Why limit it to this offseason? I'm having a difficult time identifying another trade in recent memory that would top this from a pure value perspective. This was an absolute coup. A heist.

I love seeing some saints fan say "Well he was a 5th round pick and we gout a 3rd round pick so good trade" That logic makes no sense... Tom Brady was a 6th round pick...

    Agreed.

Cleared some cap space, hopefully for Clay, and added a solid #2 WR. Win win win.

The difference is that when Wallace runs a deep pass, he actually gets behind the secondary and is far down field.
When the other WR's on the team run down field on a deep route. Their routes would be considered mid range routes for most teams.

The fact is Tannehill is not a very effective deep ball passer at this time, no matter who the receiver is. Perhaps he can improve in this area of his game in the future, but it certainly isn't Wallace's fault that Tannehill is not effective in this part of the passing game.

It sure appears to me that Tannehill has hit Wallace on his hands on more than one occasion and the ball was dropped.

    It takes 2.

Wes Welker was picked up as a free agent by the Dolphins. When we got a 2nd and 7th round pick for him from the Patriots there were a lot of Dolphin fans who thought that was a great deal for the Dolphins.

We soon learned that it was the Patriots who ended up with the best end of that trade.

Hopefully Saint fans will also look back in a few years and wonder how their team could have traded away Stills for so little in return.

No doubt there have been a few occasions where the fault on the deep pass was Wallace's. The majority of the fault on these passes though is on Tannehill and his overall lack of ability to throw a good deep ball consistently.

I'm not saying he can't or won't improve in this part of his game. But anyone who has watched him play the past three years realizes that this is one part of his game which needs improvement. That is all I am pointing out.

Tannehill threw some really nice deep balls last season, that were not caught. Unfortunately, the narrative that he doesn't throw a good deep ball is so embedded with people, that there is literally nothing you can say to change their minds. I do think that Tannehill didn't trust Wallace, and that played into how many of his throws in his direction were thrown. Just my own opinion, though.

    This just in:

Stills also led all wide receivers in the league -- by a wide margin -- in EPA per play in 2014 and 2013.

Amazing deal for the Dolphins in this case.

Who had Drew Brees throwing passes to him in a dome for 8 games. I am not trying to bust balls, but this is Jet fans beef with Tannenbaum. He dealt away so many draft picks when he was the Jets GM.

You get a player the same age as many draft prospects this year that has two solid years of pro experience and productivity. Yeah ... trading a third is a bad idea .

There wasn't a statistical difference for Stills when in domes vs outdoors, according to the stats Tannephins references a page or two ago.

Especially considering how our recent 3rd round picks panned out: Dallas Thomas, Will Davis, Mike Egnew, Daniel Thomas was pretty much a 3rd rounder, John Jerry, etc... Olivier Vernon has been our only hit in the 3rd round and it's too early to say anything about Billy Turner (who I am actually high on).

I'm all for building through the draft, but if this front office can't hit on their picks in the middle rounds, then I'm not opposed to trading mid round picks to get young, established players. Plus this deal helped us free up some cap space.

Well, for all of the people saying he can stretch the field....so could Wallace. It does no good if the QB can't get the ball there. This is the one area RT has to get better this year. If not we'll be in the same boat next year.

watch NO vs Pitt. Deep balls all day. In the 1st quarter, he had a double move on the slot CB and had him beat for like a 60 yard TD by about 5 steps. Brees got hit and overthrew him. Had a 44 yard catch and a 69 yard TD catch as well later in the game.

Good grief, in 2013 as a rookie the passer rating throwing to Stills was 139.3!!! 46 targets, 32 receptions, 641 yards, 5 TDs, and 1int.
The 139.3 was first in the league for WRs playing at least 25% of team snaps.

    Overview

A five-star recruit out of California, Stills chose the Sooners over Florida and joined good friend Tony Jefferson in Norman. He comes from good football bloodlines, as Stills' father, Ken, was an NFL safety for six seasons and his uncle, Gary Stills, played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens.

Kenny Stills started every game as a true freshman in 2010 opposite Ryan Broyles and recorded 61 catches for 786 yards and five touchdowns, all school-records for receiving by a freshman.

He again finished second on the team in receiving behind Broyles in 2011 (11 starts), matching his 61 receptions from 2010 while totaling more yards (849) and scores (8). Stills earned Second Team All-Big 12 in 2011 despite missing two games.

With Broyles off to the NFL, the spotlight was on Stills to fill the void and step up as the Sooners' top target in 2012. He did just that with career highs in receptions (82), yards (959) and touchdowns (11).

A self-proclaimed pessimist, Stills labeled his junior season as "sub-par."

"I'm my biggest critic; I always have been," Stills said before the team's Cotton Bowl loss to Texas A&M. "I have high expectations for myself, and there's still too many times when I'm dropping easy balls, and kinda leaving my body out there. I definitely expect more from myself."

Stills was named second-team All-Big 12, and decided to declare for the NFL Draft. He entered 2012 as a borderline top 100 prospect, but showed more consistency as a junior once he was finally out of Broyles' shadow and could be a second-day pick.

"What they have to say is cool, but I can evaluate myself," Stills told the Oklahoma News when asked what role the NFL advisory committee would play in his decision to come out of school a year early. "My dad's been there. I've got a lot of people that know a lot of things."

    Analysis

Strengths: Natural athlete with excellent body control. Quicker than fast and more smooth than quick-twitch. Very good body adjustments to make grabs away from his body with soft hands and focus to extend and pluck. Good footwork in his routes and looks fluid in his breaks, helping him separate. Understands how to hide route intentions and his play reflects that of a veteran at time. Good route quickness and second gear to speed past defensive backs. A lot more physical than he looks with good toughness after the catch. Aggressively throws his body around and seems to enjoy blocking. Experience lining up both inside and outside. Always appears pumped up on the sideline and is known as one of the team leaders.

Weaknesses: Only average size and bulk and lacks imposing muscle. Sneaky fast, but not a track athlete. Bad habit of rounding off routes and needs to show same consistency for all four quarters. Needs to do a better job helping his quarterback by coming back to the ball or becoming the defensive back on off-target throws. Caught pushing off and needs to play smarter with too many frustrating mistakes, including several false start penalties on his resume. Talks too much on the field and has some maturity questions after a few off-field incidents, including a DUI arrest in 2011.

Sounds like he may have been he guy that defenses weren't focused on. If he's our primary WR you can pretty much guarantee he won't be duplicating those numbers.

Yeah, we still need a primary guy but Wallace wasn't the right guy and his contract was huge so in the long run we did ourselves a favor. Maybe we'll find that replacement in this draft, maybe not but I don't think Mike Wallace fit well in this offense so we have a chance to get better. I have a sneaking suspicion that we weren't going to get better so long as Wallace was our primary guy.

You have to somewhat pleased we at least have an opportunity here, right?

Bottom line was that we weren't going to win the Super Bowl with Tannehill throwing to Wallace. That just wasn't going to happen. Sometimes the best way forward is the take a step or two back so that other avenues of possibility can arise.

Yes, there is still work to do, but I think this Wallace trade needed to happen. Do you not agree?

Hickey is more into the hands on scouting, and I'd say his job now is still be basically the head of both sides of the scouting dept. Tbaum probably handles all the administrative stuff so that Hickey can just focus on player evaluation.
