Crabtree of last season isn't much better than Hartline and has been a problem child.

Kaep's accuracy issues were due to the declining health of Crabtree and problems with Davis.

When I look at the numbers, I do think that the production from a young, improving and yet-to-mature Kenny Stills can replace Wallace's numbers from 2014 because Wallace's 1300-yd potential wasn't reached with Tannehill in Lazor's offense and while Stills' numbers will dip as well they will be very comparable. While Wallace's 10 TDs matched a career high, he got those largely thanks to early season targets while Clay was not on the field and his 862 yards was depressing. During a normal year I think he would produce about 6-8 TDs in Lazors offense and I see Stills' getting 5-6 so I would put those guys on similar levels while in Miami with Wallace being a slightly more proven commodity in the league.

So while Wallace is a more valuable commodity at this point, they are still very, very similar players to us at the end of the day. But let's look at the numbers...

Last year Stills had 63 catches on 84 targets. He totaled 962 yards and 3 TDs. He averaged 11.1 yards per target. He caught 10 balls of 20+ yards and 6 of 40+ yards.
By comparison, Wallace had 67 catches on 115 targets. He totaled 862 yards and the 10 TDs. He averaged 7.5 yards per target. He caught 10 balls of 20+ or more yards and only 2 of 40+ yards.

According to that, it would seem that we targeted Mike Wallace more on shorter routes and sometimes treated him like a possession WR (Wallace had 115 targets, Stills had 84) which bolstered his overall targets and helped erase the disparity in yardage given the lack of receptions over 40-yards (Wallace had 2, Stills had 6).

Assuming that Wallace's 10 TDs was not going to repeat itself due to its being a high-water mark as well as the product of other player(s) being injured, I see Kenny Stills as an apt replacement, particularly considering his youth.

So if we we're sitting here with Wallace (862 yds), Landry (758 yds), Clay (605 yds) and Matthews...would we really feel like we had to go WR in the 1st round? I don't think so. I said before that teams who still have their top-3 WRs from the prior year, typically don't reach high in the draft to add a 4th. There's just not room for that. It would definitely be an aggressive move aimed at assembling an over-the-top WR-corp in the same way that adding a 4th 1st-round pick to our O-line seems downright careless in regards to the overall plan.

So if you see Kenny Stills as an apt replacement for Wallace and you're okay with Cameron replacing Clay...we're pretty much in the same position we were when we let go of Hartline and Gibson. Part of that hole is filled with Matthews. Do we really need to reach into the 1st round to find a guy that can get 700 yards worth of production with one of the league's better young developing passers?

But in defense of the 1st round WR, Kenny Stills in NO did have Jimmy Graham and Marques Colston, who put up a combined 150 receptions, 1800 yards and 15 TDs. Landry and Clay together only produced 140 catches, for 1350 yards and 8 TDs. That's quite a mismatch, but then again Drew Brees threw for 4950 yards so there's that.

I think what this really comes down to is how good Tannehill can do. I'm not sure we need a 1st round WR if Tannehill is putting up 4000 yards. Where is the production going to come from? We need Tannehill to be the type of guy that can throw for 4500+ yards or else it just doesn't make sense to add a WR in the 1st round. Hell, if Tannehill is only going to throw for 4000 yards every season then we might do better going after a 1st round RB!!!

Yes, a new 1st round WR will make Tannehill better but if you do spend that high a pick on a WR, you're basically saying to the world that you have confidence in Tannehill adding 500 yards of production to his 2014 total and his throwing for 5-8 more TDs next season.

If that doesn't happen, the 1st round WR is going to be a big flop.

Seems that Crabtree is nothing more than a name anymore. He hasn't looked right since he came back from his achilles injury. Perhaps he just wasn't healed up all the way last season or maybe he never will. Just don't really see the point in signing a guy that's damaged goods with an attitude problem.

Guys, you can't deny we have a gaping hole in the "controversial WR who has/had potential and deservedly/undeservedly divides the fanbase into homer/hater camps and occasionally/frequently causes drama due to on/off field attitudes/actions" role now that Ted Ginn... erm, I meant Brandon Marshall... umm, I meant Mike Wallace is gone. I mean, WHO would we all argue about?!?! We'd have to pay out the @#$ just to bring Incognito & Martin back before the season starts. Do you realize how BORING the year would be if we all agreed on our WR set? Crabtree is a value pick at this position, and should bring just the right amount of teeth gnashing & angst without too much of a cap hit.

If only Wallace had been half the player that he was in the minds of idealistic Dolfans.
