After the Patriots game: Cut Damien Williams Move Ajayi in his place Sign a back from the practice squad Make him inactive vs the Bills So good idea, bad idea?
while I agree that promoting Ajayi over Williams makes sense, why cut Williams rather than just demote him?
Ajayi represents fresh legs and moves, but just like Parker, make him earn his playing time. Also, I wouldn't be so quick to jettison Williams just because of one fumble. He also had a play where he made Houston look silly making like 5 defenders miss.
nobody was doing jack from RB position the first four games. Damien does have some skills but he's no better than a 3rd/4th string RB. He's a good pass catcher, blocks OK and has special teams value - that's good enough if Ajayi becomes 3rd string and Williams is behind Gray.
Sorry but I have to say bad idea, Williams is the 3rd down RB, he showed some good signs of life last week, Ajayi is an unknown at this point, you don't cut players that fill a role for a player that is unproven and is not even slotted to fill the role of the player your cutting. Ajayi was available to play in this game but was inactive, iow, Cambo didn't think he was ready, or that he isn't an upgrade over who we have, now when Philbin was here I wouldn't think any of it meant anything, but with Cambo in charge I believe he will play the best players, like what's supposed to actually happen, I'm so glad Philbin is fired. Williams isn't in the equation imo, this is between Gray and Ajayi, they are battling for the same spot.
You make a good point my man. Perhaps I'm underestimating his value to the team. I need to wait and see before jumping to conclusions.
I admit I'm looking at this due to my frustration with him and his mistakes. There is a part of me that wants him to play well.
Ajayi wasn't available to play in the Texans game, he was allowed to return to practice this week but because he was on the designated to return IR, he can't play until the Bills game.
I hear you 71, and I understand, but Williams is a real good physical specimen at RB, probably the best we have with his size, speed, power and quickness combo, and he's cheap. imo he has been kind of deer in the headlights when he has the ball in his hands, not really doing anything when he needs to make some type of move, being caught in indecision, but this last game that did change a bit, he was making some moves, and they were working, his cutback is real good, but the game has to slow down for him to be able to use what he has that is effective, and there were some good signs in this game. Right now he is a very good receiver out of the backfield, and good at picking up the blitzes so he's an adequate 3rd down back, but if this kid ever gets it, he could easily become our primary RB with his skill set.
There are techniques, but so much of it is dependent on the psyche of the individual because it's a mind thing, excitement affects each person differently, call it nerves or what have you, but it's the individuals ability to process information during high levels of excitement. Every great player has the ability to process info in these situations, and at the highest levels, iow, college doesn't have the pressure of the NFL, and TC doesn't have as much pressure as preseason, and PS doesn't have as much as regular season, and then there's "must win games" in the RS that have more pressure than other games, then the playoffs have even more pressure until the ultimate, the SB, which has a ton of pressure. Every year you see players that fall off somewhere along the road, like P Manning, he's a killer in the regular season, but playoffs produce much different results for PM, inconsistent, he misses throws he normally doesn't, pressure obviously effects him at those higher levels. I'll give an example, I play competitive pool in a league, and there are players that you can play for fun outside the league and you think that this is a pretty good player, but when they have to play league matches, or the playoffs their game goes south, they miss easy shots, they don't see the table as well so they will take the wrong shots, even when they are very obvious, because the brain is not able to process the info they are seeing, and you can see their hands shaking, and they are surrounded by friends and people they know, and have known for years, so it has nothing to do with strange environment, it's just pressure. One of the best NFL examples is Leveon Bell, watching this guy run is special, he see's EVERTHING, and he maintains patience, there is no better RB in the league at following his blockers, and that can only be accomplished if your brain allows you to process the info you're seeing, and he does that to the extreme, he's as cool as the other side of the pillow, he's one of those special players that doesn't get effected by pressure, the kids got ice running through his veins. Pretty much everyone is effected by this at one time or another, or at certain times, sometimes all that's needed is experience, once a person is comfortable in that setting then they can operate as they normally would, for some people they just will never get past it, or past it at certain levels, so we just have to wait and see with Williams, but I saw some good signs last game, we'll see what happens in the future though.
Shh... fact's suck! Ajayi will be taking someone's job shortly. No doubt about that. Unless of course his pass pro is still a struggle.
He's not more talented than Lamar. Pure and simple, and it's not even close. BTW Lamar Miller is also cheap, but due to quite frankly obvious talent that's not gonna last like it will with Williams.
Ajayi has to be activated soon, or else put on season ending IR (which I think is unlikely). Therefore, someone needs to be cut to make room. Williams would be my choice, but I could see one of the TEs going too.
Dude, this is the NFL. Talent kinda matters, and is exactly the reason Williams will never ever ever pass Lamar as a No. 1 or "primary" back on a depth chart. That's a ridiculous notion, obviously. Watch and see how much Lamar makes on his second contract then compare it to Williams, it's not even a fair comparison due to extreme talent differentials.
You're right of course. Williams has his role and its an important one - he just hasn't shown anything at moving the rock that impresses me at all.
Depends on whether Jonas Gray and Ajayi can replace Williams well on any STs units (coverage as well as return).
ive been talking about that run, it really was an amazing run...folks wont let me forget that he fumbled the next play..if he could just get rid of this lateral tick he has and just explode north and south he would improve his chances of sustaining.. he competition will be Gray for the third..Ajayi is a baller.
