You're just a breath of fresh air these days, Roy.

I think, to be honest, that all these comparisons to other QBs are somewhat pointless. I've been drawn into my fair share, but complaining that our guy isn't as good as some other guy, has no bearing on anything. The fact is, Tannehill is our QB, and he's here for awhile now. I really could care less if he's better than Wilson, or Newton, or whoever.

No matter what measure you use (besides his height) Wilson grades out as elite statistically. Tannehill and Newton do not. Whats ridiculous is people grasping at excuses for why he can't possibly be elite. "The elite stats are just a function of the team around him." That might be true but its also extremely unlikely. And consider this: Wilson has the highest single season college passer rating of all time. So he has the record for the highest passer rating in college, he's second all time in the NFL, and he's the only QB in the history of the NFL to post a rating of 100+ in his first two seasons. I don't watch college football so I'm assuming he must have had the greatest team ever assembled there as well?

He's also second all time in ANY/A over the first 3 seasons (though Rodgers would have came in second if he didn't ride pine at the beginning of his career). Statistically Wilson is consistently ranked amongst the elites, If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck...

And I just realized something, Wilson's twitter handle: DangeRussWilson

If that doesn't end the debate I don't know what will...

He definitely has an elite Twitter name ;)

I have Wilson in the large group of 2nd tier QBs with guys like Romo, Ben, Rivers, Flacco, Ryan, Newton, Tannehill, Stafford etc. I'm basing it on what I see when I watch them play not on stats.

Rodgers is in a class by himself, Brady and Luck are right behind him. I don't consider any other QBs elite right now.

That's definitely too large of a group. The fact you have Ben, Wilson and Romo in the group with Flacco, Newton and Tannehill and Stafford means you need to cut that into at least two, if not three groups :D

man its getting kinda fun watching this guy speak, articulate his opinions on the scheme and his payers, watching him roam the field communicating, his body language, I'm looking for any signs that scream to me this is a potential good head coach with all the characteristics that a good one needs...im seeing a few signs but not ready to go full metal jacket on a prediction, but there are some encouraging things...we've only had him one year..

He seems to have an ability to set expectations, and hold players accountable to meet them, and they seem to want to reach those expectation so they don't let him down.

    Panthers won 20-16 last year..

Cam Newton 19/38, 174 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 60.6 passer rating.. 7 carries for 51 yards and a TD. Carolina ran 28 times for 136 yards (4.9 ypc) and 1 TD.

Ryan Tannehill 28/42, 310 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 86.4 passer rating.. 4 carries for 36 yards. Dolphins ran 17 times for 52 yards (3.1 ypc).

also, newton went 5 and 8 last year, derek anderson won 2 games.

he was dreadful in that game last year, and if he didn't have those scrambles he might of been benched.

First off, that game happened in 2013.

Second, Cam Newton was 5-8-1 in 2014.

Third, Cam Newton doesn't play defense, nor does Ryan Tannehill, so there is approximately zero value in your head-to-head example.

Fourth, there was ZERO danger of Newton being benched in the game. I think you just made that up.

Fifth, there really isn't much difference between those performances.

Newton led his team down the field on 70 yard and 88 yard drives for touchdowns, both of which he scored himself. He also led his offense 56 yards down the field for a field goal, and twice got the ball around midfield and drove the offense far enough to kick two more field goals, one of which was blocked (only a 34 yarder too, chip shot). That was a legit 23 point outing for Newton's offense, with a blocked field goal knocking them back to 20 points. The offense only got 85 yards on 21 carries from the running backs.

Tannehill led his offense on a 77 yard touchdown drive which he scored himself with a deep ball to Wallace, but otherwise couldn't do more than field goal drives. He had a nice long 65 yard drive end with a field goal. He had a 42 yard drive end with a missed field goal but that field goal was not at all a gimme because it was from 52 yards. While Newton had the benefit of having received the ball around midfield inside Miami territory twice, Tannehill actually got the ball on the Carolina 11 yard line but couldn't get more than a FG out of it.

I give Tannehill the nod that day because he was more efficient, but neither had a strong showing. And since neither plays defense, the value of the "head to head" showing is virtually nil.

310 yards is quite a disparity to what Cam threw for, also considering they threw almost equal amounts. That was the game where Wallace dropped that TD at the end, right? Or let it go through his hands?

he got his jaw knocked out by wake early in the game, and quite frankly after that, he couldn't throw the football out of the pocket period..it was a brutal display by a qb, however, in his defense, and to reiterate my point about how important it is, if your athletic, that pulling the ball down and running on a defense is, thats how he won the game in the 2nd half, a few crucial third down conversions with his legs and crack, he broke the defenses back with that sh^%.

who cares when it happened...yes, cam was 5 and 8 last year....after that hit and subsequent really poor performance in the game, i thought something wasn't right with the dude, it was that bad, he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn..looked scared...but his legs bailed him out..

Yeah.. brings back memories.. but Wallace played well that game otherwise I think (other than the miss at the end). He caught some deep balls from Tannehill, including for a TD. That last throw to Wallace from Tannehill with seconds left though just goes to show a serious limitation of Wallace: he doesn't have great hands. The throw by Tannehill was right on the money and would've either been a TD or at the 1 yard line; not sure what our TO situation was.

You're right, but don't let our defense off the hook. That was just one more example of the kind of defensive lapse at the end of games we've grown way too accustomed to (especially against the run).

That game epitomizes why I don't like either QB. If you remember Newton took a huge shot from Wake early in the game, he was spitting blood from his mouth and I think it effected him. And on the other side it seemed like the Panthers were hell bent on stopping the run come hell or high water, Wallace was running all over the yard wide open all day. Had Tannehill been "on" that game could have been over before the half. But the Panthers gambled right that we couldn't beat them deep and we kept letting them hang around and when Newton got his legs back under him he was able to do enough to win.

To be fair though our coaches helped Newton get his feel back when we went into the prevent before the half for some stupid reason.

I'd trade Tannehill for Newton straight up, Carolina wouldn't. The guy has been to the playoffs before and has performed at high stages in college and the NFL. Meanwhile Tannehill's biggest game was some car wash sponsored bowl game against Northwestern lol

Also to be fair I bet on the Dolphins that game because I was expecting a let down from the Panthers and the Dolphins were 4 point dogs at home. Sucks because had I waited a day to bet the line moved to 4.5 and I still would have won the bet.

yeah that coyle defensive stance was flat out the wrong decision..

ya know being so bad against the run last year affected the outcome of many games..having Suh and mosley in there should really help this team win games they wouldn't have if they remained status quo..

neither performance was impressive but newton from the pocket was fat out indicting..cant trust him...they should just go full metal on line talent and build that zone read running game..and get what you can.

I am talking about the play where he was going out of bounds and Jones touched him. Newton acted like he was shot with a gun and fell down comically. Good move though, because it drew 15 yards.

Honestly, I think it was a good play by Newton. However it was a flop.

I like that Tannehill had a good rating, and threw for 310, had a perfect pass not completed at the end that would have won it...and he's referred to as not being "on." Come on, seriously?

Carolina had a superior defense as well. Tannehill was by far the superior QB in that game.

    It looks like Antonio.

Seriously...this isn't even a conversation. Cam Newton is a freakish and unique talent that defines the word "special." His elusiveness by itself offers a degree of legitimacy to an offense that has very little. Ryan Tannehill is a slightly above-average QB on a slowly improving offense on a team that doesn't really expect anything out of the QB position.

You play Pittsburgh, you game-plan for Antonio Brown. You play Cincinnati, you game-plan for AJ Green. You play Carolina, you game-plan for Cam Newton.

To compare Ryan Tannehill to that kind of player is offensive in some ways. I get that with improvement Tannehill can be a solid player but he needs to improve on a long list of things. RT needs to stop being so shy about pushing the ball downfield. He needs to be more accurate on the important intermediate throws. He needs to see the the field better. He needs to make quicker reads when scanning beyond 10 yards. He needs to sense pressure better. He needs to get used to moving outside the pocket more often. He needs to escape and create plays beyond the LoS.

It's a long list of things as to why Ryan Tannehill isn't the feature player in Miami. After 3 years it's all become obvious to everyone but the most die-hard Tannehill fans.

If there was a phrase "franchise weapon" I'd use it to describe Cam Newton and his abilities. No other QB in the game can do that kind thing as well as he--not Wilson, not Rodgers.

As of right now, you'd be lying or simply out of the loop if you said you thought Tannehill did as much for the Dolphins as Newton does for the Panthers.

Cam Newton is far more physically gifted than Ryan Tannehill. He makes plays that Tannehill will never make. This is true. But unless you're knocking Tanne for sport the story doesn't end there. There's this thing called consistency and Tannehill rains heavy artillery onto Newton's head in that respect.

Give Tannehill time to throw plus an open receiver and he'll make the correct football play 80% of the time. Yeah that's a made up stat but give some leeway here guys. Give Newton time to throw and an open receiver, he'll make the play 60-65% of the time. To Cam's credit he'll turn the negative play into a positive far more than Tanne will. On the flip side he'll blow the easy throw far more than Tanne also.

Really it comes down to personal preference and supporting cast. Solid OL and WR group? Gimme Tannehill all day long. Crappy supporting cast where the QB has to create something out of nothing, gimme Newton all day. But let's not act like one guy is head and shoulders better than the other. It kinda makes me feel like you're not really paying attention. WADR of course.

It's all about personal preference Deej. I know you prefer the "play making" QB, and I don't blame you one bit. We just happen to disagree on what play making really is. For me, making the routine play counts as play making. Staring down the barrel from the pocket, taking a helmet to the chin and making a good throw is just as valuable as dodging the hit breaking he pocket and running or throwing for a similar gain.

Agree or nah I love reading your posts. You have passion and knowledge to go with it. Can't help but respect that.

You as well..I took several factors into play before I made that statement, but like you said consistency and knowing what Im gonna get won out..so in this case even the lure of the coveted playmaking trait, lost to trust.

W/E. I disagree whole-heartedly...Newton has him in elusiveness (normally a primary RB trait), running (normally a primary RB trait), bravado, overconfidence and that's about it.

For those that go in for it as a quality stat, Football Outsiders' DYAR (their primary QB measurement stat) supports RT:

Ryan Tannehill - 12th in Passing DYAR / 8th in Rushing DYAR
Cam Newton - 32nd in Passing DYAR / 2nd in Rushing DYAR

Other Panthers QB - 20th in Passing DYAR / not ranked in Rushing DYAR

    http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb

Quarterbacks are ranked according to DYAR, or Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement. This gives the value of the quarterback 's performance compared to replacement level, adjusted for situation and opponent and then translated into yardage. DYAR (and its cousin, YAR, which isn't adjusted based on opponent) is further explained here.

    http://www.footballoutsiders.com/info/methods#dyar

If Newton were half the passer he is as a runner, he wouldn't NEED to be the "feature" player...in a team sport, after all. But its all about him...

There are thousands of people who disagree just like you (and almost 100% of Dolphins fans on a Dolphins forum)...and probably none of them really watch Panthers games.

Why are people so apologetic about Tannehill? Because they watch the games and feel he can be a great player. Well, if you like Tannehill, I think you'd be pretty dang optimistic if you watched Carolina games for about a month.

Yeah, there's inconsistency but until Tannehill steps up to lead his team the way Newton does...this isn't a conversation.

And if you want to argue stats then why not mention the weapons Tannehill has and the weapons Newton doesn't? And no...Steve "only shows up 4x a year" Smith doesn't count.

It's hard to tell how much is on Cam Newton when he's really not got anything to work with. I find it funny that Dolphins fans who seem to want to pretend that Tannehill has been all by himself don't want to defend Cam in the same way. Hasn't that been the defense of Ryan Tannehill? No weapons, no good protection. Well, the truth is that Mike Wallace, Charles Clay, and Lamar Miller were pretty damn good weapons--all certainly above average players who made Tannehill's job easier. You also add Landry to that list as of last year as well as Hartline's 2 good seasons prior to that and his prominence in Sherman's offense prior to Lazor's giving up on him.

The fact of the matter is that Tannehill has been surrounded by good talent for a couple of seasons now and he's even had an offensive coordinator basically build an offense up around him to try and avoid having him make the tough throws he's not good at. At what point are we as fans going to hold Ryan accountable for being great...not good, not above average, not kind of sharp towards the end of the season...great? Teams in the modern NFL are as good as their QB so we can't defend "above-average" like it's really that impressive. That's only good enough if your defense is elite in which case you don't spend your time arguing about how great your QB is.

But people continually debate Tannehill because they aren't actually all that satisfied with what he's doing.

We wouldn't have tons and tons of Ryan Tannehill debates if every single person wasn't thinking the same thing....'boy, I hope Tannehill steps up at some point.'

That's not what I see in Carolina. Newton is running an offense in which he's the feature player and there's much more responsibility on him to be the leader, the workhorse, the gas in the engine that makes it all work. Meanwhile the team has done little to add talent around him arguably getting worse since he came aboard. Russell Wilson doesn't even have Cam's athletic talents and he was able to make it to 2 back-to-back Super Bowls playing basically a scaled-down version of the Panthers offense.

You can sit there and talk stats and believe Football Outsiders have the answer but as someone who watches Carolina games, I can tell you, Newton is facing the tougher challenge.

From my vantage point as a Dolphins fan...I don't really know what Tannehill is doing that is all that special...I like him okay...he certainly doesn't suck...but I'd like to be in a position where I don't have to hedge my statements or make big apologies for being optimistic. Right now, every single Dolphins fan has to follow "I like Tannehill..." with a list of about 5 things that he really needs to improve on before the team has a good chance in the Play-offs. At this point, he's really not doing all that much to make this a team more capable than 8-8 or 9-7.

Tannehill had a good 2014, but at what point are people going to admit that in his 3rd year--and with all those weapons on offense--he should've had a good year? 4k yards is to be expected as are 60% completions. The 27/12 ratio is great but I'd trade a few more INTs for some big plays is crucial situations in a heartbeat.

Tannehill's career high is 66% and Newton's career high is 62%. Tannehill's career high is 4,045 while Newton's in 4,051.

I don't think it's all that honest to use 80% and 60% when we can just look at the actual numbers and see that they were both pretty solid. Now, last year Newton dropped down to about 59% but he was playing quite hurt, missed time and had the worst WRs in the NFL while Tannehill had his greatest set of weapons ever and was aided by a short-throw offense that pretty much everyone now agrees is not Play-off caliber.

I don't love Cam Newton but I have as much respect for him as I do Ryan Tannehill going into 2015 knowing that (1) Newton has a running dimension that's best in the league, (2) Newton should be healthy and that (3) Carolina has added a few weapons.

Look...Cam Newton hasn't had the talent around him that Tannehill has, it's really that simple. Newton stepped into a huge college program and was an instant success for a reason. Newton won a National Championship as the star for a reason. Newton went #1 overall for a reason.

However, he went to the worst team and they have mostly stayed that same team since he came aboard. The fact they've made the Play-offs and at times been competitive offensively is really all due to him.

If Tannehill was on the Panthers, they'd be garbage. If Newton was on the Dolphins, they'd have made the Play-offs I think.

The difference is, I can say that and still happily wear my Tannehill jersey on Sundays.

He IS a hell of a player...and no, I don't care one bit...he's not a Dolphin. I'll take RT over him all day long, twice on Sunday. I'm not saying RT is elite and Newton sucks...I just think RT is slightly ahead of Newton at this point, with much more ceiling.
