Rocky Raccoon has a point though.. I've been frustrated by Sturgis too, but you can't really say he lost us a game last year. We actually had a better record when Sturgis missed a kick (4-3) than when he was perfect (4-5) in 2014. Add 2013 in and overall you have 7-7 when he misses at least one FG, and 9-9 when he doesn't. Having said that, there were games in 2013 where you could say he helped lose us games. The Buffalo game we would have won had we not had a missed FG (assuming nothing else changed), and the Baltimore game we would have tied and pushed into OT with a FG, though both were 50+ yard attempts.
Sturgis is a sub 80% Field Goal Kicker and doesn't have a strong leg for kickoffs. Other than that he's great. Seriously that is not good enough. He converted, I think when I looked it up, like 78% of his kicks last year and 76% the year before. Only 4 kickers had a worse percentage last year. That is just not good enough. As far as the money goes, it is almost negligible, 50K is what was reported the other day. Franks has a stronger leg and really can't be any worse than Sturgis as far as percentage goes. I for one expect that he will ultimately be far better when all is said and done.
It's about time they cut Sturgis, he should have been cut following last season, he can't be trusted.
I mean, how does a kicker injure his leg playing kickball? I mean really! He's the only one out there doing anything remotely like his actual job! Ya know, kicking a ball!
Congrats to Andrew Franks, you have lots of potential. I think Caleb did the best he could while in Miami, I wish him well in his future endeavors.
When I saw in that video that Franks is a gym rat who takes his conditioning seriously I was impressed. Sturgis looks like a golfer in shoulder pads. No offense to golfers out there.
I hope that Sturgis can catch on somewhere. I don't wish him any ill will here. Maybe a year off where he can get himself completely healthy would be a good thing for him. On the flip side, it was time to move on. I am happy they made the switch.
