The problem isn't with the 50-yd passes. That's not ever going to be Tannehill's MO. One, he's never had a good enough running game to use play action effectively. Two, he's never had the kind of O-line that can give him 3-4 seconds in the pocket. Three, he's never shown himself to be able to predict exactly where his guys are going to be and to hit them in stride.

The O-line isn't going to magically fix itself by next week nor is Tannehill magically going to become an accurate down the field passer on the deepest routes. For God's sake, we see rookie QBs come into the league and look better throwing the ball downfield.

The bigger problem is that Tannehill takes to long to get rid of the ball on throws 15-25 yards. He's slow and he's always had to fight that. He still regresses and lacks trust in his WRs. He needs to watch some tape of Peyton Manning. I've seen plenty of situations where Peyton didn't have incredible time in the pocket and he eventually wound up on his back but he's still able to make use of the speed of Sanders and Thomas on the outside despite pressure in his face and a lack of time in the pocket. It's called being great and Tannehill really isn't it if I'm honest.

Some of that is surely that those guys fight for the ball but maybe if this team would start taking more down-the-field shots, we'd see some attitude emerge. There isn't a WR in the league that wants to catch screens and quick slants all day and play RB. That's not what they do. They want to run downfield and play fast.

I'm sorry but if you're a WR, Miami just doesn't look very appealing. There is ample talent between the WRs and the QB on this roster but we just don't see the throws being attempted enough in games. We'll see it for a drive here or there where the team elects to be more aggressive--and those are nearly always the drives we point to because they result in points--but then it's back to the dink and dunk garbage that doesn't go anywhere and which I suspect probably disappoints the players.

That eventually leads people to complain that defenses are dictating to Miami's offense what's going to happen instead of the other way around. It's true. Miami just doesn't even try in most cases and it's sad.

Meaningless stats? You mean the actual % of passes over 20 yards he completes compared to the rest of the league?

The answer for defenses like the Bills and Jets is a solid ground game. Throwing 80% of the time plays right into their hands. Blame Tannehill if you'd like but that's basically criticizing him for not being a Tom Brady HOF type.

Aaron Rodgers just overthrew a wide open Richard Rogers.

It happens. It's part of football. The best QBs are going to only hit about 60% of their passes.

So smart fans understand this and get over it.

Brady and the Patriots beat the Bills putting up 40 points throwing 59 passes equaling 83% of the time.

Yeah, but Brady has a better line, and had receivers catching balls.

Brady has 5+ seconds on every throw. The reason he's so accurate is because his line actually blocks and it's nearly impossible to stay on a WR for that long.

Just a suggestion, do basic fact checking or will come across looking like a fool...25 QBs completed over 60% of their passes last year and 25 QBs are completing over 60% of their passes heading into today. The best QBs tend to be over 65% while throwing further down the field.

No one said any QBs are perfect. The difference between the best QBs and Tannehill is the best QBs are going to have a body of work after the game where someone would say, "Damn that was a great play and throw." With Tannehill there may be a play or two, but not a body of work.

Studying stats without watching and comprehending the actual game. You guys sound just like the Henne nutswingers a few years ago. RT just doesn't pass the eye test regardless of what his OL is doing.

Tell that to the Patriots who threw it nearly 60 times and blew out the Bills. Its the QB. You need a decent QB to win in this league. And coaching staff schemes are not so great.

He's not an NFL QB that will win consistently unless he has a massive amount of talent around him, and he doesn't.

When has a QB won consistently without a massive amount of talent around them? And what do you mean by "wins"? Regular season? Championships?

At this point I would be happy to just see him LEAD a team (offense) to some important wins. He is not a leader IMO and it shows.

He is average. I don't think he has the instincts of a natural QB. Every game he gets the ball knocked out of his hands and fumbles.

I think he's the type of guy that is a standup guy, he's stubborn on the subjet because it is very diffficult to seperate weaknneses and variables that cloud the evaluation..

my stance is i'm trying to take into account all those nagative variables and still evauate what the qb would look like with those variables fixed..i still see weaknesses that will be hard to overcome to win championships, and that is what were talking about, i'm not saying hes not decent or average, im saying is the game good enough to mask some deficiences?, at this point no it isnt because hes just a very strict pocket passer..

could we win ten games with him if we revamped the line and added a bell cow running back, I think so, but at some point were gonna need the qb to make plays under pressure.

I would say "more than average", but that's just eyeballing. I would suspect the numbers would support my gut feeling.

The unfortunate thing is that he has the height. From my understanding, on the other side, the O-line should help in those situations. Still, it seems as though he gets many batted down (compared to what I see when I watch other games).

** I was thinking passes batted down. Not deflections. I'm so out of it that I cannot even read correctly. Damn this team for ruining my day. **

I've seen some meaningless stats before, but this one takes the cake. A QB could throw 3 yard passes all game long and end up with 100% Air Yards. If anything, a high air yard percentage tells me that either the receivers are bad or the qb is incapable of hitting a WR in stride. Or a game plan that involves nothing but high percentage short passing plays.

Since I joined there have been 1-2 threads per week which are generally in regard to the same topics we see in the public forum. I'm sure at some point there was more to discuss and/or report, but for the most part, it's the same discussions but with fewer posters and a higher quality of discussion. For clarity's sake though, it's MUCH more valuable in terms of people contributing real information. Instead of a b!tch-fest about Philbin, it's maybe people discussing real candidates and their resumes. That's a much more interesting (or at least informative) discussion.

Recall that we complained a lot over the first 1-2 seasons that his drop-backs were ridiculously short. He wasn't putting much of any distance between him and the O-line. That was one of several weird traits he had. He just doesn't look all that equipped to be a QB in certain regards, then again his numbers last year were more than respectable.

Personally, I think he's done developing and that last year is about as good as he'll get. I think we would've seem more heroic plays by now or at least a few games where we he just caught fire. And by 'catch fire' I don't mean complete 15 in a row with a bunch of short dump-offs mixed in. I'm talking about carving up a defense. He's really never done that.
