    I think I'm going to redo it as S-3, P-4, E-2, C-6, I-6, A-5, L-2.

Same here, but I don't want to have minimum carrying capacity. What's your carry cap with 1 str?

Gotcha, i'm assuming helps when you wearing STR gear.

I see you went with the high Charisma build, are you getting in settlement building off the bat or going to hold off on that?

I'm trying to get the settlement going early. One of the first side quests involves expanding your settlement's reputation by fighting a gang of raiders. I want to do it, but I also want the loot, and have nowhere to sell my stuff early on. I'm trying to make it to Diamond City but the routes are all dangerous.

I don't have any merchants to sell to yet and I'm already at my max carrying weight from events in Concord.

So if you guys know of any merchants in the upper left corner of the map, I'm all ears.

Thanks again. Highly useful. I read the beginning, but only skimmed the latter parts to avoid spoilers. This is a part of the game that I'm really excited to dig into. Depending on what I stumble into when I start the game again tonight, I'm panning on going back to the starting point areas and seeing what I can do for practice.

Finally found a merchant in the upper left corner of the map. There's a diner on the road leading south out of Concord. Resolve the stand-off and the diner opens up as a general store.
