Stephen Ross addresses Dolphins coaching change; Dan Campbell, Mike Tannenbaum discuss Dolphins' coaching change; How it came down this morning | Sports Buzz (via http://ble.ac/teamstream-) http://teamstre.am/1Lccclk Consider this a breakdown of the entire press conference
Why do I feel this is it? Why isn't Coyle out the freaking door as well. Just clean the freaking house NOW! I get the feeling he's going to be staying.
I'm not going to be surprised if Campbell decides to keep Coyle on his staff. Lets think about it for a second. Campbell is going to want to perform well for a chance at keeping this new JOB of his. So, what's in his best interest. Working with an experienced DC in Coyle? Or firing him, and replacing him with another defensive assistant, with no real experience in being a DC? I'd bet he sits down with Coyle today, and says ok, look, this is what I want from you. Are you going to do that? If Coyle obliges, he stays. If he doesn't, then Dan has to make that tough decision on firing him. I'd just say, keep it in mind though. This is Campbell's shot at being a head coach. He said it himself today, yes, it's interim head coach now, but I want to win games, I want to be here next year (or something to that effect). So again, think about it who is Dan going to replace him with? Duffner? Is that really going to help? I'd say the chances are less than that of Coyle helping win games. Is he going to go get Jim Schwartz? He can try, but why would an accomplished guy like Jim Schwartz, (who's still getting paid probably by the Lions and Bills to sit at home) want to come in and work for an unknown in Dan Campbell. He likely wont. I'd love Coyle gone too, I'm just saying, be prepared he may not be, because it doesn't make much sense for your TE coach, who's now your head coach, who self admitted today his nose has only been in offense, and that he'd have to look at the defense, want to put himself in that position? I mean, he is afterall coaching for his own future as well.
True, but he's probably going to get that again somewhere without coming here. I think if we really wanted the heads start on that, we should have just made him the interim and DC all in one shot.
Schwartz is employed by the NFL as an advisor already. That said, Dan needs time to determine whether he can work with Coyles or can him as well as needing time to determine what his options are. If he does decide to fire Coyles, and here's hoping, it'll take some time to hire a guy and get his contract in place. Give it another 8 to 24 hours...
If Campbell decides to keep Coyle I won't love it. but I'll assume and hope he sits down and talks to him.
Also, its one thing to fire your head coach, but it's another thing to fire everyone. Campbell will most likely sit down and talk to and evaluate both Coyle and Lazor but at the end of the day firing both co-ordinators probably wont put Campbell in the best situation to succeed short term. I think if he does a good job the rest of the way and get the interm label removed, he will look to hire his own guys. Just not so easy to do 4 games into the season.
I think if we stick with Coyle the season is over, I'm sorry but I would have rather kept Philbin and gotten rid of Coyle.
It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. I believe he will tell Coyle he wants an aggressive defense that does not yield one inch without challenging. We will not bend but not break. Can you do that? I think he tells Lazor to attack, attack, attack. Further, he say if we do not run the ball 25 times in a game. You have failed. These are my expectations.
Very logical. I don't recall interims really cleaning house - they need something to work with. It's already over. This is exactly what I do NOT want. Good DC, terrible terrible terrible HC. I want no part of him even having a chance, let alone the inside track. I will suffer a bad season.
Why does no one ever bring up Zach Thomas' name when talking DC? He's the 4-3 grandmaster...If only to be in Coyle's ear and to help players master studying game film. If Marino can mentor, so can Zach.
Whether or not he fires Coyle, the important thing is that he keeps the Coordinators on a short leash and make sure they're doing what he wants to be done. From his conference Campbell seems to want things done his way, so either they will comply or get to stepping. This is an amazing opportunity for Campbell, I don't see him working with anybody he's completely uncomfortable with.
