I understand where you're comin from. I thought Parker looked like a stud. I kept hearing other lesser prospects rated higher for various reasons, but mostly his seperation. It can be tempting to "stick your tongue" out once in a while.
Bear in mind that I also heard that White, Lockett and Diggs looked like studs as well. I think there might have been another WR or two that also looked great in their OTAs, but I can't recall who it was.
I'm simply mentioning it's human nature. We all have our moment of weaknesses and he admitted to it. I think Lockett is gonna be a stud too.
Leaving receptions on the field? How on earth is that leaving receptions on the field. http://www.nfl.com/draft/2015/profiles/devante-parker?id=2552409
You can't just go by that statistic. There are plays where the route that he runs or the way he plays a press corner leads to a) not as many yards after the catch or b) a PBU from said corner. These are things he needs to improve if he wants to be a well-rounded receiver. None of us can really gauge how fast that happens. It could happen next season, it could happen by the end of training camp, only time will tell. I'm rooting for him.
It's still interesting to me that all these teams picking directly before us that could've used a wideout didn't take the guy, Parker wasn't good enough to convince St. Louis to pass on one of the two great RB's in this class (we should've followed suit), Minnesota could've reunited Bridgewater with his top weapon in college but they went BPA and took Waynes, Cleveland's WR situation was much worse than ours but they had Shelton rated higher, which is completely understandable, even New Orleans who lost their top pass catcher and have an aging Colston and a tiny Cooks passed on him.
I look at this kind of stuff like a game, if I talk smack about evaluating players it's all in good fun, I dig it, I like to hold people accountable to their Evals, including myself... For me it's effective in how I figure out my team, it's direction, how good we will be or how poor by knowing who's record is good..it's a game and I like to play it... I think I was dion Jordan's biggest fan so.
jftr, I soured on Kevin white ( personality related) and was locketts biggest fan, and of course really happy to select Parker at 12..
Rams took Tavon Austin in the 1st last year. Fisher is a defensive coach who just traded his QB. Of course he's going with a power rushing attack. He had success with Eddie George in TN. Minny also has a defensive HC. They have AP, drafted Cordarrelle Patterson in the 1st in 2013 and just traded for Mike Wallace. Why would they want Parker? The Saints drafted Brandin Cooks in the 1st last draft and have 14 WRs on their roster. Their defense was atrocious last season. Cleveland is Cleveland. They always manage to fook up in the draft, but then again they just signed Brian Hartline. So there's that.
lol. Let me get this straight.......... You are always on here *****ing about our team. But now you're saying we should have listened to teams that were worse than us......??!?!?!? Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
I was gonna put a remark here agreeing with you and taking a shot back at the original post, but editing this because I respect what the OP posted later in the thread.
I didn't want him predraft... but admit I'm already starting to come around on the pick. Hey he is a Dolphin now, so I'll choose to accept the positivity around him and do my best to get excited.
thats what I do no matter where I had them rated predraft, no'one is to good at this game of evaluating to not give their own true bloods a clean slate..let them at least prove you wrong with good support.
Thanks guys for the kind responses. I got caught up in it all cause I was really excited about the Parker pick. After Gurley was gone I just knew Parker was not going to make it to us. Very thankful he did. I agree that there is no room for starting threads like this. I really enjoy this forum and everyone's insight whether I agree with it or not. I was simply sticking my tounge out at anti-Parker posters and I would like to think I'm better than that. Sometimes the foot goes in the mouth though. At the end of the day we are all here for a reason our love for the Dolphins and I respect that.
I wanted us to draft Todd Gurley more than any pick in recent memory since Aaron Rodgers. And I'm firmly convinced that's why we didn't get him. (25 years and counting the Dolphins NEVER draft the player I want) LOL I wanted Danny Shelton after that. (see above sentence) But, I'm happy with the news coming out about DeVante Parker now. I didn't like the pick at first, but I'm definitely warming up to it now.
Yeah, I remember a lot of people here - myself included - weren't as high on Parker as many other 1st round offensive skill players in the past (CJ Spiller, Brandin Cooks, Todd Gurley, adding to your list). He's grown on me as of late, and I think will become a very good player for us down the road.
I remain a little cautious about DeVante Parker, as I'd been prior to the draft, but it's hard to dislike the pick because they stayed at 12 to get him and because bottom line he catches everything, can leap tall buildings in a single bound, has good body control and broke a sh-t ton of tackles in 2014. There were other guys I liked but you have to reach pretty hard to decide this guy is going to be bad at his job.
If I remember correctly, your primary concern was his inability to get free. The big question of course is to what degree his ability to out-leap and catch balls compensates for that. I don't think we will know the answer to that until we see him against NFL DB's, but so far the pick looks great.
In this system I'm not positive he'll be asked to break free of tight man coverage a ton so he could end up a good system fit. You could argue Perriman or Agholor were better pure system fits because of speed, though.
If there's going to be any complaint about Devante Parker this season, it's likely to be that Joe Philbin does not play him enough.
Yeah, you were pointing out Agholor early on. Never got on the Perriman bandwagon myself though because he has a reputation for drops (he himself says that's due to lack of concentration). Not sure if that's what we need.
I wasn't a huge fan of the Parker pick as I preferred Gordon, but I would never argue that he wouldn't probably be at least good. I just questioned whether he was likely to be great. So, I had him a tier below White and Cooper, but after Strong had that late reported injury, Parker would have been at or near the top of that tier for me. (I was never as high as others on Perriman and Algholor). I thought it was a stronger WR draft class than it was a RB draft class. And I saw those as two places I wanted upgrades/additions. I had two elite WRs and two elite RBs and only one of those four was available at 14. I would have snagged the last elite prospect (on my board) and gone with a later WR. But I do like Ajayi and maybe Parker proves me wrong and ends up elite rather than just good. Either way I can't say our choices were poor, just that they weren't plan A for me.
I don't want to give the impression I'm a Perriman guy. I just mean that the routes I saw Hartline running a ton, Perriman might be more compelling on them, might be a better pure system fit. You're right about the hands being pretty inconsistent. He can show you hands that are like, oh wow this guy can catch an NFL football. Then you'll be like...why didn't you catch that? He doesn't finish plays as well as he could.
I stopped investing emotion into who I want the team to pick. Wanted Rodgers too, but not that much. Wanted Marcus McNeil when we went Jason Allen. McNeil didn't go until 50 and retired after 6 seasons. Most recently thought we were getting Jerry Hughes and was clapping what I heard Jeerrrrrrrred Odrick. No more. I just wait and see who we pick now.
Ajayi is a good point to bring up. I think Gordon is special and am wary of Ajayi's longevity which I think SHOULD be Gordon's strong suit, but if you would have told me that we could pick up Gordon in R1 or we could go with Parker in R1 then pick up Ajayi in like R5...I'd be pretty tempted, even not being the biggest Parker fan out there. Have to admit though Stills, Landry and Parker make for a really diverse set of skills.
I wanted Aaron Rodgers more than Todd Gurley. I even started a thread about it. But I think it was on the "Other" site saying, "Aaron Rodgers is the next Joe Montana with a Stronger Arm" I was laughed at then. I watched a lot of film on him prior to the draft and had a man crush. Also, he was the ONLY QB to beat USC that year, and I watched that game. He was amazing. Oh well, we cleaned up that spilled milk a long time ago.
I thought Rodgers was the best prospect in that draft. I thought if you were speaking purely position relative, Braylon Edwards was the best pure player in that draft. But once you account for the importance of the QB position it's pretty clear Rodgers should've been the first pick. Well, not to the 49ers obviously. I did like the idea of hauling in a boat load of picks for Nick Saban to use to really lay the foundation of the team the way he wanted it, so if we had been offered like an RG3 ransom to go up to #2 overall then I'd have probably taken that instead of taking Rodgers. But otherwise I had a pretty serious mancrush on him and I'd have taken him at #2 overall, provided nobody blew us out of the water with a trade-up offer.
That was so weird how they flip-flopped right before the draft and changed their mind from Aaron Rodgers to Alex Smith. Rodgers was the consensus #1 almost all the way up to it. IIRC, GM's were getting cold feet about QB's coming from Jeff Tedford's system. I was doing backflips (not really...LOL) when The 49ers passed on him and was SURE he'd be our pick. Then the same old song comes on. EDIT: THIS ONE...
I hate Devante Parker. There...now finally 1 person said it so the title of the thread at least makes sense. Last time I checked, everyone loves Devante Parker!
