Dolphins defensive tackle Jordan Phillips, who won’t necessarily need to play quite as much with the signing of C.J. Mosley, “can be a better NFL player” than college player. That’s the prediction of Mike Stoops, his defensive coordinator at Oklahoma.

Stoops said teams asked him about the criticism that Phillips would go stretches during games without making an impact. “Jordan would be the first to say he probably could have made more plays and needs to make more plays,” Stoops said.

“Getting his body into shape; that's the biggest obstacle for him to overcome. Coming off the back injury last year, we were sensitive to re-injuring it and over-using him.”

Stoops told me he’s bullish on Phillips’ NFL potential because “you don't see guys that can do what Jordan can do athletically [at 325 pounds]. He can be an every down player.”

Stoops said Phillips is very good against the run and “for a guy that big, his pass-rushing skills can develop. He is just scratching the surface. He’s a great kid.”

I don't think the question marks with Phillips have anything to do with his athletic ability. My question with him is what happens when he has to struggle to succeed. And that test will come in the NFL. If he rises up to the challenge, then this was a great draft pick. If not, then the 2nd wasn't worth it and we can say Tannenbaum was wrong and Hickey was right (Tannenbaum over-ruled Hickey on this).

I'm excited about him. He is really naturally strong. If he watches those around him, Wake, Suh, even Vernon and takes to heart what it takes to be a real pro then he will be really good.

Apparently he wanted a RB but who I don't know. This is the article I got that info from:
    http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...hins-jordan-phillips-0511-20150510-story.html

"The source said general manager Dennis Hickey had his sights set on selecting a tailback in the second round and was scared off by Phillips' work ethic. After a pretty contentious debate between the GM and his boss, Tannenbaum got his way, and Phillips was selected, even though Hickey has final say on the Dolphins' personnel."

Yeah I saw that link but I'm not going to subscribe to read it. And even if Phillips doesn't turn out great I love the Ajayi pick in the 5th. I think this was a good overrule by Tanneballs.

Phillips is going to be an elite DT in a few years. Miami was by far the best place he could have ended up.

I interpret what has been said about him to mean that he isn't ferocious, and may lack in some other intangibles.

Being around the most ferocious DT in the NFL will help a ton, as will being around the hardest working and most disciplined guy in the world in Cameron Wake.

Expectations for this year should be kept very very low. This kid could be another Soliai. It's going to take a few years but he be will worth it in the long run.

Hes a planet theory type player, he can do what he wants, but, its all about his will to be great, if its strong he will be great because jesus does he have talent..

It didn't look to me that they did much with him from a coaching standpoint except tell him to push the center back into the pocket..

I like when he stands up from the nose and rushes, he's 6'6, strong and gets push, good luck to qb's trying to throw over him..also this dude can run like really good and does have lateral quickness, but its the dion jordan thing, does he have the will and heart to use elite athleticism and become a great football player..

Hes a smart dude, very articulate, and check this out, top 5 recruit at his position in the country coming out of high school, guess who was #1?....

    Anthony Johnson...

damn if these two cats get their sh&^ together, and find that drive, and get inspired, we could be super loaded.

Really does seem that way...as long as he's got the hunger for stardom and pride to achieve, I don't think anything else could hold him back from reading all we've seen.

he has a play on film where he scoops up a sack fumble on the run and houses it.....from 70 freakin yards....I mean when he's in full stride I've never seen a man that size run ike that..but if he doesn't bleed to wanna get better and be an all pro, then it all don't mean sh**....but damn man lol, that dude can run, theres a gif out there with the play but i don't know how to do that stuff.

I think we keep 4 tackles right?, that would mean anthony johnson's dolphin lifeline is in big time jeopardy...#1 dam recruit coming out of high school...might have to keep 5 if he flashes that much.

If Coyle can't make this a top 5 defense, he's an idiot.

Could have been, but I actually heard that it was Duke Johnson but I cannot remember where I either read or heard it.

Jordan Phillips is one of the few athletes that really blew me away at times in his tape in his blend of pure athleticism and size.

He's faster than Dion Jordan; just compare their respective fumble recovery and run towards the end zone.

He is criticized for taking plays off. There's a notion of laziness that gets thrown around when you hear that. However, he's not lazy, he has the work either. He's just mild mannered.

I don't know what's worse tho: a lack of discipline or lack of fire.

I have faith in him, and mostly agree with everything said, especially how it will take a few years to really see him shine.

Just an fyi Cash, most newspapers allow you to read at least 10 stories per month without paying...I am pretty sure that all 3 of the papers allow this..the Palm Beach Post, the Miami Herald, and the Sun Sentinel....I hope this helps. Also, I really like Phillips and and hoping that he learns the playbook Quickly, as well as how to train to be the best one can...am looking forward to seeing him and Suh side by side and also him and Anthony Johnson.

There's an easier way.. just google the title. If you click on the link through a google search it's usually free (there are exceptions here and you have to use other methods in those cases). That's why many newspapers use different titles in the actual story than on their website.

So.. try googling: "Jordan Phillips' boom or bust potential will define the Dolphins' 2015 draft"

and click on the link. I just tested that out with a Chrome browser where I got a paywall if you just click on the URL, but not if you google it, so it should work. Also, in general, going "incognito" usually gets around those "10 free stories per month" thing (without googling the title). On Chrome (and you should be using Chrome or Firefox anyway..), go to the upper right hand icon (3 horizontal bars) and select "new incognito window". NY Times for example has a limit on free articles per month but with incognito mode you can see as many as you want. Some sites get around this too, but that's another story.. anyway, just google the title of the article. That usually works.

I thought with the DT depth, Anthony Johnson might slim down to compete at DE as Coyle had used Odrick. Instead, he may have bulked up to 317. http://www.nfl.com/teams/roster?team=MIA

If that's his playing weight and the bulk does not impact his quickness, Anthony Johnson may look like a different player during preseason.
