I think the best option for the Redsox is Zimmerman.. He has more stuff to work with than Cueto and Price..

I think its dangerous when pitchers start changing their mechanics as if they feel they need something else to distract the hitters they no longer can beat based simply on pitching. His Ode to Luis Tiant is concerning.

I like Zimmerman a lot but he's not David Price, who's a possible top 5 pitcher in the game. The other thing with Zimmerman is he's going to have a QO attached to him so not sure the Sox will want to give up their 1st round, 12th pick, for him. Plus Zimmerman is coming off a down year where his stuff was off.

I'm very ok with the Cubs losing the 28th pick to sign him if they can't get Price.

The craziest thing is that it seems like he can't get on the same page with Salvy Perez. Perez is one of the best catchers in the game right now and Cueto has openly complained about how he calls games. It's sort of crazy.

Above average is harsh, you're right ... I'm a bit biased because I haven't been impressed with him in what I have seen from him to close out the year. It seems like he's more interested in just making it to the offseason and getting paid than actually trying to help KC win games.

You should be. If the Red Sox had the 28th pick in the draft I wouldn't mind it either. But 12th pick is probably too much to give up for a non true ace SPer.

Salvy is the man! The guy makes the last out in the seventh game of the world series with Gordo on third, and I can't even be mad at him. We'd never be were we are without him.

Rotation for the mets has not been finalized according to a Terry Collins contrary to published reports. Says Harvey could pitch 3x. Published reports had Harvey starting G3.

Cespedes had a cortisone shot today for his left shoulder and skipped optional practice (along with half the team); tomorrow's practice is supposedly mandatory participation so it'll be interesting to see if he's good to go.

Juan Uribe's chest injury has him left off the WS roster.

Daniel Murphy has probably just homered again....good God I can't wait til Tuesday

you need to sign someone, anyone with the last name Murphy

Some believe Charles Murphy, the unpopular Cub owner in 1908, changed club fortunes when he got sore over being snubbed for a celebration dinner with songwriter George M. Cohan.
The goat from the notorious “Curse of the Billy Goat” was named Murphy.
GM Johnny Murphy presided over the Mets team that thumped the Cubs in 1969 and broadcaster Bob Murphy described it all.
The Cubbies blew the 1984 NLCS by losing three straight at Jack Murphy Stadium, the ballpark named for Bob’s brother.
    and....Daniel Murphy just torched them.

    True.

    2 fun facts...

    1. The mets are now 0-5 all time in world series game 1's (All time WS record is 2-2...won in 69 and 86 and lost in 73 and 2000)
    2. Michael Conforto became the first player ever to have an RBI in the Little League WS, College WS and and the MLB WS.

I'm also making a prediction....Wilmer Flores is going to have a few "big moments" in this series. Every time this guy faced adversity this year, he shined. In a big momemt, there is no other met I'd want at the plate. Not Wright, Cespedes, Murphy etc. He almost had one last night but he hooked a rocket foul in I believe the 13th before walking.

Many Mets fans were claiming what Cespedes did since being traded to the Mets earned him an MVP(Which is ludicrous), and now you guys are saying Flores? Come onnnnnn

Not only Cespedes but the Mets have Barry Bonds circa 2001 on the team right now in Murphy who basically carried the offense on his back all post season.

I just find it hard to believe that a guy with a .263/.295/.408/.703 slash line is the guy you want up in a big spot. Again I don't follow the Mets closely but the only big moment Flores has had that I remember is him hitting a HR the day after he nearly got traded.

But hey it's baseball and it's October. Stranger things have happened but Flores would probably be the 7th or 8th guy I'd want up in a big spot.

He has fantastic plate discipline. People immediately think of Murphy because of his low k rate but Flores was very strong there as well. He drives the ball to all fields and actually KNEW he would take criticism for his SS play coming out of spring training but did it anyway because the team asked him to. He's a high character player and he has a lot of strong intangible qualities. But he also has had a lot of clutch moments this year.

So many things wrong with this post...

    1. No one is claiming Flores to be the MVP. I simply stated an opinion that in a big spot I'd rather have Flores up than anyone. And I've provided reasoning for it in my previous post.

    2. Cespedes did put himself in the conversation for MVP. 17 homers in 50+ games. Almost an RBI per. More importantly the team went from dead last in the NL in runs prior to his acquisition at around 3 runs per game to first with around 5.5. If changing the dynamic of a lineup while boosting every quantifiable team stat does not make you an MVP candidate, then what does?

How can anyone with a sub .300 OBP have fantastic plate discipline?

As far as clinch moments you provided 4 links, two of which were about the same game. So he's had three walk off hits this year. That's fine. He's a good character guy, that's good too but that doesn't mean you want him up with the game on the line.

    Postseason:
    http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/batting/_/league/nl/sort/pitchesPerPlateAppearance/type/expanded

Regular season: http://www.sportingcharts.com/mlb/stats/player-pitches-per-plate-appearance-leaders/2015/ #70 in all of mlb and it got better as the year went on.

The problem with going off of the regular season numbers is that the lineup was dreadful until we got some guys back from injury (TDA, Wright, Murphy and Duda all missed significant chunks of time in the first half) and acquired Yoenis/Uribe/Kelly Johnson. It was so bad that the Mets were the first team ever to have a 3 and 4 hitter hitting under 200 after July 1 when they batted Darrell Cicilliani and Eric Campbell there. Neither made their postseason roster. Post trade the number for Flores were much better and much more in line with what met fans saw glimpses of but what was unsustainable without any lineup support. Also factor in that Flores was getting ridden hard in the media and sports radio for his defense when in fact A) they had no one else since Tejada had been playing like trash B) He was playing a position he felt was his 3rd best after 2b or 3b.

I'm telling ya bro...Wilmer Flores is the guy no KC pitcher wants to face in a big spot. His entire season already put him through the proverbial ringer...there's not much you can do to him that hasn't already been done.

So apparently Volquez's dad passed away shortly before the game started and he wasn't told until he came out. The team didn't find until Yost told Gordon that they had to win it for Volquez in the bottom of the 8th. Of course, we all know what Gordon did in the ninth inning.

    It was a crazy game.

What exactly is the point of showing me pitches per at bat? The fact remains that he had a sub .300 OBP for the year (.311 OBP in the 2nd half). He had 19 walks in 137 games this year. How does that translate to him having good plate discipline. The numbers tell me that he's apparently not a hacker swinging at the first 3 pitches he sees but he also must swing at bad pitches. That's not "fantastic plate discipline".

Why can't we go off of his regular season numbers? The only thing that a bad line up would really effect would be his RBI total if guys can't get on base in front of him or runs scored if guys don't drive him in. If anything having a poor line up around him would have helped his OBP because pitchers would have pitched around him to get to a weaker part of the line up. His 1st half vs. 2nd half numbers (with 130 less at bats) aren't that much different either.

I'm pretty sure if you ask a KC pitcher he wouldn't be high on the list of Met hitters they fear. I get that he's had a challenging season and he's dealt with it in a mature respectful way by being a team player etc etc but that doesn't mean he's automatically going to come up big in a big spot because of it. Talent still has to be there otherwise guys like Daniel Nava or Rudy would be in the Hall of Fame.

Been a die hard Mets and Dolphin fan since 1972... I was 6. Hard to imagine someone else who has gone through the highs and lows these two franchises have made us experience.. Wouldn't change a thing!

In 2015 in 136 plate appearances Flores' is a .286/.319/.405/.723 hitter with RISP. He's a career .266/.310/.414/.724 hitter with RISP in 244 plate appearances. Compared to his 2015 total line of .263/.295/.408/.703 and career line of .253/.287/.386/.673.

    There's really no big difference.

But I need guidance...is buying one of those Mets Emoji T-shirts "technically" buying League Championship gear?

Sect , buy one as fast as you can.! You have to have something to remind you of what a great season they are having and NO ONE saw coming... Btw.. I can't buy any of the same gear because of the same jinx feeling... Just how I am. But try to enjoy every second of this .. Great reward for sticking with your teams!

League Average (NL) is .254/.333/.395/.729 for RISP. So he was above average this year. Slightly, but above average nonetheless. He had the most plate appearances hitting 5th and 6th....In this series he will likely hit 7th or 8th throughout.

I don;t have the numbers for #7 and #8 hitters, but hard to do better than that for those two spots.

The Key is this....Wilmer is a good finesse pitch hitter, he is hard to locate the ball against. You have to overpower him. He has issues being challenged with speed up and in, so Cueto is a problem tonight. But Ventura and Young thereafter? You might hear from him then.

I don't care, I'm buying one. Normally I'd agree with you on buying LCS merchandise but it's been a decade since any of my pro teams made a conference finals or a finals so screw it, I'm gonna enjoy it.

And you guys can use all the data you want on this one...I'm ignoring it all...Wilmer will have his moment if the time comes.

Flores vs. power pitchers this year in 116 plate appearances .263/.304/.299/.603. This year vs. finesse pitchers in 222 plate appeaances he was .250/.279/.410/.690. Looks like he sacrificed his "plate discipline" for more power against finesse pitchers.

You do realize that pitches seen per AB is a better measure of plate discipline then simply OBP. You can have great plate displine and have an average OBP. They don't go hand in hand necessarily. Plus you just dismissed every legitimate fact I gave you based on OBP. You said you didn't watch a lot of met games....it shows.

Plate discipline and OBP go hand in hand. To me if someone has great plate discipline it means he lays off pitches he can't hit, doesn't chase bad pitches/balls, works the count, makes contact and takes walks. And let's not pretend that Flores even has an average OBP. I'm sorry but having a sub 300 OBP is terrible. The only legitimate fact you gave me is Flores was 70th in pitches seen this year (I can't/won't put much stock into 9 playoff games)that's great and all but he's still failing to reach base/making outs over 70% of the time he bats which isn't good.

Yes I stated multiple times I haven't watched a ton of Met games this year outside of playoff games, but I don't think the majority of Met fans would hand pick Flores as the one they want up with the game on the line for the reasons you previously listed.

EDIT: for whatever it's worth Fangraphs lists Flores' plate discipline at or pretty close to league average except for contact rate which is higher than average.

The damn Royals look very good thus far. They rarely make defensive mistakes, yet have made a few in the first 2 games, but the Mets haven't been able to capitalize on them. They Royals don't strike out, and it seems like they battle every damn at bat. The Mets look outmatched, but I hope they turn it around at home. Wright, Murph, Cespedes... where are you guys?

We win the next two, we win the series.
