Now before I get ripped here is what I see

He is a starting center since day 1 which is very good
Our O-line is not good so is starting on it a big deal

I find it easier seeing what the guard and tackles do and find it harder evaluating a center

What does Satele do good that most centers don't and what does he need to improve on

Completely agree #1. I couldn't be more happy with Satele. In the beginning of the season I was a little worried about his snaps - they were too high. He's a star in the making IMO.

For most of the year, we were averaging 5 YPC and Satale was a huge part of why. The biggest problem with our OL is we had bad play at LG and RT.

    The kid is stud!

Some of the things I have been impressed with him are:

    - Has had no trouble making all of the line calls. Having Rex next to him helped no doubt, but even Rex has said that the kid didnt have much trouble from day one, although he was there to help Satele when needed.

    - Fires out of his stance very quick. QB sneaks and dives up the middle have been very effective, and a lot of it has to do with this kid.

    - Once he fires out, he seals his blocks very well. Gets into great position and uses good technique when sealing on run plays.

One of the things he needs to work on is his strength. He fires out of his stance very quick, and usually gets into position in the run game. However, if he is going against another quick DT/NT, that beats him to his position, he sometimes has trouble clearing him out. But strength will come with another year of NFL conditioning and weight lifting...

EDIT: And yes, as Tacos said below me, his screen blocking has been GREAT. (I dont know how I forgot that... lol). It might be his best aspect. The kid is great in space, and is very nimble for a lineman, which allows him to pick up LBs and DBs on screen passes, and not allow the defenders to simply run around him.

On every Ronnie screen, Satele was clearing the way ahead of him. The kid goes on a search and destroy mission...

He's really quick, on screens he is the one that gets down field to block. Whatch this, it is Ronnie highlights but pay attention to how many runs go through him, and how many times he pulls. The last play in the highlight clip shows his ability to get out on a screen. We haven't had a center this quick in a long time. Remeber he is a rookie doing this, and didn't run block much in college. He is just going to get better.

go look at chambers' DVOA. he has been the worst in the league for a number of years.

and satele is a bit undersized for his position.

explain how satele is merely serviceable and keep in mind that he is a rookie.

6'3 300lbs is NOT undersized AT ALL. How big do you want your Center to be?!? Centers normally dont get much bigger than 300lbs, because you need them to be quick...

Samson Satele could run through a brick wall....he would leave a short hole in the wall but even still.....

Quick quick quick, for a 300 pound man, he really covers the whole field, in that he reminds me of Kevin Mawae 7 years ago, just a mobile aggressive Center who could play Guard just as easily as Center....

I would trade Welker for Satele all day long.

    because he is undersized.

he fits the system that cameron likes to run

but if you put him in a power-running system, he is average

im not saying that he isn't good. he has been a bright spot this year.

    Satele, Samson C 6'3" 300
And here are the probowlers and the starting centers from some of the better rushing teams.

The Pats: Koppen, Dan 6'2 296
The Cowboys: (probowl) Gurode, Andre 6'4" 316
The Colts: (probowl) Saturday, Jeff 6'2" 295
The Broncos: Myers, Chris 6'4" 295
The Chargers: Hardwick, Nick 6'4" 295
The Jags: Meester, Brad 6'3" 295
The Vikings: Birk, Matt 6'4" 309
The Steelers Mahan, Sean 6'3" 301

I think his size is fine.

Ya, 6'3 300lbs is pretty prototypical for a Center... especially for a rookie, who will probably add a few more pounds as he develops...

Don't forget that he was the only Phins player to approach Travis Johnson after Trent Green went down and Travis was talking smack, to defend his QB...

He probably wildly misinterpreted some posts about how Cameron doesn't mind slightly smaller linemen because he wants burst and explosiveness off the line.

That doesn't mean Satele is undersized. It just means he's a beast.

His critics believe he can't play a season without missing games. Brown is a beast and hopefully his surgery went well so he could be again

Small as compared to who? If you check the other centers in our division including New England you will see they are comparetively about the same. As a matter of fact the Pats centers are both smaller than Satele. The Colts only have one center on their roster and he is also smaller than Satele.

Sorry Omar, I should have read the rest of the posts before I responded to your first one.
I do like Satele and IMO he could be the next All-Pro Miami center. Its been a long time since Jim Langer and Dwight Stevenson and not much since those two.

yea, just cruddy and blocknot, "I" think our center is working out just fine.. MUCH better than I had hope for beggining of the season. All the "can't" run block stuff had me worried.. but alas, the Samoan lad has a bad attitude towards wrong colored jersey's and has come along well. He has played the best the nfl has to offer and not been dominated.. as a rookie.. future is bright !

He had 11 carries for 26 yards.

This is about the time the OL fell apart and Chatman was playing thru injury. He shouldn't even have been active, and missed the next two games. Guy is still limited.

Why don't you bring up the 73 yards (10.4 ypc) vs NE, the 79 yards (4.9 ypc) vs the Giants or the 124 (4.6 ypc) against Buffalo.

Chatman's not Brown, but don't sell him short. The guy can play.

Plenty of good summations in this thread. I focus on center play and Satele is our best in a long, long time. He's quick and athletic with a motor. I love how he turns his man in the proper direction and finishes the play. Very good feet. Some minor strength issues but I'm not worried about that from a rookie.

But I did cringe when several posters mentioned screens. Screens are worthless. The second most overrated play in football, behind the give-up fade pass. In fact, they are very similar to fades in that somehow the failed screen passes -- and they happen by the truck load -- are ignored, while the successful ones somehow become folklore. I could give plenty of stats. Screen passes do not work in relation to the percentage of time they are called. Teams that succeed with screens could succeed with anything. That basically leads lesser teams to try it and the screens are stuffed.

In particular, 3rd down screen passes are the height of ignorance. I wanted to scream on Sunday when we tried one against NE. A good defense is not going to let you run a cutesy 3rd down finesse play behind the line of scrimmage and rumble for a vital 1st down. Naturally our 3rd down screen was destroyed.

It shouted to me that Cameron has no clue regarding tendencies when he runs a 3rd down screen pass. I worked for years in a Las Vegas sports stats office and the room literally erupted in demeaning laughter whenever someone tried a 3rd down screen pass in a high profile game. We had the percentages smack in front of us, based on years of charting. 3rd down screen passes don't work in college or pro.

Satale is playing exceptionally well for a rookie. He has a bright future.
